    MAP: Medial Axis Based Geometric Routing in Sensor Networks

    One of the challenging tasks in the deployment of dense wireless networks (like sensor networks) is in devising a routing scheme for node to node communication. Important consideration includes scalability, routing complexity, the length of the communication paths and the load sharing of the routes. In this paper, we show that a compact and expressive abstraction of network connectivity by the medial axis enables efficient and localized routing. We propose MAP, a Medial Axis based naming and routing Protocol that does not require locations, makes routing decisions locally, and achieves good load balancing. In its preprocessing phase, MAP constructs the medial axis of the sensor field, defined as the set of nodes with at least two closest boundary nodes. The medial axis of the network captures both the complex geometry and non-trivial topology of the sensor field. It can be represented compactly by a graph whose size is comparable with the complexity of the geometric features (e.g., the number of holes). Each node is then given a name related to its position with respect to the medial axis. The routing scheme is derived through local decisions based on the names of the source and destination nodes and guarantees delivery with reasonable and natural routes. We show by both theoretical analysis and simulations that our medial axis based geometric routing scheme is scalable, produces short routes, achieves excellent load balancing, and is very robust to variations in the network model

    D-SLATS: Distributed Simultaneous Localization and Time Synchronization

    Through the last decade, we have witnessed a surge of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and with that a greater need to choreograph their actions across both time and space. Although these two problems, namely time synchronization and localization, share many aspects in common, they are traditionally treated separately or combined on centralized approaches that results in an ineffcient use of resources, or in solutions that are not scalable in terms of the number of IoT devices. Therefore, we propose D-SLATS, a framework comprised of three different and independent algorithms to jointly solve time synchronization and localization problems in a distributed fashion. The First two algorithms are based mainly on the distributed Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) whereas the third one uses optimization techniques. No fusion center is required, and the devices only communicate with their neighbors. The proposed methods are evaluated on custom Ultra-Wideband communication Testbed and a quadrotor, representing a network of both static and mobile nodes. Our algorithms achieve up to three microseconds time synchronization accuracy and 30 cm localization error

    Connectivity-Based Self-Localization in WSNs

    Efficient localization methods are among the major challenges in wireless sensor networks today. In this paper, we present our so-called connectivity based approach i.e, based on local connectivity information, to tackle this problem. At first the method fragments the network into larger groups labeled as packs. Based on the mutual connectivity relations with their surrounding packs, we identify border nodes as well as the central node. As this first approach requires some a-priori knowledge on the network topology, we also present a novel segment-based fragmentation method to estimate the central pack of the network as well as detecting so-called corner packs without any a-priori knowledge. Based on these detected points, the network is fragmented into a set of even larger elements, so-called segments built on top of the packs, supporting even more localization information as they all reach the central node

    Dynamic Construction of Stimulus Values in the Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex

    Signals representing the value assigned to stimuli at the time of choice have been repeatedly observed in ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC). Yet it remains unknown how these value representations are computed from sensory and memory representations in more posterior brain regions. We used electroencephalography (EEG) while subjects evaluated appetitive and aversive food items to study how event-related responses modulated by stimulus value evolve over time. We found that value-related activity shifted from posterior to anterior, and from parietal to central to frontal sensors, across three major time windows after stimulus onset: 150–250 ms, 400–550 ms, and 700–800 ms. Exploratory localization of the EEG signal revealed a shifting network of activity moving from sensory and memory structures to areas associated with value coding, with stimulus value activity localized to vmPFC only from 400 ms onwards. Consistent with these results, functional connectivity analyses also showed a causal flow of information from temporal cortex to vmPFC. Thus, although value signals are present as early as 150 ms after stimulus onset, the value signals in vmPFC appear relatively late in the choice process, and seem to reflect the integration of incoming information from sensory and memory related regions

    DisLoc: A Convex Partitioning Based Approach for Distributed 3-D Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Accurate localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is fundamental to many applications, such as geographic routing and position-aware data processing. This, however, is challenging in large scale 3-D WSNs due to the irregular topology, such as holes in the path, of the network. The irregular topology may cause overestimated Euclidean distance between nodes as the communication path is bent and accordingly introduces severe errors in 3-D WSN localization. As an effort towards the issue, this paper develops a distributed algorithm to achieve accurate 3-D WSN localization. Our proposal is composed of two steps, segmentation and joint localization. In specific, the entire network is first divided into several subnetworks by applying the approximate convex partitioning. A spatial convex node recognition mechanism is developed to assist the network segmentation, which relies on the connectivity information only. After that, each subnetwork is accurately localized by using the multidimensional scaling-based algorithm. The proposed localization algorithm also applies a new 3-D coordinate transformation algorithm, which helps reduce the errors introduced by coordinate integration between subnetworks and improve the localization accuracy. Using extensive simulations, we show that our proposal can effectively segment a complex 3-D sensor network and significantly improve the localization rate in comparison with existing solutions
