    Electronic Collaboration Across Cultures in a Web-based Project for English Writing Instruction

    The paper highlights the importance of experimentation and an innovative approach to English language writing instruction with the help of information communication technology (ICT or IT). First, it describes the local situation of English language teaching at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Then, it summarizes the development of IT proficiency and student-led collaborative learning groups at CUHK. Third, it reports on an International Web-based writing project involving six collaborating schools in different parts of the world including China, the United States, Indonesia, and Hong Kong in the year 1999-2000. In the report, the author-presenter will share with the audience a new ELT course development titled "English Online: Writing on the Web." He will explain the course objectives, the background of participating classes, the Web Course Tools (WebCT), the design of the project, the evaluation of course effectiveness and the outcome of the new curricular initiative. Finally, the paper presents a summary of a practical guide to electronic collaboration and some of the lessons the writer has learnt in five years\u27 experience of participant-observation in English teaching practice using the Web

    The Profiles of Software Pirates among Tertiary Institutions in Singapore

    The study seeks to examine the perception of software piracy as well as to discover its underlying factors among Singapore’s three university communities. Some five hundred responses were gathered from students and staff. By means of cluster analysis and factor analysis, the results identify three clusters of pirate profiles as influenced by factors such as attitudes towards software publishers, general acceptance, convenience, and ethics. The decision tree method links each pirate profile to demographic and computer-related variables. It shows that while age is negatively related to software piracy, computer experience and computer usage demonstrates an ambiguous relationship to software piracy respectively. Further, the undergraduate students tend to be pirates more often than university employees, and the Malays tend to be less frequent pirates as compared to other races. It is hoped that the study will help the relevant policy makers to develop better strategies to protect and to enforce the intellectual property rights among the universities as well as in an increasingly knowledge-based economy such as Singapore.Software Piracy; Software Policy; Protection and Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights; Cluster Analysis; Factor Analysis.

    Determinants of medication adherence to antihypertensive medications among a Chinese population using Morisky medication adherence scale

    <b>Background and objectives</b> Poor adherence to medications is one of the major public health challenges. Only one-third of the population reported successful control of blood pressure, mostly caused by poor drug adherence. However, there are relatively few reports studying the adherence levels and their associated factors among Chinese patients. This study aimed to study the adherence profiles and the factors associated with antihypertensive drug adherence among Chinese patients.<p></p> <b>Methods</b> A cross-sectional study was conducted in an outpatient clinic located in the New Territories Region of Hong Kong. Adult patients who were currently taking at least one antihypertensive drug were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire, consisting of basic socio-demographic profile, self-perceived health status, and self-reported medication adherence. The outcome measure was the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Good adherence was defined as MMAS scores greater than 6 points (out of a total score of 8 points).<p></p> <b>Results</b> From 1114 patients, 725 (65.1%) had good adherence to antihypertensive agents. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted. Younger age, shorter duration of antihypertensive agents used, job status being employed, and poor or very poor self-perceived health status were negatively associated with drug adherence.<p></p> <b>Conclusion</b> This study reported a high proportion of poor medication adherence among hypertensive subjects. Patients with factors associated with poor adherence should be more closely monitored to optimize their drug taking behavior

    Assessing the effectiveness of the programme, Higher Diploma in Computer Studies offered by the City University of Hong Kong : an application of the 'CIPP' evaluation model

    This study evaluated the programme Higher Diploma in Computer Studies offered by the City University of Hong Kong. The evaluation aims to ascertain the effectiveness of the programme curriculum in accordance with the industry needs and requirements. This is a descriptive study, which utilizes Stufflebeam's (1971) context, input, process, and product (CIPP) evaluation model. Context evaluation serves planning decisions by helping to determine what needs are to be addressed and by defining the objectives for an educational programme. Input evaluation serves structuring decisions by helping to determine what resources are available and what alternative strategies for the programme should be considered. Process evaluation serves implementing decisions by determining how well the plan is being implemented and identifying possible revisions needed. Product evaluation serves recycling decisions by determining the results that were obtained, both intended and unintended and assessing how well the initially identified needs have been met. Questionnaires were developed to obtain information needed for the four types of evaluations from stakeholders of the programme. They were the employers of the programme graduates, the programme graduates, the current students, and the teachers of the programme. The findings from this study revealed that the programme is still in great demand in the Hong Kong Society, the programme is producing the right kind of graduate for the job market, and the programme objectives have been met accordingly. This study has also identified some operational aspects needing improvement. The programme should not position itself as a terminal qualification, but some form of bridging programme should be developed to allow graduates to further pursue a degree level qualification

    Framework to Enhance Teaching and Learning in System Analysis and Unified Modelling Language

    Cowling, MA ORCiD: 0000-0003-1444-1563; Munoz Carpio, JC ORCiD: 0000-0003-0251-5510Systems Analysis modelling is considered foundational for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) students, with introductory and advanced units included in nearly all ICT and computer science degrees. Yet despite this, novice systems analysts (learners) find modelling and systems thinking quite difficult to learn and master. This makes the process of teaching the fundamentals frustrating and time intensive. This paper will discuss the foundational problems that learners face when learning Systems Analysis modelling. Through a systematic literature review, a framework will be proposed based on the key problems that novice learners experience. In this proposed framework, a sequence of activities has been developed to facilitate understanding of the requirements, solutions and incremental modelling. An example is provided illustrating how the framework could be used to incorporate visualization and gaming elements into a Systems Analysis classroom; therefore, improving motivation and learning. Through this work, a greater understanding of the approach to teaching modelling within the computer science classroom will be provided, as well as a framework to guide future teaching activities
