    DevOps: Concepts, Practices, Tools, Benefits and Challenges

    DevOps, originated in the context of agile software development, seems an appropriate approach to enable the continuous delivery and deployment of working software in small releases. Organizations are taking significant interest in adopting DevOps ways of working. The interest is there, however the challenge is how to effectively adopt DevOps in practice? Before disembarking on the journey of DevOps, there is a need to clearly understand the DevOps concepts, practice, tools, benefits and underlying challenges. Thus, in order to address the research question in hand, this paper adopts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach to identify, review and synthesize the relevant studies published in public domain between: 2010-2016. SLR approach was applied to initially identify a set of 450 papers. Finally, 30 of 450 relevant papers were selected and reviewed to identify the eight key DevOps concepts, twenty practices, and a twelve categories tools. The research also identified seventeen benefits of using DevOps approach for application development and encountered four known challenges. The results of this review will serve as a knowledge base for researchers and practitioners, which can be used to effectively understand and establish the integrated DevOps capability in the local context

    DevOps Ontology - An ontology to support the understanding of DevOps in the academy and the software industry

    Currently, the degree of knowledge about what DevOps really means and what it entails is still limited. This can result in an informal and even incorrect implementation in many cases. Although several proposals related to DevOps adoption can be found, confusion is not uncommon and terminology conflict between the proposals is still evident. This article proposes DevOps Ontology, a semi-formal ontology that proposes a generic, consistent, and clear language to enable the dissemination of information related to implementing DevOps in software development. The ontology presented in this article facilitates the understanding of DevOps by identifying the relationships between software process elements and the agile principles/values that may be related to them. The DevOps Ontology has been defined considering the following aspects: the REFSENO formalism that uses the representation in UML was used and the language OWL language using Prótegé and HermiT Reasoner to evaluate the consistency of its structure. Likewise, it was satisfactorily evaluated in three application cases: a theoretical validation; instantiation of the continuous integration and deployment practices proposed by the company GitLab. Furthermore, a mobile app was created to retrieve information from the DevOps Ontology using the SPARQL protocol and RDF language. The app also evaluated the Ontology’s proficiency in responding to knowledge-based questions using SPARQL. The results showed that DevOps Ontology is consistent, complete, and concise, i.e.: to say: the consistency could be observed in the ability to be able to infer knowledge from the ontology, ensuring that the ontology is complete by checking for any incompleteness and verifying that all necessary definitions and inferences are well-established. Additionally, the ontology was assessed for conciseness to ensure that it doesn't contain redundant or unnecessary definitions. Furthermore, it has the potential for improvement by incorporating new concepts and relationships as needed. The newly suggested ontology creates a set of terms that provide a systematic and structured approach to organizing the existing knowledge in the field. This helps to minimize the confusion, inconsistency, and heterogeneity of the terminologies and concepts in the area of interest

    DevOps has been established as a framework used by software development companies seeking to set mechanisms to automate their development processes. Consequently, over the last decade, many companies have adopted DevOps to support their project’s development process and perform continuous improvement tasks to ensure that it is applied correctly. To achieve this, companies are looking for solutions that allow them to evaluate the degree of implementation of DevOps in their internal processes. In this sense, the objective of this study focuses on identifying, through a systematic mapping of the literature, the mechanisms used to assess DevOps in software development companies. According to the above, the current state of knowledge related to the proposal of processes, models, techniques, tools, and methodological guides is presented to conduct the DevOps assessment. As a result, it is noted that there are multiple methodological solutions that seek to assess DevOps; however, a high degree of heterogeneity was evidenced in the identified solutions, resulting in the need to establish a clear framework that serves as the basis for proposing a generic, structured, and unambiguous DevOps assessment model applicable to software companies

    Metrics Model to Complement the Evaluation of DevOps in Software Companies

    This article presents a model to complement the evaluation of DevOps in software companies. It was designed by harmonizing the elements of the DevOps process identified through a systematic mapping of the literature and aimed to know the state of the art of methodological solutions and tools to evaluate DevOps in the industry. The process elements were identified, compared, and integrated into a common process structure that was used to establish a total of 11 metrics using the Goal-Question-Metric approach. The model was evaluated by a focus group of expert DevOps professionals. They determined that the model is clear, easy to apply, and provides valuable information to companies to improve their DevOps practices

    An Analysis of Multi-domain Command and Control and the Development of Software Solutions through DevOps Toolsets and Practices

    Multi-Domain Command and Control (MDC2) is the exercise of command and control over forces in multiple operational domains (namely air, land, sea, space, and cyberspace) in order to produce synergistic effects in the battlespace, and enhancing this capability has become a major focus area for the United States Air Force (USAF). In order to meet demands for MDC2 software, solutions need to be acquired and/or developed in a timely manner, information technology infrastructure needs to be adaptable to new software requirements, and user feedback needs to drive iterative updates to fielded software. In commercial organizations, agile software development methodologies and concepts such as DevOps have been implemented to meet these demands. However, the USAF has been slow to adopt modern agile software development concepts such as DevOps in favor of traditional software development lifecycles and large contracts that can go nearly a decade without any value being released to the users. This work explores MDC2 software use cases and aims to show that MDC2 software can be successfully developed using modern agile software development practices in a timely manner

Therefore, the definitions of DevOps often are only a part relevant to the concept. When further observing DevOps, it could be seen as a movement, but is still young and not yet formally defined. Also, no adoption models or fine-grained maturity models showing what to consider to adopt DevOps and how to mature it were identified. As a consequence, this research attempted to fill these gaps and consequently brought forward a Systematic Literature Review to identify the determining factors contributing to the implementation of DevOps, including the main capabilities and areas with which it evolves. This resulted in a list of practices per area and capability that was used in the interviews with DevOps practitioners that, with their experience, contributed to define the maturity of those DevOps practices. This combination of factors was used to construct a DevOps maturity model showing the areas and capabilities to be taken into account in the adoption and maturation of DevOps.Hoje em dia, as empresas precisam de responder às necessidades dos clientes a uma velocidade sem precedentes. Impulsionadas por esta necessidade de velocidade, muitas empresas apressam-se para o movimento DevOps. O DevOps, a combinação de Desenvolvimento e Operações, é uma nova maneira de pensar no domínio da engenharia de software que recentemente recebeu muita atenção. Desde que o DevOps foi introduzido como um novo termo e um novo conceito, ainda não foi alcançado um entendimento comum do que significa. Portanto, as definições do DevOps geralmente são apenas uma parte relevante para o conceito. Ao observar o DevOps, o fenómeno aborda questões culturais e técnicas para obter uma produção mais rápida de software, tem um âmbito amplo e pode ser visto como um movimento, mas ainda é jovem e ainda não está formalmente definido. Além disso, não foram identificados modelos de adoção ou modelos de maturidade refinados que mostrem o que considerar para adotar o DevOps e como fazê-lo crescer. Como consequência, esta pesquisa tentou preencher essas lacunas e, consequentemente, apresentou uma Revisão sistemática da literatura para identificar os fatores determinantes que contribuem para a implementação de DevOps, incluindo os principais recursos e áreas com os quais ele evolui. Isto resultou numa lista de práticas por área e por capacidade, que foi utilizado como base nas entrevistas realizadas com peritos em DevOps que, com a sua experiência, ajudaram a atribuir níveis de maturidade a cada prática.
