    A usability study on the use of multi-context visualization

    Graph visualization has been widely used in real-world applications, as it provides better presentation of overall data structure. However, there are navigation problems existing in deep and large relational datasets. To address these challenges, a new technique called multi-context visualization, which provides users with rich contextual information, has been proposed as the solution to the navigation in large scale datasets. This paper evaluates the multi-context visualization by conducting an experiment-based user study. To answer whether the more contextual information positively assist in making more accurate and easier decisions, it aims to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the multi-context visualization, by measuring the user performance. Specifically, this usability test was designed to test if the use of multiple context views can improve navigation problems for deep and large relational data sets. © 2008 IEEE

    Highlighting in information visualization: A survey

    Highlighting was the basic viewing control mechanism in computer graphics and visualization to guide users' attention in reading diagrams, images, graphs and digital texts. As the rapid growth of theory and practice in information visualization, highlighting has extended its role that acts as not only a viewing control, but also an interaction control and a graphic recommendation mechanism in knowledge visualization and visual analytics. In this work, we attempt to give a formal summarization and classification of the existing highlighting methods and techniques that can be applied in Information Visualization, Visual Analytics and Knowledge Visualization. We propose a new three-layer model of highlighting. We discuss the responsibilities of each layer in the different stage of the visual information processing. © 2010 IEEE

    Evolutionary Strategies for Data Mining

    Learning classifier systems (LCS) have been successful in generating rules for solving classification problems in data mining. The rules are of the form IF condition THEN action. The condition encodes the features of the input space and the action encodes the class label. What is lacking in those systems is the ability to express each feature using a function that is appropriate for that feature. The genetic algorithm is capable of doing this but cannot because only one type of membership function is provided. Thus, the genetic algorithm learns only the shape and placement of the membership function, and in some cases, the number of partitions generated by this function. The research conducted in this study employs a learning classifier system to generate the rules for solving classification problems, but also incorporates multiple types of membership functions, allowing the genetic algorithm to choose an appropriate one for each feature of the input space and determine the number of partitions generated by each function. In addition, three membership functions were introduced. This paper describes the framework and implementation of this modified learning classifier system (M-LCS). Using the M-LCS model, classifiers were simulated for two benchmark classification problems and two additional real-world problems. The results of these four simulations indicate that the M-LCS model provides an alternative approach to designing a learning classifier system. The following contributions are made to the field of computing: 1) a framework for developing a learning classifier system that employs multiple types of membership functions, 2) a model, M-LCS, that was developed from the framework, and 3) the addition of three membership functions that have not been used in the design of learning classifier systems

The preservation of context and history information in the visualization can improve user comprehension of the exploration process as well as enhance the reusability of mining techniques and parameters to archive the desired results. This chapter presents methodology and various interactive visualization techniques supporting visual data mining in general as well as for visual preservation of context and history information. Algorithms are also described in supporting such methodology for visual data mining in real time. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
