    Content-based multi-criteria similarity assessment of CAD assembly models

    The use of Digital Mock-Up (DMU) has become mainstream to support the engineering activities all along the Product Development Process. Over the years, companies generate large databases containing digital models and documents related to their products. Considering complex products, the DMU can be composed of several hundred thousand parts assembled together in assembly trees containing tens of sub-assemblies, and representing several terabytes of data. The ability to retrieve existing models is crucial for the competitiveness of companies, as it can help to leverage existing solutions, results and knowledge associated with previous products. To speed up the access to this large amount of reusable information, CAD models search approaches have been proposed, including the so-called content-based search techniques which do not rely on metadata and data organization but exploit the implicit knowledge embedded in the models. As part of a system for the retrieval of CAD assembly models, this paper introduces a set of four measures to evaluate assembly similarities according to multiple criteria. These measures are combined to assess three different levels of similarity (local, partial and global). The local measure only considers the contribution of the parts that are similar in the compared assemblies, while partial and global measures take also into account the number of similar parts compared to the total number of parts in the query and in the target model. Moreover, an ad-hoc visualization interface has been designed to clearly highlight the different similarities and to allow a fast identification of the target models. The validation of the proposed method is discussed, the dataset used to this aim is provided with the specification of the adopted ground truth and some examples of the obtained results are shown

    Knowledge data discovery and data mining in a design environment

    Designers, in the process of satisfying design requirements, generally encounter difficulties in, firstly, understanding the problem and secondly, finding a solution [Cross 1998]. Often the process of understanding the problem and developing a feasible solution are developed simultaneously by proposing a solution to gauge the extent to which the solution satisfies the specific requirements. Support for future design activities has long been recognised to exist in the form of past design cases, however the varying degrees of similarity and dissimilarity found between previous and current design requirements and solutions has restrained the effectiveness of utilising past design solutions. The knowledge embedded within past designs provides a source of experience with the potential to be utilised in future developments provided that the ability to structure and manipulate that knowledgecan be made a reality. The importance of providing the ability to manipulate past design knowledge, allows the ranging viewpoints experienced by a designer, during a design process, to be reflected and supported. Data Mining systems are gaining acceptance in several domains but to date remain largely unrecognised in terms of the potential to support design activities. It is the focus of this paper to introduce the functionality possessed within the realm of Data Mining tools, and to evaluate the level of support that may be achieved in manipulating and utilising experiential knowledge to satisfy designers' ranging perspectives throughout a product's development

    Outsourcing labour to the cloud

    Various forms of open sourcing to the online population are establishing themselves as cheap, effective methods of getting work done. These have revolutionised the traditional methods for innovation and have contributed to the enrichment of the concept of 'open innovation'. To date, the literature concerning this emerging topic has been spread across a diverse number of media, disciplines and academic journals. This paper attempts for the first time to survey the emerging phenomenon of open outsourcing of work to the internet using 'cloud computing'. The paper describes the volunteer origins and recent commercialisation of this business service. It then surveys the current platforms, applications and academic literature. Based on this, a generic classification for crowdsourcing tasks and a number of performance metrics are proposed. After discussing strengths and limitations, the paper concludes with an agenda for academic research in this new area

    Relaxed lightweight assembly retrieval using vector space model

    International audienceAssembly searching technologies are important for the improvement of design reusability. However, existing methods require that assemblies possess high-level information, and thus cannot be applied in lightweight assemblies. In this paper, we propose a novel relaxed lightweight assembly retrieval approach based on a vector space model (VSM). By decomposing the assemblies represented in a watertight polygon mesh into bags of parts, and considering the queries as a vague specification of a set of parts, the resilient ranking strategy in VSM is successfully applied in the assembly retrieval. Furthermore, we take the scale-sensitive similarities between parts into the evaluation of matching values, and extend the original VSM to a relaxed matching framework. This framework allows users to input any fuzzy queries, is capable of measuring the results quantitatively, and performs well in retrieving assemblies with specified characteristics. To accelerate the online matching procedure, a typical parts based matching process, as well as a greedy strategy based matching algorithm is presented and integrated in the framework, which makes our system achieve interactive performance. We demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach through various experiments on the prototype system

    Embracing complexity in design is one of the critical issues and challenges of the 21st century. As the realization grows that design activities and artefacts display properties associated with complex adaptive systems, so grows the need to use complexity concepts and methods to understand these properties and inform the design of better artifacts. It is a great challenge because complexity science represents an epistemological and methodological swift that promises a holistic approach in the understanding and operational support of design. But design is also a major contributor in complexity research. Design science is concerned with problems that are fundamental in the sciences in general and complexity sciences in particular. For instance, design has been perceived and studied as a ubiquitous activity inherent in every human activity, as the art of generating hypotheses, as a type of experiment, or as a creative co-evolutionary process. Design science and its established approaches and practices can be a great source for advancement and innovation in complexity science. These proceedings are the result of a workshop organized as part of the activities of a UK government AHRB/EPSRC funded research cluster called Embracing Complexity in Design (www.complexityanddesign.net) and the European Conference in Complex Systems (complexsystems.lri.fr).     Advancing automation and robotics technology for the space station and for the US economy: Submitted to the United States Congress October 1, 1987

    In April 1985, as required by Public Law 98-371, the NASA Advanced Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC) reported to Congress the results of its studies on advanced automation and robotics technology for use on the space station. This material was documented in the initial report (NASA Technical Memorandum 87566). A further requirement of the Law was that ATAC follow NASA's progress in this area and report to Congress semiannually. This report is the fifth in a series of progress updates and covers the period between 16 May 1987 and 30 September 1987. NASA has accepted the basic recommendations of ATAC for its space station efforts. ATAC and NASA agree that the mandate of Congress is that an advanced automation and robotics technology be built to support an evolutionary space station program and serve as a highly visible stimulator affecting the long-term U.S. economy
