    An Empirical Analysis of the Role of Amplifiers, Downtoners, and Negations in Emotion Classification in Microblogs

    The effect of amplifiers, downtoners, and negations has been studied in general and particularly in the context of sentiment analysis. However, there is only limited work which aims at transferring the results and methods to discrete classes of emotions, e. g., joy, anger, fear, sadness, surprise, and disgust. For instance, it is not straight-forward to interpret which emotion the phrase "not happy" expresses. With this paper, we aim at obtaining a better understanding of such modifiers in the context of emotion-bearing words and their impact on document-level emotion classification, namely, microposts on Twitter. We select an appropriate scope detection method for modifiers of emotion words, incorporate it in a document-level emotion classification model as additional bag of words and show that this approach improves the performance of emotion classification. In addition, we build a term weighting approach based on the different modifiers into a lexical model for the analysis of the semantics of modifiers and their impact on emotion meaning. We show that amplifiers separate emotions expressed with an emotion- bearing word more clearly from other secondary connotations. Downtoners have the opposite effect. In addition, we discuss the meaning of negations of emotion-bearing words. For instance we show empirically that "not happy" is closer to sadness than to anger and that fear-expressing words in the scope of downtoners often express surprise.Comment: Accepted for publication at The 5th IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA), https://dsaa2018.isi.it

    Measuring, Predicting and Visualizing Short-Term Change in Word Representation and Usage in VKontakte Social Network

    Language in social media is extremely dynamic: new words emerge, trend and disappear, while the meaning of existing words can fluctuate over time. Such dynamics are especially notable during a period of crisis. This work addresses several important tasks of measuring, visualizing and predicting short term text representation shift, i.e. the change in a word's contextual semantics, and contrasting such shift with surface level word dynamics, or concept drift, observed in social media streams. Unlike previous approaches on learning word representations from text, we study the relationship between short-term concept drift and representation shift on a large social media corpus - VKontakte posts in Russian collected during the Russia-Ukraine crisis in 2014-2015. Our novel contributions include quantitative and qualitative approaches to (1) measure short-term representation shift and contrast it with surface level concept drift; (2) build predictive models to forecast short-term shifts in meaning from previous meaning as well as from concept drift; and (3) visualize short-term representation shift for example keywords to demonstrate the practical use of our approach to discover and track meaning of newly emerging terms in social media. We show that short-term representation shift can be accurately predicted up to several weeks in advance. Our unique approach to modeling and visualizing word representation shifts in social media can be used to explore and characterize specific aspects of the streaming corpus during crisis events and potentially improve other downstream classification tasks including real-time event detection

    Concept Drift and Adaptation for Emotion Detection in Twitter

    The classification task in dynamical environments is challenging. A reason for this is the change of their statistical properties over time. This characteristic is called concept drift and is one of the major topics in data mining. The objective of this thesis is to analyze, how accurate different systems are classifying in dynamical environments over a period of time. For this purpose, two different approaches are evaluated. One approach removes the features with the highest change in influence. The other is an ensemble based model which let experts vote between the outcomes. Although the models were not able to increase the accuracy after a long period of time, the results show that both models are able to achieve a higher accuracy than the baseline in particular cases. This outcome underlines that emotion detection in Twitter can be improved. New models or improvements to existing ones could be able to handle concept drift to achieve a higher accuracy

    On Leveraging Next-Generation Deep Learning Techniques for IoT Malware Classification, Family Attribution and Lineage Analysis

    Recent years have witnessed the emergence of new and more sophisticated malware targeting insecure Internet of Things (IoT) devices, as part of orchestrated large-scale botnets. Moreover, the public release of the source code of popular malware families such as Mirai [1] has spawned diverse variants, making it harder to disambiguate their ownership, lineage, and correct label. Such a rapidly evolving landscape makes it also harder to deploy and generalize effective learning models against retired, updated, and/or new threat campaigns. To mitigate such threat, there is an utmost need for effective IoT malware detection, classification and family attribution, which provide essential steps towards initiating attack mitigation/prevention countermeasures, as well as understanding the evolutionary trajectories and tangled relationships of IoT malware. This is particularly challenging due to the lack of fine-grained empirical data about IoT malware, the diverse architectures of IoT-targeted devices, and the massive code reuse between IoT malware families. To address these challenges, in this thesis, we leverage the general lack of obfuscation in IoT malware to extract and combine static features from multi-modal views of the executable binaries (e.g., images, strings, assembly instructions), along with Deep Learning (DL) architectures for effective IoT malware classification and family attribution. Additionally, we aim to address concept drift and the limitations of inter-family classification due to the evolutionary nature of IoT malware, by detecting in-class evolving IoT malware variants and interpreting the meaning behind their mutations. To this end, we perform the following to achieve our objectives: First, we analyze 70,000 IoT malware samples collected by a specialized IoT honeypot and popular malware repositories in the past 3 years. Consequently, we utilize features extracted from strings- and image-based representations of IoT malware to implement a multi-level DL architecture that fuses the learned features from each sub-component (i.e, images, strings) through a neural network classifier. Our in-depth experiments with four prominent IoT malware families highlight the significant accuracy of the proposed approach (99.78%), which outperforms conventional single-level classifiers, by relying on different representations of the target IoT malware binaries that do not require expensive feature extraction. Additionally, we utilize our IoT-tailored approach for labeling unknown malware samples, while identifying new malware strains. Second, we seek to identify when the classifier shows signs of aging, by which it fails to effectively recognize new variants and adapt to potential changes in the data. Thus, we introduce a robust and effective method that uses contrastive learning and attentive Transformer models to learn and compare semantically meaningful representations of IoT malware binaries and codes without the need for expensive target labels. We find that the evolution of IoT binaries can be used as an augmentation strategy to learn effective representations to contrast (dis)similar variant pairs. We discuss the impact and findings of our analysis and present several evaluation studies to highlight the tangled relationships of IoT malware, as well as the efficiency of our contrastively learned fine-grained feature vectors in preserving semantics and reducing out-of-vocabulary size in cross-architecture IoT malware binaries. We conclude this thesis by summarizing our findings and discussing research gaps that lay the way for future work

    Políticas de Copyright de Publicações Científicas em Repositórios Institucionais: O Caso do INESC TEC

    A progressiva transformação das práticas científicas, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento das novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC), têm possibilitado aumentar o acesso à informação, caminhando gradualmente para uma abertura do ciclo de pesquisa. Isto permitirá resolver a longo prazo uma adversidade que se tem colocado aos investigadores, que passa pela existência de barreiras que limitam as condições de acesso, sejam estas geográficas ou financeiras. Apesar da produção científica ser dominada, maioritariamente, por grandes editoras comerciais, estando sujeita às regras por estas impostas, o Movimento do Acesso Aberto cuja primeira declaração pública, a Declaração de Budapeste (BOAI), é de 2002, vem propor alterações significativas que beneficiam os autores e os leitores. Este Movimento vem a ganhar importância em Portugal desde 2003, com a constituição do primeiro repositório institucional a nível nacional. Os repositórios institucionais surgiram como uma ferramenta de divulgação da produção científica de uma instituição, com o intuito de permitir abrir aos resultados da investigação, quer antes da publicação e do próprio processo de arbitragem (preprint), quer depois (postprint), e, consequentemente, aumentar a visibilidade do trabalho desenvolvido por um investigador e a respetiva instituição. O estudo apresentado, que passou por uma análise das políticas de copyright das publicações científicas mais relevantes do INESC TEC, permitiu não só perceber que as editoras adotam cada vez mais políticas que possibilitam o auto-arquivo das publicações em repositórios institucionais, como também que existe todo um trabalho de sensibilização a percorrer, não só para os investigadores, como para a instituição e toda a sociedade. A produção de um conjunto de recomendações, que passam pela implementação de uma política institucional que incentive o auto-arquivo das publicações desenvolvidas no âmbito institucional no repositório, serve como mote para uma maior valorização da produção científica do INESC TEC.The progressive transformation of scientific practices, driven by the development of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which made it possible to increase access to information, gradually moving towards an opening of the research cycle. This opening makes it possible to resolve, in the long term, the adversity that has been placed on researchers, which involves the existence of barriers that limit access conditions, whether geographical or financial. Although large commercial publishers predominantly dominate scientific production and subject it to the rules imposed by them, the Open Access movement whose first public declaration, the Budapest Declaration (BOAI), was in 2002, proposes significant changes that benefit the authors and the readers. This Movement has gained importance in Portugal since 2003, with the constitution of the first institutional repository at the national level. Institutional repositories have emerged as a tool for disseminating the scientific production of an institution to open the results of the research, both before publication and the preprint process and postprint, increase the visibility of work done by an investigator and his or her institution. The present study, which underwent an analysis of the copyright policies of INESC TEC most relevant scientific publications, allowed not only to realize that publishers are increasingly adopting policies that make it possible to self-archive publications in institutional repositories, all the work of raising awareness, not only for researchers but also for the institution and the whole society. The production of a set of recommendations, which go through the implementation of an institutional policy that encourages the self-archiving of the publications developed in the institutional scope in the repository, serves as a motto for a greater appreciation of the scientific production of INESC TEC
