    Raising awareness of the accessibility challenges in mathematics MOOCs

    MOOCs provide learning environments that make it easier for learners to study from anywhere, at their own pace and with open access to content. This has revolutionised the field of eLearning, but accessibility continues to be a problem, even more so if we include the complexity of the STEM disciplines which have their own specific characteristics. This work presents an analysis of the accessibility of several MOOC platforms which provide courses in mathematics. We attempt to visualise the main web accessibility problems and challenges that disabled learners could face in taking these types of courses, both in general and specifically in the context of the subject of mathematics

    Open educational resources (OER) and massive open online courses (MOOC) are new and emerging issues in the international higher education context. Under the exponential growth of the supply of courses and related publications, the purpose of this chapter is to foster scientific discussion on the socio-cultural and economic impacts, as well as its technological and pedagogical implications. Supported by the methodological typology of bibliographical studies, systematized interpretative-critical analysis based on review of the concepts, and principles guiding OER and MOOC, the authors' reflections show that the enlargement terminologies without epistemological delimitation have provoked theoretical and practical mistakes. In the final considerations, the authors systematize broader problematizations around the open educational practices in universities aimed to five dimensions: spatio-time-content, theoretical models, principles of pedagogical innovation, economic aspects, and fundamentals of collaborative culture.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    FORGE: An eLearning Framework for Remote Laboratory Experimentation on FIRE Testbed Infrastructure

    The Forging Online Education through FIRE (FORGE) initiative provides educators and learners in higher education with access to world-class FIRE testbed infrastructure. FORGE supports experimentally driven research in an eLearning environment by complementing traditional classroom and online courses with interactive remote laboratory experiments. The project has achieved its objectives by defining and implementing a framework called FORGEBox. This framework offers the methodology, environment, tools and resources to support the creation of HTML-based online educational material capable accessing virtualized and physical FIRE testbed infrastruc- ture easily. FORGEBox also captures valuable quantitative and qualitative learning analytic information using questionnaires and Learning Analytics that can help optimise and support student learning. To date, FORGE has produced courses covering a wide range of networking and communication domains. These are freely available from FORGEBox.eu and have resulted in over 24,000 experiments undertaken by more than 1,800 students across 10 countries worldwide. This work has shown that the use of remote high- performance testbed facilities for hands-on remote experimentation can have a valuable impact on the learning experience for both educators and learners. Additionally, certain challenges in developing FIRE-based courseware have been identified, which has led to a set of recommendations in order to support the use of FIRE facilities for teaching and learning purposes

Our concept this year reflects Burt Morgan's boundless sense of adventure, a drive that took him to all corners of the globe spreading the spirit of entrepreneurship. We enjoyed our own mind-expanding journey in 2014 exploring new frontiers in entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education. The wild ride of the past twelve months has taken us across the nation and at least virtually around the globe as we connected with entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial ecosystems in places distant from Northeast Ohio. Our regional ecosystem performed with gusto as students found record succuss in national venture competitions, our collegiate programs garnered wide recognition, the NEO ecosystem restructured for greater effectiveness, and JumpStart-mentored ventures experienced healthy exits. We enthusiastically welcomed Angela Kwallek Evans and Emily Bean to the Foundation as new program officers and express tremendous gratitude to former staff members Leslie Nelson and Alison Burner for their major contributions to the vitality of our grant portfolios.
