Enterprise integration strategies across virtual extended enterprise networks : a case study of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Program enterprise

Increasingly, integration efforts have moved beyond the boundaries of the core or focal enterprise serving as the prime contractor or system integrator to span the entire value chain, to form virtual extended enterprises. These structures allow the members of the virtual extended enterprise to focus on their core competencies in order to collaboratively deliver a world-class product at a competitive price. While integration offers many benefits to enterprises, a high degree of integration is not always desirable or advantageous in a limited duration virtual extended enterprise composed of autonomous companies. Virtual extended enterprises must find a balance between decoupled collaboration and highly coupled integration, balancing the need to closely coordinate their efforts with the need protect the autonomy of their members. The objective of this research is to explore the extent to which a focal enterprise, such as a prime contractor or system integrator, should consider integration across its virtual extended enterprise, identify major barriers to integration, and define key enablers of integration overcoming these barriers.(cont.) Analysis focuses on the extent of integration based on the characteristics of the virtual extended enterprise, such as the duration and scope of the program in question, product system architecture, the organizational architecture, and the external environment. In particular, three key conceptual dimensions of integration are developed and explored-technological integration, strategic integration, and organizational integration. This framework is applied in an in-depth case study of integration strategies on the virtual extended enterprise of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Program. Aligning enterprise risk management with business strategy and information systems
Business leaders recognise effective risk management as one of the main success drivers for enterprises. Even though the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) concept has evolved significantly in the past years, in the aftermath of recent economic crises it became evident some of its critical challenges still need to be addressed. The review of subject literature led to a conclusion that current ERM approaches failed to protect enterprise value in turbulent and risky market conditions. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a conceptual analysis of the most common ERM practices and frameworks, in order to identify their shortcomings and areas requiring development. A âNew Approach ERM Modelâ is developed as guidance for a successful alignment of ERM with enterprise business strategy, and for an effective adaption of Information Systems to requirements of ERM programmes. The âNew Approach ERM Modelâ steers risk management initiatives and strategies in the same direction, and consequently allows enterprises to improve organisational effectiveness, increase shareholders value, and gain competitive advantage in the market
Beyond enterprise resource planning projects: innovative strategies for competitive advantage
ABSTRACT A rapidly changing business environment and legacy IT problems has resulted in many organisations implementing standard package solutions. This 'common systems' approach establishes a common IT and business process infrastructure within organisations and its increasing dominance raises several important strategic issues. These are to what extent do common systems impose common business processes and management systems on competing firms, and what is the source of competitive advantage if the majority of firms employ almost identical information systems and business processes? A theoretical framework based on research into legacy systems and earlier IT strategy literature is used to analyse three case studies in the manufacturing, chemical and IT industries. It is shown that the organisations are treating common systems as the core of their organisations' abilities to manage business transactions. To achieve competitive advantage they are clothing these common systems with information systems designed to capture information about competitors, customers and suppliers, and to provide a basis for sharing knowledge within the organisation and ultimately with economic partners. The importance of these approaches to other organisations and industries is analysed and an attempt is made at outlining the strategic options open to firms beyond the implementation of common business systems
Construction informatics in Turkey: strategic role of ICT and future research directions
Construction Informatics deals with subjects ranging from strategic management of ICTs to interoperability and information integration in the construction industry. Studies on defining research directions for Construction Informatics have a history over 20 years. The recent studies in the area highlight the priority themes for Construction Informatics research as interoperability, collaboration support, intelligent sites and knowledge sharing. In parallel, today it is widely accepted in the Architecture/Engineering/Construction (AEC) industry that ICT is becoming a strategic asset for any organisation to deliver business improvement and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. However, traditionally the AEC industry has approached investing in ICT with a lack of strategic focus and low level of priority to the business. This paper presents a recent study from Turkey that is focused on two themes. The first theme investigates the strategic role of ICT implementations from an industrial perspective, and explores if organisations within the AEC industry view ICT as a strategic resource for their business practice. The second theme investigates the âperspective of academiaâ in terms of future research directions of Construction Informatics. The results of the industrial study indicates that ICT is seen as a value-adding resource, but a shift towards the recognition of the importance of ICT in terms of value adding in winning work and achieving strategic competitive advantage is observed. On the other hand, ICT Training is found to be the theme of highest priority from the academia point of view

Extending the enterprise: An evaluation of ERP and EAI technologies within a Case Study organisation
It is widely understood that both Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS), provide great benefits in improving the visibility of supply and value chains within and across organisational boundaries. Strategies and innovations in modern trade marketing
Purpose: The article is devoted to the critical analysis of existing theoretical and methodological approaches to determining the content and nature of sales marketing as a factor and element of companiesâ competitive strategy. Design/Methodology/Approach: Based on a critical retrospective analysis, authors presented the features of the trade marketing toolkit providing substantial increase in market sales. Authors considered key existing functional marketing strategies, as well as its innovative trends and ideas. Findings: The modern market of trade enterprises is characterized by fundamental changes in economic conditions caused by the transformation of the economic system, the market priority of consumers, the formation of the information society, and the integration of economic processes. The economic phenomena escalate the struggle in the trading business for its share of the competitive market. In order to maintain and strengthen their positions, trade enterprises should build their trade and technological processes more and more efficiently. Practical implications: Economic growth of a commercial enterprise could be carried out in line with intensive and extensive factors. With the growing level of concentration of the trade industry, factors of intensive economic growth of trade enterprises become relevant. Originality/Value: The author's approach could be used in the development of promising corporate marketing strategies in terms of the development and implementation of innovative marketing solutions available for implementation throughout the entire cycle of the strategic marketing process.peer-reviewe
