    Automatic compositional verification of timed systems

    Specification and verification of real-time systems are important research topics with crucial applications; however, the so-called state space explosion problem often prevents model checking to be used in practice for large systems. In this work, we present a self-contained toolkit to analyze real-time systems specified using event-recording automata (ERAs), which supports system modeling, animated simulation, and fully automatic compositional verification based on learning techniques.     Effortless Fault Localisation:Conformance Testing of Real-Time Systems in Ecdar

    Model checking of real-time systems has evolved throughout the years. Recently, the model checker Ecdar, using timed I/O automata, was used to perform compositional verification. However, in order to fully integrate model checking of real-time systems into industrial development, we need a productive and reliable way to test if such a system conforms to its corresponding model. Hence, we present an extension of Ecdar that integrates conformance testing into a new IDE that now features modelling, verification, and testing. The new tool uses model-based mutation testing, requiring only the model and the system under test, to locate faults and to prove the absence of certain types of faults. It supports testing using either real-time or simulated time. It parallelises test-case generation and test execution to provide a significant speed-up. We also introduce new mutation operators that improve the ability to detect and locate faults. Finally, we conduct a case study with 140 faulty systems, where Ecdar detects all faults.Comment: In Proceedings GandALF 2018, arXiv:1809.0241

    Process Algebraic Approach to the Schedulability Analysis and Workload Abstraction of Hierarchical Real-Time Systems

    Real-time embedded systems have increased in complexity. As microprocessors become more powerful, the software complexity of real-time embedded systems has increased steadily. The requirements for increased functionality and adaptability make the development of real-time embedded software complex and error-prone. Component-based design has been widely accepted as a compositional approach to facilitate the design of complex systems. It provides a means for decomposing a complex system into simpler subsystems and composing the subsystems in a hierarchical manner. A system composed of real-time subsystems with hierarchy is called a hierarchical real-time system This paper describes a process algebraic approach to schedulability analysis of hierarchical real-time systems. To facilitate modeling and analyzing hierarchical real-time systems, we conservatively extend an existing process algebraic theory based on ACSR-VP (Algebra of Communicating Shared Resources with Value-Passing) for the schedulability of real-time systems. We explain a method to model a resource model in ACSR-VP which may be partitioned for a subsystem. We also introduce schedulability relation to define the schedulability of hierarchical real-time systems and show that satisfaction checking of the relation is reducible to deadlock checking in ACSR-VP and can be done automatically by the tool support of ERSA (Verification, Execution and Rewrite System for ACSR).     Complexity of compositional model checking of computation tree logic on simple structures

    Temporal Logic Model Checking is one of the most potent tools for the veri.cation of .nite state systems. Computation Tree Logic (CTL) has gained popularity because unlike most other logics, CTL model checking of a single transition system can be achieved in polynomial time. However, in most real-life problems, specially in distributed and parallel systems, the system consist of a set of concurrent processes and the veri.cation problem translates to model check the composition of the component processes. Since explicit composition leads to state explosion, verifying the system without actually composing the components is attractive, even for possibly restrictive class of systems.We show that the problem of compositional CTL model checking is PSPACE complete for the class of systems composed of components that are tree-like transition structure and do not interact among themselves. For the simplest forms of existential and universal CTL formulas model checking turns out to be NP complete and coNP complete, respectively. The results hold for both synchronous and asynchronous composition

    Extensible Energy Planning Framework for Preemptive Tasks

    Cyber-physical systems (CSPs) are demanding energy-efficient design not only of hardware (HW), but also of software (SW). Dynamic Voltage and and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) and Dynamic Power Manage (DPM) are most popular techniques to improve the energy efficiency. However, contemporary complicated HW and SW designs requires more elaborate and sophisticated energy management and efficiency evaluation techniques. This paper is concerned about energy supply planning for real-time scheduling systems (units) of which tasks need to meet deadlines. This paper presents a modelbased compositional energy planning technique that computes a minimal ratio of processor frequency that preserves schedulability of independent and preemptive tasks. The minimal ratio of processor frequency can be used to plan the energy supply of real-time components. Our model-based technique is extensible by refining our model with additional features so that energy management techniques and their energy efficiency can be evaluated by model checking techniques. We exploit the compositional framework for hierarchical scheduling systems and provide a new resource model for the frequency computation. As results, our use-case for avionics software components shows that our new method outperforms the classical real-time calculus (RTC) method, requiring 36.21% less frequency ratio on average for scheduling units under RM than the RTC method

    On the analysis of stochastic timed systems

    The formal methods approach to develop reliable and efficient safety- or performance-critical systems is to construct mathematically precise models of such systems on which properties of interest, such as safety guarantees or performance requirements, can be verified automatically. In this thesis, we present techniques that extend the reach of exhaustive and statistical model checking to verify reachability and reward-based properties of compositional behavioural models that support quantitative aspects such as real time and randomised decisions. We present two techniques that allow sound statistical model checking for the nondeterministic-randomised model of Markov decision processes. We investigate the relationship between two different definitions of the model of probabilistic timed automata, as well as potential ways to apply statistical model checking. Stochastic timed automata allow nondeterministic choices as well as nondeterministic and stochastic delays, and we present the first exhaustive model checking algorithm that allows their analysis. All the approaches introduced in this thesis are implemented as part of the Modest Toolset, which supports the construction and verification of models specified in the formal modelling language Modest. We conclude by applying this language and toolset to study novel distributed control strategies for photovoltaic microgenerators

    A Compositional Approach for Schedulability Analysis of Distributed Avionics Systems

    This work presents a compositional approach for schedulability analysis of Distributed Integrated Modular Avionics (DIMA) systems that consist of spatially distributed ARINC-653 modules connected by a unified AFDX network. We model a DIMA system as a set of stopwatch automata in UPPAAL to verify its schedulability by model checking. However, direct model checking is infeasible due to the large state space. Therefore, we introduce the compositional analysis that checks each partition including its communication environment individually. Based on a notion of message interfaces, a number of message sender automata are built to model the environment for a partition. We define a timed selection simulation relation, which supports the construction of composite message interfaces. By using assume-guarantee reasoning, we ensure that each task meets the deadline and that communication constraints are also fulfilled globally.     Assume-guarantee verification for probabilistic systems

    We present a compositional verification technique for systems that exhibit both probabilistic and nondeterministic behaviour. We adopt an assume- guarantee approach to verification, where both the assumptions made about system components and the guarantees that they provide are regular safety properties, represented by finite automata. Unlike previous proposals for assume-guarantee reasoning about probabilistic systems, our approach does not require that components interact in a fully synchronous fashion. In addition, the compositional verification method is efficient and fully automated, based on a reduction to the problem of multi-objective probabilistic model checking. We present asymmetric and circular assume-guarantee rules, and show how they can be adapted to form quantitative queries, yielding lower and upper bounds on the actual probabilities that a property is satisfied. Our techniques have been implemented and applied to several large case studies, including instances where conventional probabilistic verification is infeasible
