Transforming Internal Activities of Business Process Models to Services Compositions
As a service composition language, BPEL imposes as constraint that a business process model should consist only of activities for interacting with other business processes. BPEL provides limited support for implementing internal activities, i.e. activities that are performed by a single business process without involvement of other business processes. BPEL is hence not suitable to implement internal activities that include complex data manipulation. There are a number of options to make BPEL able to implement such internal activities. In this paper we analyse those options based on their feasibility, efficiency, reusability, portability and merging. The analysis indicates that delegating internal activities’ functionality to other services is the best option. We therefore present an approach for transforming internal activities to service invocations. The application of this approach on a business process model results in a service composition model that consists only of activities for interaction

On the Modeling of Correct Service Flows with BPEL4WS
Frameworks for composing Web Services offer a promising approach for realizing enterprise-wide and cross-organizational business applications. With BPEL4WS a powerful composition language exists. BPEL implementations allow orchestrating complex, stateful interactions among Web Services in a process-oriented way. One important task in this context is to ensure that respective flow specifications can be correctly processed, i.e., there will be no bad surprises (e.g., deadlocks, invocation of service operations with missing input data) at runtime. In this paper we subdivide BPEL schemes into different classes and discuss to which extent instances of these classes can be analyzed for the absence of control flow errors and inconsistencies. Altogether our work shall contribute to a more systematic evolution of the BPEL standard instead of overloading it with too many features
The foundational legacy of ASL
Abstract. We recall the kernel algebraic specification language ASL and outline its main features in the context of the state of research on algebraic specification at the time it was conceived in the early 1980s. We discuss the most significant new ideas in ASL and the influence they had on subsequent developments in the field and on our own work in particular.
Data integration through service-based mediation for web-enabled information systems
The Web and its underlying platform technologies have often been used to integrate existing software and information systems. Traditional techniques for data representation and transformations between documents are not sufficient to support a flexible and maintainable data integration solution that meets the requirements of modern complex Web-enabled software and information systems. arises from the high degree of complexity of data structures, for example in business and technology applications, and from the constant change of data and its
representation. In the Web context, where the Web platform is used to integrate different organisations or software systems, additionally the problem of heterogeneity
arises. We introduce a specific data integration solution for Web applications such as Web-enabled information systems. Our contribution is an integration technology
framework for Web-enabled information systems comprising, firstly, a data integration technique based on the declarative specification of transformation rules and the construction of connectors that handle the integration and, secondly, a mediator architecture based on information services and the constructed connectors to handle the integration process
An Algebra of Hierarchical Graphs
We define an algebraic theory of hierarchical graphs, whose axioms characterise graph isomorphism: two terms are equated exactly when they represent the same graph. Our algebra can be understood as a high-level language for describing graphs with a node-sharing, embedding structure, and it is then well suited for defining graphical representations of software models where nesting and linking are key aspects
Aligning a Service Provisioning Model of a Service-Oriented System with the ITIL v.3 Life Cycle
Bringing together the ICT and the business layer of a service-oriented system
(SoS) remains a great challenge. Few papers tackle the management of SoS from
the business and organizational point of view. One solution is to use the
well-known ITIL v.3 framework. The latter enables to transform the organization
into a service-oriented organizational which focuses on the value provided to
the service customers. In this paper, we align the steps of the service
provisioning model with the ITIL v.3 processes. The alignment proposed should
help organizations and IT teams to integrate their ICT layer, represented by
the SoS, and their business layer, represented by ITIL v.3. One main advantage
of this combined use of ITIL and a SoS is the full service orientation of the

Compositionality for Quantitative Specifications
We provide a framework for compositional and iterative design and
verification of systems with quantitative information, such as rewards, time or
energy. It is based on disjunctive modal transition systems where we allow
actions to bear various types of quantitative information. Throughout the
design process the actions can be further refined and the information made more
precise. We show how to compute the results of standard operations on the
systems, including the quotient (residual), which has not been previously
considered for quantitative non-deterministic systems. Our quantitative
framework has close connections to the modal nu-calculus and is compositional
with respect to general notions of distances between systems and the standard
operations

Architectural Design Rewriting (ADR) is an approach for the design of software architectures developed within Sensoria by reconciling graph transformation and process calculi techniques.
