Computing Storyline Visualizations with Few Block Crossings
Storyline visualizations show the structure of a story, by depicting the
interactions of the characters over time. Each character is represented by an
x-monotone curve from left to right, and a meeting is represented by having the
curves of the participating characters run close together for some time. There
have been various approaches to drawing storyline visualizations in an
automated way. In order to keep the visual complexity low, rather than
minimizing pairwise crossings of curves, we count block crossings, that is,
pairs of intersecting bundles of lines.
Partly inspired by the ILP-based approach of Gronemann et al. [GD 2016] for
minimizing the number of pairwise crossings, we model the problem as a
satisfiability problem (since the straightforward ILP formulation becomes more
complicated and harder to solve). Having restricted ourselves to a decision
problem, we can apply powerful SAT solvers to find optimal drawings in
reasonable time. We compare this SAT-based approach with two exact algorithms
for block crossing minimization, using both the benchmark instances of
Gronemann et al. and random instances. We show that the SAT approach is
suitable for real-world instances and identify cases where the other algorithms
are preferable.Comment: Appears in the Proceedings of the 25th International Symposium on

An efficient sparse conjugate gradient solver using a Beneš permutation network
© 2014 Technical University of Munich (TUM).The conjugate gradient (CG) is one of the most widely used iterative methods for solving systems of linear equations. However, parallelizing CG for large sparse systems is difficult due to the inherent irregularity in memory access pattern. We propose a novel processor architecture for the sparse conjugate gradient method. The architecture consists of multiple processing elements and memory banks, and is able to compute efficiently both sparse matrix-vector multiplication, and other dense vector operations. A Beneš permutation network with an optimised control scheme is introduced to reduce memory bank conflicts without expensive logic. We describe a heuristics for offline scheduling, the effect of which is captured in a parametric model for estimating the performance of designs generated from our approach
Optimization of Analytic Window Functions
Analytic functions represent the state-of-the-art way of performing complex
data analysis within a single SQL statement. In particular, an important class
of analytic functions that has been frequently used in commercial systems to
support OLAP and decision support applications is the class of window
functions. A window function returns for each input tuple a value derived from
applying a function over a window of neighboring tuples. However, existing
window function evaluation approaches are based on a naive sorting scheme. In
this paper, we study the problem of optimizing the evaluation of window
functions. We propose several efficient techniques, and identify optimization
opportunities that allow us to optimize the evaluation of a set of window
functions. We have integrated our scheme into PostgreSQL. Our comprehensive
experimental study on the TPC-DS datasets as well as synthetic datasets and
queries demonstrate significant speedup over existing approaches.Comment: VLDB201
An immune system based genetic algorithm using permutation-based dualism for dynamic traveling salesman problems
Copyright @ Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2009.In recent years, optimization in dynamic environments has attracted a growing interest from the genetic algorithm community due to the importance and practicability in real world applications. This paper proposes a new genetic algorithm, based on the inspiration from biological immune systems, to address dynamic traveling salesman problems. Within the proposed algorithm, a permutation-based dualism is introduced in the course of clone process to promote the population diversity. In addition, a memory-based vaccination scheme is presented to further improve its tracking ability in dynamic environments. The experimental results show that the proposed diversification and memory enhancement methods can greatly improve the adaptability of genetic algorithms for dynamic traveling salesman problems. This work was supported by the Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation (NNSF) of China under Grant No. 70431003 and Grant No. 70671020, the Science Fund for Creative Research Group of NNSF of China under GrantNo. 60521003, the National Science and Technology Support Plan of China under Grant No. 2006BAH02A09 and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of UK under Grant No. EP/E060722/1
Communication Efficient Checking of Big Data Operations
We propose fast probabilistic algorithms with low (i.e., sublinear in the
input size) communication volume to check the correctness of operations in Big
Data processing frameworks and distributed databases. Our checkers cover many
of the commonly used operations, including sum, average, median, and minimum
aggregation, as well as sorting, union, merge, and zip. An experimental
evaluation of our implementation in Thrill (Bingmann et al., 2016) confirms the
low overhead and high failure detection rate predicted by theoretical analysis
