    Bandwidth and Energy-Efficient Route Discovery for Noisy Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

    Broadcasting is used in on-demand routing protocols to discover routes in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). On-demand routing protocols, such as Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) commonly employ pure flooding based broadcasting to discover new routes. In pure flooding, a route request (RREQ) packet is broadcast by the source node and each receiving node rebroadcasts it. This continues until the RREQ packet arrives at the destination node. Pure flooding generates excessive redundant routing traffic that may lead to the broadcast storm problem (BSP) and deteriorate the performance of MANETs significantly. A number of probabilistic broadcasting schemes have been proposed in the literature to address BSP. However, these schemes do not consider thermal noise and interference which exist in real life MANETs, and therefore, do not perform well in real life MANETs. Real life MANETs are noisy and the communication is not error free. This research argues that a broadcast scheme that considers the effects of thermal noise, co-channel interference, and node density in the neighbourhood simultaneously can reduce the broadcast storm problem and enhance the MANET performance. To achieve this, three investigations have been carried out: First, the effect of carrier sensing ranges on on-demand routing protocol such as AODV and their impact on interference; second, effects of thermal noise on on-demand routing protocols and third, evaluation of pure flooding and probabilistic broadcasting schemes under noisy and noiseless conditions. The findings of these investigations are exploited to propose a Channel Adaptive Probabilistic Broadcast (CAPB) scheme to disseminate RREQ packets efficiently. The proposed CAPB scheme determines the probability of rebroadcasting RREQ packets on the fly according to the current Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) and node density in the neighbourhood. The proposed scheme and two related state of the art (SoA) schemes from the literature are implemented in the standard AODV to replace the pure flooding based broadcast scheme. Ns-2 simulation results show that the proposed CAPB scheme outperforms the other schemes in terms of routing overhead, average end-to-end delay, throughput and energy consumption

    A novel cost-based replica server placement for optimal service quality in cloud-based content delivery network

    Replica server placement is one of the crucial concerns for a given geographic diversity associated with placement problems in content delivery network (CDN). After reviewing the existing literatures, it is noted that studies are more for solving placement problem in conventional CDN and not much over cloud-based CDN architectures, which some few studies are reported towards replica selection are much in its nascent stages of development. Moreover, such models are not benchmarked or practically assessed to prove its effectiveness. Hence, the proposed study introduces a novel design of computational framework associated with cloud-based CDN which can facilitate cost-effective replica server management for enhanced service delivery. Implemented using analytical research methodology, the simulated study outcome shows that proposed scheme offers reduced cost, reduced resource dependencies, reduced latency, and faster processing time in contrast to existing models of replica server placement

    Enhanced multichannel routing protocols in MANET

    Utilising multiple non-overlapping channels in MANET networking can improve performance and capacity. Most multichannel MAC and routing protocols rely on an extra radio interface, a common control channel or time synchronisation to support channel selection and routing, but only at the expense of hardware and power consumption costs. This thesis considers an alternative type of multichannel wireless network where each node has a single half-duplex radio interface and does not rely on a common control channel or time synchronisation. Multichannel MAC and routing protocols that adopt the Receiver Directed Transmission (RDT) communication scheme are investigated to assess their ability to implement a multichannel MANET. A novel multipath multichannel routing protocol called RMMMC is proposed to enhance reliability and fault-tolerance in the MANET. RMMMC introduces new route discovery and recovery processes. The former establishes multiple node and channel disjointed paths in different channels and accumulates them to acquire a full multi-hop path to each destination. The latter detects broken links and repairs them using pre-discovered backup routes. To enhance communication reliability, a novel cross-layer multichannel MAC mechanism called RIVC is proposed. It mitigates transmitting/rerouting data packets to a node that does not have an updated route information towards a destination and only allows data packets with valid routes to occupy the medium. The optional access mode in the MAC protocol is modified to early detect invalid routes at intermediate nodes and switchover to an alternative path. A new cross-layer multichannel MAC mechanism called MB is proposed to reduce contention in a busy channel and enhance load balancing. MB modifies the MAC back-off algorithm to let a transmitter node invoke an alternative path in the alternative channel when the retry count threshold is reached. The proposed multichannel protocols are implemented and evaluated by extensive NS2 simulation studies

    As redes veiculares têm sido alvo de grandes avanços nos últimos anos, sobretudo devido ao crescente interesse por veículos inteligentes e autónomos que motiva investimentos avultados por parte da indústria automóvel. A inexistência de uma forma oportuna e económica de executar atualizações OTA (over-the-air) está a contribuir para o adiar do lançamento de grandes frotas de veículos inteligentes. O custo associado à transmissão de dados através de redes celulares é muito elevado e não se pode garantir que cada veículo tenha acesso a uma estação ou estacionamento com conectividade adequada em tempo útil, onde possa obter os dados esperados. Com base nestas premissas, esta tese apresenta a concepção e implementação de um protocolo cooperativo de disseminação de conteúdos que aproveita as ligações Veículo-a-Veículo (V2V) para assegurar uma distribuição de dados pela rede com custos reduzidos. Além disso, este trabalho é complementado e suportado com uma análise do desempenho do protocolo numa rede de 25 veículos.Vehicular networks have seen great advancements over the last few years, mostly due to the increased eagerness for smart and autonomous vehicles that motivate hefty investments by the automotive industry. The absence of a timely and cost-effective way to perform over-the-air (OTA) updates is contributing to defer the deployment of large fleets of connected vehicles. There is a high cost associated with transmitting data over cellular networks and it cannot be expected that every vehicle has access to a station or depot with adequate connectivity where it can get the awaited data cheaply nor that this solution happens timely enough. With this in mind, this thesis presents the design and implementation of a cooperative content dissemination protocol that takes advantage of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication links to distribute data across a network with reduced costs. Moreover, this work is complemented with a performance analysis of the protocol on a deployed network of 25 vehicles
