Qualitative Analysis of Concurrent Mean-payoff Games
We consider concurrent games played by two-players on a finite-state graph,
where in every round the players simultaneously choose a move, and the current
state along with the joint moves determine the successor state. We study a
fundamental objective, namely, mean-payoff objective, where a reward is
associated to each transition, and the goal of player 1 is to maximize the
long-run average of the rewards, and the objective of player 2 is strictly the
opposite. The path constraint for player 1 could be qualitative, i.e., the
mean-payoff is the maximal reward, or arbitrarily close to it; or quantitative,
i.e., a given threshold between the minimal and maximal reward. We consider the
computation of the almost-sure (resp. positive) winning sets, where player 1
can ensure that the path constraint is satisfied with probability 1 (resp.
positive probability). Our main results for qualitative path constraints are as
follows: (1) we establish qualitative determinacy results that show that for
every state either player 1 has a strategy to ensure almost-sure (resp.
positive) winning against all player-2 strategies, or player 2 has a spoiling
strategy to falsify almost-sure (resp. positive) winning against all player-1
strategies; (2) we present optimal strategy complexity results that precisely
characterize the classes of strategies required for almost-sure and positive
winning for both players; and (3) we present quadratic time algorithms to
compute the almost-sure and the positive winning sets, matching the best known
bound of algorithms for much simpler problems (such as reachability
objectives). For quantitative constraints we show that a polynomial time
solution for the almost-sure or the positive winning set would imply a solution
to a long-standing open problem (the value problem for turn-based deterministic
mean-payoff games) that is not known to be solvable in polynomial time
Aspect oriented pluggable support for parallel computing
In this paper, we present an approach to develop parallel applications based on aspect oriented programming. We propose a collection of aspects to implement group communication mechanisms on parallel applications. In our approach, parallelisation code is developed by composing the collection into the application core functionality. The approach requires fewer changes to sequential applications to parallelise the core functionality than current alternatives and yields more modular code. The Project Scheduling Problem with Non-Deterministic Activities Duration: A Literature Review
Purpose: The goal of this article is to provide an extensive literature review of the models and solution procedures proposed by many researchers interested on the Project Scheduling Problem with nondeterministic activities duration. Design/methodology/approach: This paper presents an exhaustive literature review, identifying the existing models where the activities duration were taken as uncertain or random parameters. In order to get published articles since 1996, was employed the Scopus database. The articles were selected on the basis of reviews of abstracts, methodologies, and conclusions. The results were classified according to following characteristics: year of publication, mathematical representation of the activities duration, solution techniques applied, and type of problem solved. Findings: Genetic Algorithms (GA) was pointed out as the main solution technique employed by researchers, and the Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) as the most studied type of problem. On the other hand, the application of new solution techniques, and the possibility of incorporating traditional methods into new PSP variants was presented as research trends. Originality/value: This literature review contents not only a descriptive analysis of the published articles but also a statistical information section in order to examine the state of the research activity carried out in relation to the Project Scheduling Problem with non-deterministic activities duration.Peer Reviewe
Fish oil (n-3 fatty acids) in drug resistant epilepsy: a randomised placebo-controlled crossover study.
Backgroundn-3 fatty acids inhibit neuronal excitability and reduce seizures in animal models. High-dose fish oil has been explored in two randomised trials in drug resistant epilepsy with negative results. We performed a phase II randomised controlled crossover trial of low-dose and high-dose fish oil in participants with drug resistant epilepsy to explore whether low-dose or high-dose fish oil reduces seizures or improves cardiovascular health.MethodsRandomised placebo-controlled trial of low-dose and high-dose fish oil versus placebo (corn oil, linoleic acid) in 24 participants with drug resistant epilepsy. A three-period crossover design was utilised lasting 42 weeks, with three 10-week treatment periods and two 6-week washout periods. All participants were randomised in double-blind fashion to receive placebo, high dose or low dose in different sequences. The primary outcome was per cent change in total seizure frequency.FindingsLow-dose fish oil (3 capsules/day, 1080 mg eicosapentaenoic acid+docosahexaenoic acid) was associated with a 33.6% reduction in seizure frequency compared with placebo. Low-dose fish oil was also associated with a mild but significant reduction in blood pressure. High-dose fish oil was no different than placebo in reducing seizures or improving cardiac risk factors.InterpretationIn this phase II randomised crossover trial, low-dose fish oil was effective in reducing seizures compared with placebo. The magnitude of improvement is similar to that of recent antiepileptic drug trials in drug resistant epilepsy (DRE). The results indicate that low-dose fish oil may reduce seizures and improve the health of people with epilepsy. These findings justify a large multicentre randomised trial of low-dose fish oil (n-3 fatty acids <1080 mg/day) in drug resistant epilepsy.Trial registration numberNCT00871377
