Mobile and Accessible Learning for MOOCs
Many modern web-based systems provide a ‘responsive’ design that allows material and services to be accessed on mobile and desktop devices, with the aim of providing ubiquitous access. Besides offering access to learning materials such as podcasts and videos across multiple locations, mobile, wearable and ubiquitous technologies have some additional affordances that may enable new forms of learning on MOOCs. We can divide these into two categories: firstly, context-sensitive features including delivery of content for a specific location, enabling a seamless continuity of learning across settings, and linking people in a location with others in a virtual representation of that place; secondly social learning opportunities to connect people as they move within and across locations, to enable crowd-sourced learning. In this paper we explore these aspects of mobile and accessible learning for MOOCs, drawing on examples from MOOC courses, mobile toolkits, and crowd-sourced learning sites
Deep Character-Level Click-Through Rate Prediction for Sponsored Search
Predicting the click-through rate of an advertisement is a critical component
of online advertising platforms. In sponsored search, the click-through rate
estimates the probability that a displayed advertisement is clicked by a user
after she submits a query to the search engine. Commercial search engines
typically rely on machine learning models trained with a large number of
features to make such predictions. This is inevitably requires a lot of
engineering efforts to define, compute, and select the appropriate features. In
this paper, we propose two novel approaches (one working at character level and
the other working at word level) that use deep convolutional neural networks to
predict the click-through rate of a query-advertisement pair. Specially, the
proposed architectures only consider the textual content appearing in a
query-advertisement pair as input, and produce as output a click-through rate
prediction. By comparing the character-level model with the word-level model,
we show that language representation can be learnt from scratch at character
level when trained on enough data. Through extensive experiments using billions
of query-advertisement pairs of a popular commercial search engine, we
demonstrate that both approaches significantly outperform a baseline model
built on well-selected text features and a state-of-the-art word2vec-based
approach. Finally, by combining the predictions of the deep models introduced
in this study with the prediction of the model in production of the same
commercial search engine, we significantly improve the accuracy and the
calibration of the click-through rate prediction of the production system.Comment: SIGIR2017, 10 page
Genetic Programming for Smart Phone Personalisation
Personalisation in smart phones requires adaptability to dynamic context
based on user mobility, application usage and sensor inputs. Current
personalisation approaches, which rely on static logic that is developed a
priori, do not provide sufficient adaptability to dynamic and unexpected
context. This paper proposes genetic programming (GP), which can evolve program
logic in realtime, as an online learning method to deal with the highly dynamic
context in smart phone personalisation. We introduce the concept of
collaborative smart phone personalisation through the GP Island Model, in order
to exploit shared context among co-located phone users and reduce convergence
time. We implement these concepts on real smartphones to demonstrate the
capability of personalisation through GP and to explore the benefits of the
Island Model. Our empirical evaluations on two example applications confirm
that the Island Model can reduce convergence time by up to two-thirds over

A Multi-view Context-aware Approach to Android Malware Detection and Malicious Code Localization
Existing Android malware detection approaches use a variety of features such
as security sensitive APIs, system calls, control-flow structures and
information flows in conjunction with Machine Learning classifiers to achieve
accurate detection. Each of these feature sets provides a unique semantic
perspective (or view) of apps' behaviours with inherent strengths and
limitations. Meaning, some views are more amenable to detect certain attacks
but may not be suitable to characterise several other attacks. Most of the
existing malware detection approaches use only one (or a selected few) of the
aforementioned feature sets which prevent them from detecting a vast majority
of attacks. Addressing this limitation, we propose MKLDroid, a unified
framework that systematically integrates multiple views of apps for performing
comprehensive malware detection and malicious code localisation. The rationale
is that, while a malware app can disguise itself in some views, disguising in
every view while maintaining malicious intent will be much harder.
MKLDroid uses a graph kernel to capture structural and contextual information
from apps' dependency graphs and identify malice code patterns in each view.
Subsequently, it employs Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) to find a weighted
combination of the views which yields the best detection accuracy. Besides
multi-view learning, MKLDroid's unique and salient trait is its ability to
locate fine-grained malice code portions in dependency graphs (e.g.,
methods/classes). Through our large-scale experiments on several datasets
(incl. wild apps), we demonstrate that MKLDroid outperforms three
state-of-the-art techniques consistently, in terms of accuracy while
maintaining comparable efficiency. In our malicious code localisation
experiments on a dataset of repackaged malware, MKLDroid was able to identify
all the malice classes with 94% average recall
