    Probabilistic Methodology and Techniques for Artefact Conception and Development

    The purpose of this paper is to make a state of the art on probabilistic methodology and techniques for artefact conception and development. It is the 8th deliverable of the BIBA (Bayesian Inspired Brain and Artefacts) project. We first present the incompletness problem as the central difficulty that both living creatures and artefacts have to face: how can they perceive, infer, decide and act efficiently with incomplete and uncertain knowledge?. We then introduce a generic probabilistic formalism called Bayesian Programming. This formalism is then used to review the main probabilistic methodology and techniques. This review is organized in 3 parts: first the probabilistic models from Bayesian networks to Kalman filters and from sensor fusion to CAD systems, second the inference techniques and finally the learning and model acquisition and comparison methodologies. We conclude with the perspectives of the BIBA project as they rise from this state of the art

    Multiobjective Tactical Planning under Uncertainty for Air Traffic Flow and Capacity Management

    We investigate a method to deal with congestion of sectors and delays in the tactical phase of air traffic flow and capacity management. It relies on temporal objectives given for every point of the flight plans and shared among the controllers in order to create a collaborative environment. This would enhance the transition from the network view of the flow management to the local view of air traffic control. Uncertainty is modeled at the trajectory level with temporal information on the boundary points of the crossed sectors and then, we infer the probabilistic occupancy count. Therefore, we can model the accuracy of the trajectory prediction in the optimization process in order to fix some safety margins. On the one hand, more accurate is our prediction; more efficient will be the proposed solutions, because of the tighter safety margins. On the other hand, when uncertainty is not negligible, the proposed solutions will be more robust to disruptions. Furthermore, a multiobjective algorithm is used to find the tradeoff between the delays and congestion, which are antagonist in airspace with high traffic density. The flow management position can choose manually, or automatically with a preference-based algorithm, the adequate solution. This method is tested against two instances, one with 10 flights and 5 sectors and one with 300 flights and 16 sectors.Comment: IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation (2013). arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1309.391

    UPGMpp: a Software Library for Contextual Object Recognition

    Object recognition is a cornerstone task towards the scene understanding problem. Recent works in the field boost their perfor- mance by incorporating contextual information to the traditional use of the objects’ geometry and/or appearance. These contextual cues are usually modeled through Conditional Random Fields (CRFs), a partic- ular type of undirected Probabilistic Graphical Model (PGM), and are exploited by means of probabilistic inference methods. In this work we present the Undirected Probabilistic Graphical Models in C++ library (UPGMpp), an open source solution for representing, training, and per- forming inference over undirected PGMs in general, and CRFs in par- ticular. The UPGMpp library supposes a reliable and comprehensive workbench for recognition systems exploiting contextual information, in- cluding a variety of inference methods based on local search, graph cuts, and message passing approaches. This paper illustrates the virtues of the library, i.e. it is efficient, comprehensive, versatile, and easy to use, by presenting a use-case applied to the object recognition problem in home scenes from the challenging NYU2 dataset.Universidad de Málaga.
