    Comparison of State and Parameter Estimators for Electric Vehicle Batteries

    A Battery Management System (BMS) is needed to ensure a safe and effective operation of a Lithium-ion battery, especially in electric vehicle applications. An important function of a BMS is the reliable estimation of the battery state in a wide range of operating conditions. To this end, a BMS often uses an equivalent electrical model of the battery. Such a model is computationally affordable and can reproduce the battery behaviour in an accurate way, assuming that the model parameters are updated with the actual operating condition of the battery, namely its state-of-charge, temperature and ageing state. This paper compares the performance of two battery state and parameter estimation techniques, i.e., the Extended Kalman Filter and the classic Least Squares method in combination with the Mix algorithm. Compared to previous ones, this work focuses on the concurrent estimation of battery state and parameters using experimental data, measured on a Lithium-ion cell subject to a current profile significant for an electric vehicle application

    Accuracy versus simplicity in online battery model identification

    This paper presents a framework for battery modeling in online, real-time applications where accuracy is important but speed is the key. The framework allows users to select model structures with the smallest number of parameters that is consistent with the accuracy requirements of the target application. The tradeoff between accuracy and speed in a battery model identification process is explored using different model structures and parameter-fitting algorithms. Pareto optimal sets are obtained, allowing a designer to select an appropriate compromise between accuracy and speed. In order to get a clearer understanding of the battery model identification problem, “identification surfaces” are presented. As an outcome of the battery identification surfaces, a new analytical solution is derived for battery model identification using a closed-form formula to obtain a battery’s ohmic resistance and open circuit voltage from measurement data. This analytical solution is used as a benchmark for comparison of other fitting algorithms and it is also used in its own right in a practical scenario for state-of-charge estimation. A simulation study is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework and the simulation results are verified by conducting experimental tests on a small NiMH battery pack

    Kalman-variant estimators for state of charge in lithium-sulfur batteries

    Lithium-sulfur batteries are now commercially available, offering high specific energy density, low production costs and high safety. However, there is no commercially-available battery management system for them, and there are no published methods for determining state of charge in situ. This paper describes a study to address this gap. The properties and behaviours of lithium-sulfur are briefly introduced, and the applicability of ‘standard’ lithium-ion state-of-charge estimation methods is explored. Open-circuit voltage methods and ‘Coulomb counting’ are found to have a poor fit for lithium-sulfur, and model-based methods, particularly recursive Bayesian filters, are identified as showing strong promise. Three recursive Bayesian filters are implemented: an extended Kalman filter (EKF), an unscented Kalman filter (UKF) and a particle filter (PF). These estimators are tested through practical experimentation, considering both a pulse-discharge test and a test based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Experimentation is carried out at a constant temperature, mirroring the environment expected in the authors' target automotive application. It is shown that the estimators, which are based on a relatively simple equivalent-circuit–network model, can deliver useful results. If the three estimators implemented, the unscented Kalman filter gives the most robust and accurate performance, with an acceptable computational effort

    Observer techniques for estimating the state-of-charge and state-of-health of VRLABs for hybrid electric vehicles

    The paper describes the application of observer-based state-estimation techniques for the real-time prediction of state-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH) of lead-acid cells. Specifically, an approach based on the well-known Kalman filter, is employed, to estimate SoC, and the subsequent use of the EKF to accommodate model non-linearities to predict battery SoH. The underlying dynamic behaviour of each cell is based on a generic Randles' equivalent circuit comprising of two-capacitors (bulk and surface) and three resistors, (terminal, transfer and self-discharging). The presented techniques are shown to correct for offset, drift and long-term state divergence-an unfortunate feature of employing stand-alone models and more traditional coulomb-counting techniques. Measurements using real-time road data are used to compare the performance of conventional integration-based methods for estimating SoC, with those predicted from the presented state estimation schemes. Results show that the proposed methodologies are superior with SoC being estimated to be within 1% of measured. Moreover, by accounting for the nonlinearities present within the dynamic cell model, the application of an EKF is shown to provide verifiable indications of SoH of the cell pack

    Hardware-in-the-Loop Platform for Assessing Battery State Estimators in Electric Vehicles

    The development of new algorithms for the management and state estimation of lithiumion batteries requires their verification and performance assessment using different approaches and tools. This paper aims at presenting an advanced hardware in the loop platform which uses an accurate model of the battery to test the functionalities of battery management systems (BMSs) in electric vehicles. The developed platform sends the simulated battery data directly to the BMS under test via a communication link, ensuring the safety of the tests. As a case study, the platform has been used to test two promising battery state estimators, the Adaptive Mix Algorithm and the Dual Extended Kalman Filter, implemented on a field-programmable gate array based BMS. Results show the importance of the assessment of these algorithms under different load profiles and conditions of the battery, thus highlighting the capabilities of the proposed platform to simulate many different situations in which the estimators will work in the target application

In this research work we share from the experience accumulated in control systems applications field some preliminary results, especially in modeling and state estimation techniques, very useful for state-of-charge estimation of the rechargeable batteries with different chemistries. We investigate the design and the effectiveness of three nonlinear state-of-charge estimators implemented in a real-time MATLAB environment for a particular Li-Ion battery, such as an Unscented Kalman Filter, Particle filter, and a nonlinear observer.     Edge computing for vehicle battery management:Cloud-based online state estimation

    The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), including battery EVs and hybrid EVs, makes it possible to reduce fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emission. However, an accurate battery model and an effective battery management system should be established to enable this benefit. This paper proposes a novel cloud-assisted online battery management method based on artificial intelligence and edge computing technologies. Integration of cloud computation and big data resources into real-time vehicle battery management is realized by establishing a novel cloud-edge battery management system (CEBMS). A deep learning algorithm-based cloud data mining and battery modeling method is developed to estimate the voltage and energy state of the battery. The accuracy of the established cloud battery model outperforms the onboard battery management system by utilizing multi-sources information from different EVs. Meanwhile, a cloud-assisted battery management method is established at edge nodes in the onboard battery management unit to realize real-time state estimation locally. By using precise battery state estimation provided by the cloud platform, vehicle battery model accuracy can be significantly improved. The performance of the proposed battery management method is verified by a vehicle big data platform and battery pack experimental test bench. Experimental results justify the effectiveness of the proposed method in battery state estimation, which can help the EVs use and manage the battery more effectively.</p

    Hardware-in-the-loop simulation of FPGA-based state estimators for electric vehicle batteries

    This paper describes a hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation platform specifically designed to test state estimators for Li-ion batteries in electric vehicle applications. Two promising estimators, the Mix algorithm combined with the moving window least squares and the dual extended Kalman filter, are implemented in hardware on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and evaluated using the developed HiL platform. The simulation results show the effectiveness of using FPGAs for hardware acceleration of battery state estimators and the importance of their assessment under different operating conditions, i.e., driving schedules, which can be simulated by the HiL platform
