Constraint handling strategies in Genetic Algorithms application to optimal batch plant design
Optimal batch plant design is a recurrent issue in Process Engineering, which can be formulated as a Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming(MINLP) optimisation problem involving specific constraints, which can be, typically, the respect of a time horizon for the synthesis of various
products. Genetic Algorithms constitute a common option for the solution of these problems, but their basic operating mode is not always wellsuited to any kind of constraint treatment: if those cannot be integrated in variable encoding or accounted for through adapted genetic operators,
their handling turns to be a thorny issue. The point of this study is thus to test a few constraint handling techniques on a mid-size example in order to determine which one is the best fitted, in the framework of one particular problem formulation. The investigated methods are the elimination of infeasible individuals, the use of a penalty term added in the minimized criterion, the relaxation of the discrete variables upper bounds, dominancebased tournaments and, finally, a multiobjective strategy. The numerical computations, analysed in terms of result quality and of computational time, show the superiority of elimination technique for the former criterion only when the latter one does not become a bottleneck. Besides, when the problem complexity makes the random location of feasible space too difficult, a single tournament technique proves to be the most efficient

Adaptive Ranking Based Constraint Handling for Explicitly Constrained Black-Box Optimization
A novel explicit constraint handling technique for the covariance matrix
adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES) is proposed. The proposed constraint
handling exhibits two invariance properties. One is the invariance to arbitrary
element-wise increasing transformation of the objective and constraint
functions. The other is the invariance to arbitrary affine transformation of
the search space. The proposed technique virtually transforms a constrained
optimization problem into an unconstrained optimization problem by considering
an adaptive weighted sum of the ranking of the objective function values and
the ranking of the constraint violations that are measured by the Mahalanobis
distance between each candidate solution to its projection onto the boundary of
the constraints. Simulation results are presented and show that the CMA-ES with
the proposed constraint handling exhibits the affine invariance and performs
similarly to the CMA-ES on unconstrained counterparts.Comment: 9 page
Competent genetic-evolutionary optimization of water distribution systems
A genetic algorithm has been applied to the optimal design and rehabilitation of a water distribution system. Many of the previous applications have been limited to small water distribution systems, where the computer time used for solving the problem has been relatively small. In order to apply genetic and evolutionary optimization technique to a large-scale water distribution system, this paper employs one of competent genetic-evolutionary algorithms - a messy genetic algorithm to enhance the efficiency of an optimization procedure. A maximum flexibility is ensured by the formulation of a string and solution representation scheme, a fitness definition, and the integration of a well-developed hydraulic network solver that facilitate the application of a genetic algorithm to the optimization of a water distribution system. Two benchmark problems of water pipeline design and a real water distribution system are presented to demonstrate the application of the improved technique. The results obtained show that the number of the design trials required by the messy genetic algorithm is consistently fewer than the other genetic algorithms
Solving the G-problems in less than 500 iterations: Improved efficient constrained optimization by surrogate modeling and adaptive parameter control
Constrained optimization of high-dimensional numerical problems plays an
important role in many scientific and industrial applications. Function
evaluations in many industrial applications are severely limited and no
analytical information about objective function and constraint functions is
available. For such expensive black-box optimization tasks, the constraint
optimization algorithm COBRA was proposed, making use of RBF surrogate modeling
for both the objective and the constraint functions. COBRA has shown remarkable
success in solving reliably complex benchmark problems in less than 500
function evaluations. Unfortunately, COBRA requires careful adjustment of
parameters in order to do so.
In this work we present a new self-adjusting algorithm SACOBRA, which is
based on COBRA and capable to achieve high-quality results with very few
function evaluations and no parameter tuning. It is shown with the help of
performance profiles on a set of benchmark problems (G-problems, MOPTA08) that
SACOBRA consistently outperforms any COBRA algorithm with fixed parameter
setting. We analyze the importance of the several new elements in SACOBRA and
find that each element of SACOBRA plays a role to boost up the overall
optimization performance. We discuss the reasons behind and get in this way a
better understanding of high-quality RBF surrogate modeling
State-of-the-art in aerodynamic shape optimisation methods
Aerodynamic optimisation has become an indispensable component for any aerodynamic design over the past 60 years, with applications to aircraft, cars, trains, bridges, wind turbines, internal pipe flows, and cavities, among others, and is thus relevant in many facets of technology. With advancements in computational power, automated design optimisation procedures have become more competent, however, there is an ambiguity and bias throughout the literature with regards to relative performance of optimisation architectures and employed algorithms. This paper provides a well-balanced critical review of the dominant optimisation approaches that have been integrated with aerodynamic theory for the purpose of shape optimisation. A total of 229 papers, published in more than 120 journals and conference proceedings, have been classified into 6 different optimisation algorithm approaches. The material cited includes some of the most well-established authors and publications in the field of aerodynamic optimisation. This paper aims to eliminate bias toward certain algorithms by analysing the limitations, drawbacks, and the benefits of the most utilised optimisation approaches. This review provides comprehensive but straightforward insight for non-specialists and reference detailing the current state for specialist practitioners
Constrained Optimization with Evolutionary Algorithms: A Comprehensive Review
Global optimization is an essential part of any kind of system. Various algorithms have been proposed that try to imitate the learning and problem solving abilities of the nature up to certain level. The main idea of all nature-inspired algorithms is to generate an interconnected network of individuals, a population. Although most of unconstrained optimization problems can be easily handled with Evolutionary Algorithms (EA), constrained optimization problems (COPs) are very complex. In this paper, a comprehensive literature review will be presented which summarizes the constraint handling techniques for COP
Adaptive Double Chain Quantum Genetic Algorithm for Constrained Optimization Problems
Optimization problems are often highly constrained and evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are effective methods to tackle this kind of problems. To further improve search efficiency and convergence rate of EAs, this paper presents an adaptive double chain quantum genetic algorithm (ADCQGA) for solving constrained optimization problems. ADCQGA makes use of double-individuals to represent solutions that are classified as feasible and infeasible solutions. Fitness (or evaluation) functions are defined for both types of solutions. Based on the fitness function, three types of step evolution (SE) are defined and utilized for judging evolutionary individuals. An adaptive rotation is proposed and used to facilitate updating individuals in different solutions. To further improve the search capability and convergence rate, ADCQGA utilizes an adaptive evolution process (AEP), adaptive mutation and replacement techniques. ADCQGA was first tested on a widely used benchmark function to illustrate the relationship between initial parameter values and the convergence rate/search capability. Then the proposed ADCQGA is successfully applied to solve other twelve benchmark functions and five well-known constrained engineering design problems. Multi-aircraft cooperative target allocation problem is a typical constrained optimization problem and requires efficient methods to tackle. Finally, ADCQGA is successfully applied to solving the target allocation problem

The definitive peer-reviewed and edited version of this article is published in Journal of Hydroinformatics Vol.16 (2), pp. 288–301 (2014), DOI: 10.2166/hydro.2013.218 and is available at www.iwapublishing.comThis paper describes the development of an adaptive locally constrained genetic algorithm (ALCO-GA) and its application to the problem of least cost water distribution network design. Genetic algorithms have been used widely for the optimisation of both theoretical and real-world nonlinear optimisation problems, including water system design and maintenance problems. In this work we propose a heuristic-based approach to the mutation of chromosomes with the algorithm employing an adaptive mutation operator which utilises hydraulic head information and an elementary heuristic to increase the efficiency of the algorithm's search into the feasible solution space. In almost all test instances ALCO-GA displays faster convergence and reaches the feasible solution space faster than the standard genetic algorithm. ALCO-GA also achieves high optimality when compared to solutions from the literature and often obtains better solutions than the standard genetic algorithm
