University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2016The Electroacoustic pieces; Temazcal (1984), by Javier Alvarez (b.1956), and Memory Palace (2012) by Christopher Cerrone (b.1984), each employ different types of electronic technologies in their realization through performance. This paper will discuss the origin and history of the technology applied respectively in the works. I will examine the role of percussion within the works, specifically in regards to learning and problem solving through technological challenges in order to effectively perform the compositions. By looking at Temazcal and Memory Palace through the context of their historical significance as electroacoustic works, the inherent functionality of the technology employed in each, and the resultant performance practices that have subsequently developed, a greater musical appreciation and understanding of electroacoustic works, in general, is possible

    Analyzing Visual Mappings of Traditional and Alternative Music Notation

    In this paper, we postulate that combining the domains of information visualization and music studies paves the ground for a more structured analysis of the design space of music notation, enabling the creation of alternative music notations that are tailored to different users and their tasks. Hence, we discuss the instantiation of a design and visualization pipeline for music notation that follows a structured approach, based on the fundamental concepts of information and data visualization. This enables practitioners and researchers of digital humanities and information visualization, alike, to conceptualize, create, and analyze novel music notation methods. Based on the analysis of relevant stakeholders and their usage of music notation as a mean of communication, we identify a set of relevant features typically encoded in different annotations and encodings, as used by interpreters, performers, and readers of music. We analyze the visual mappings of musical dimensions for varying notation methods to highlight gaps and frequent usages of encodings, visual channels, and Gestalt laws. This detailed analysis leads us to the conclusion that such an under-researched area in information visualization holds the potential for fundamental research.     From Pythagoras to Johann Sebastian Bach: An Exploration in the Development of Temperament and Tuning

    Temperament and tuning are at the core of all music—they are the embodiment of the correlation of music and mathematics in every musical work. In examining the shift from Pythagorean tuning to well temperament, compositional style and philosophy governs not only the evolution musical genres, but also the evolution of temperament and tuning systems. The association of mathematics and temperament defines ratios and pitch relations in every branch of temperament. An analysis of J.S. Bach\u27s Well-Tempered Clavier and his use of temperament display the contrast of melodious thirds of meantone temperament and emotional tension of chords in well temperament. The mathematical beauty and complexity of tuning governs the musical center of the work; a composition may focus upon minute intervallic relationships or larger harmonic structure, depending upon the primary focus of the utilized system of temperament. Arguably, mathematical relationships have more influence upon musical beauty than the composed music alone. J.S. Bach\u27s preludes and fugues of the Well-Tempered Clavier prove the existence of liveliness and color in every possible key

    An Introduction to Interactive Music for Percussion and Computers

    Composers began combining acoustic performers with electronically produced sounds in the early twentieth century. As computer-processing power increased the potential for significant musical communication was developed. Despite the body of research concerning electronic music, performing a composition with a computer partner remains intimidating for performers. The purpose of this paper is to provide an introductory method for interacting with a computer. This document will first follow the parallel evolution of percussion and electronics in order to reveal how each medium was influenced by the other. The following section will define interaction and explain how this is applied to musical communication between humans and computers. The next section introduces specific techniques used to cultivate human-computer interaction. The roles of performer, instrument, composer and conductor will then be defined as they apply to the human performer and the computer. If performers are aware of these roles they will develop richer communication that can enhance the performer's and audience member's recognition of human-computer interaction. In the final section, works for percussion and computer will be analyzed to reveal varying levels of interaction and the shifting roles of the performer. Three compositions will illustrate this point, 120bpm from neither Anvil nor Pulley by Dan Trueman, It's Like the Nothing Never Was by Von Hansen, and Music for Snare Drum and Computer by Cort Lippe. These three pieces develop a continuum of increasing interaction, moving from interaction within a fully defined score, to improvisation with digital synthesis, to the manipulation of computerized compositional algorithms using performer input. The unique ways each composer creates interaction will expose the vast possibilities for performing with interactive music systems

    The Presence of Groove in Online Songwriting Projects

    Collaboration for groups with members who are disconnected by geography or time is convenient for many reasons, but remains a challenge due to time zone differences, network congestion, and the attenuation of nonverbal communication cues. Virtual collaborators engaging in creative work often deal with these challenges, even more so when tasked with expressing their emotions to distant partners. This study seeks to determine the social factors and tools that impact the quality of an online creative collaboration. Members of the Kompoz.com music composition community were surveyed to solicit projects that had the potential to be optimal collaborations. Judges listened to these songs and measured how much each song prompted them to move. This measure, called groove, was used as an indication of a successful collaboration. Judges assisted in selecting one case that was an exemplar of groove, and another that urged them to move much less, to stand as an exemplar of diminished groove. The comparative case method was used to compare and contrast the tools, social practices, and skills employed in each project, and offers guidelines for the design of and participation in online creative communities

    With the emergence of modern mobile devices equipped with various types of built-in sensors, interactive art has become easily accessible to everyone, musicians and non-musicians alike. These efficient computers are able to analyze human activity, location, gesture, etc., and based on this information dynamically change, or create an artwork in realtime. This thesis presents an interactive mobile system that solely uses the standard embedded sensors available in current typical smart devices such as phones, and tablets to create an audio-only augmented reality for a singled out public space in order to explore the potential for social-musical interaction, without the need for any significant external infrastructure

    Reworking musical strategies in the digital age

    This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University, 2/2/2011.This thesis comprises a portfolio of creative musical work and a written commentary. The creative work seeks to rework musical strategies through technology by challenging aspects of how music is traditionally performed, composed and presented. The portfolio of submitted work is divided into five main projects. The first project is E-tudes, a set of four compositions for live electronics and six keyboard players. The second project is a composition called On Violence, for piano, live electronics, sensors and computer display. The third project is Zizek!?, a computer-mediated-performance for three improvisers that serves as an alternative soundtrack to a documentary about Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek. The fourth project is a collection of small experimental pieces for fixed media called FreuPinta. The fifth project consists of a selection of different improvisations that I devised or participated in using a computer environment I developed for live improvisation. Throughout the portfolio recent technological advancements are considered not for their use in implementing pre-existing models of music-making but rather for their potential to challenge preconceived notions about music. The written commentary gives the theoretical tools necessary to understand the underlying reasoning, preoccupations and concerns behind the submitted work as well as providing supplementary information about the musical results and the computer programmes developed as part of this research.Financial support from the Overseas Research Scheme (ORS), Brunel University School of Arts and the PRS for Music Foundation was used for this study

    Exciting Instrumental Data: Toward an Expanded Action-Oriented Ontology for Digital Music Performance

    Musical performance using digital musical instruments has obfuscated the relationship between observable musical gestures and the resultant sound. This is due to the sound producing mechanisms of digital musical instruments being hidden within the digital music making system. The difficulty in observing embodied artistic expression is especially true for musical instruments that are comprised of digital components only. Despite this characteristic of digital music performance practice, this thesis argues that it is possible to bring digital musical performance further within our action-oriented ontology by understanding the digital musician through the lens of LĂ©vi-Strauss’ notion of the bricoleur. Furthermore, by examining musical gestures with these instruments through a multi-tiered analytical framework that accounts for the physical computing elements necessarily present in all digital music making systems, we can further understand and appreciate the intricacies of digital music performance practice and culture

    Perspectives on Gerhard expands several papers given at the 2nd and 3rd International Roberto Gerhard Conferences in 2012 and 2013. The book focuses on two aspects of Gerhard. Firstly, the pre-1939 period in which he was a student of Schoenberg and then, on returning to Catalonia, began to establish a reputation as a composer. Secondly, and more generally on the composer's stylistic and aesthetic evolution. This latter focus includes both Gerhard's approach to serialism both harmonically and melodically as well as the pivotal role the USA was to play in his later life.
