Uncertainty quantification of satellite precipitation estimation and Monte Carlo assessment of the error propagation into hydrologic response
The aim of this paper is to foster the development of an end-to-end uncertainty analysis framework that can quantify satellite-based precipitation estimation error characteristics and to assess the influence of the error propagation into hydrological simulation. First, the error associated with the satellite-based precipitation estimates is assumed as a nonlinear function of rainfall space-time integration scale, rain intensity, and sampling frequency. Parameters of this function are determined by using high-resolution satellite-based precipitation estimates and gauge-corrected radar rainfall data over the southwestern United States. Parameter sensitivity analysis at 16 selected 5° à 5° latitude-longitude grids shows about 12-16% of variance of each parameter with respect to its mean value. Afterward, the influence of precipitation estimation error on the uncertainty of hydrological response is further examined with Monte Carlo simulation. By this approach, 100 ensemble members of precipitation data are generated, as forcing input to a conceptual rainfall-runoff hydrologic model, and the resulting uncertainty in the streamflow prediction is quantified. Case studies are demonstrated over the Leaf River basin in Mississippi. Compared with conventional procedure, i.e., precipitation estimation error as fixed ratio of rain rates, the proposed framework provides more realistic quantification of precipitation estimation error and offers improved uncertainty assessment of the error propagation into hydrologic simulation. Further study shows that the radar rainfall-generated streamflow sequences are consistently contained by the uncertainty bound of satellite rainfall generated streamflow at the 95% confidence interval. Model-Based Calibration of Filter Imperfections in the Random Demodulator for Compressive Sensing
The random demodulator is a recent compressive sensing architecture providing
efficient sub-Nyquist sampling of sparse band-limited signals. The compressive
sensing paradigm requires an accurate model of the analog front-end to enable
correct signal reconstruction in the digital domain. In practice, hardware
devices such as filters deviate from their desired design behavior due to
component variations. Existing reconstruction algorithms are sensitive to such
deviations, which fall into the more general category of measurement matrix
perturbations. This paper proposes a model-based technique that aims to
calibrate filter model mismatches to facilitate improved signal reconstruction
quality. The mismatch is considered to be an additive error in the discretized
impulse response. We identify the error by sampling a known calibrating signal,
enabling least-squares estimation of the impulse response error. The error
estimate and the known system model are used to calibrate the measurement
matrix. Numerical analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of the calibration
method even for highly deviating low-pass filter responses. The proposed method
performance is also compared to a state of the art method based on discrete

Active Sampling-based Binary Verification of Dynamical Systems
Nonlinear, adaptive, or otherwise complex control techniques are increasingly
relied upon to ensure the safety of systems operating in uncertain
environments. However, the nonlinearity of the resulting closed-loop system
complicates verification that the system does in fact satisfy those
requirements at all possible operating conditions. While analytical proof-based
techniques and finite abstractions can be used to provably verify the
closed-loop system's response at different operating conditions, they often
produce conservative approximations due to restrictive assumptions and are
difficult to construct in many applications. In contrast, popular statistical
verification techniques relax the restrictions and instead rely upon
simulations to construct statistical or probabilistic guarantees. This work
presents a data-driven statistical verification procedure that instead
constructs statistical learning models from simulated training data to separate
the set of possible perturbations into "safe" and "unsafe" subsets. Binary
evaluations of closed-loop system requirement satisfaction at various
realizations of the uncertainties are obtained through temporal logic
robustness metrics, which are then used to construct predictive models of
requirement satisfaction over the full set of possible uncertainties. As the
accuracy of these predictive statistical models is inherently coupled to the
quality of the training data, an active learning algorithm selects additional
sample points in order to maximize the expected change in the data-driven model
and thus, indirectly, minimize the prediction error. Various case studies
demonstrate the closed-loop verification procedure and highlight improvements
in prediction error over both existing analytical and statistical verification

A self-mixing laser sensor design with an extended kalman filter for optimal online structure analysis and damping evaluation
We have developed a new algorithm based on the extended Kalman filter, in order to improve the resolution of an
optical displacement sensor. This new non contact sensor which provides vibration measurement with a very good accuracy might be used for online quality control by measuring the damping of excited mechanical structure. This self-mixing sensor subject to weak feedback has been tested in comparison with a commercial vibrometer, to measure the frequency response function of a plate with a passive damping to be characterized, in order to show the efficiency of a damping treatment
Smart Embedded Passive Acoustic Devices for Real-Time Hydroacoustic Surveys
This paper describes cost-efficient, innovative and interoperable ocean passive acoustics sensors systems, developed within the European FP7 project NeXOS (Next generation Low-Cost Multifunctional Web Enabled Ocean Sensor Systems Empowering Marine, Maritime and Fisheries Management) These passive acoustic sensors consist of two low power, innovative digital hydrophone systems with embedded processing of acoustic data, A1 and A2, enabling real-time measurement of the underwater soundscape. An important part of the effort is focused on achieving greater dynamic range and effortless integration on autonomous platforms, such as gliders and profilers. A1 is a small standalone, compact, low power, low consumption digital hydrophone with embedded pre-processing of acoustic data, suitable for mobile platforms with limited autonomy and communication capability. A2 consists of four A1 digital hydrophones with Ethernet interface and one master unit for data processing, enabling real-time measurement of underwater noise and soundscape sources. In this work the real-time acoustic processing algorithms implemented for A1 and A2 are described, including computational load evaluations of the algorithms. The results obtained from the real time test done with the A2 assembly at OBSEA observatory collected during the verification phase of the project are presented.Postprint (author's final draft
Online Learning of Power Transmission Dynamics
We consider the problem of reconstructing the dynamic state matrix of
transmission power grids from time-stamped PMU measurements in the regime of
ambient fluctuations. Using a maximum likelihood based approach, we construct a
family of convex estimators that adapt to the structure of the problem
depending on the available prior information. The proposed method is fully
data-driven and does not assume any knowledge of system parameters. It can be
implemented in near real-time and requires a small amount of data. Our learning
algorithms can be used for model validation and calibration, and can also be
applied to related problems of system stability, detection of forced
oscillations, generation re-dispatch, as well as to the estimation of the
