    A turbojet combustor and method for controlling nitric oxide emissions by employing successive combustion zones is described. After combustion of an initial portion of the fuel in a primary combustion zone, the combustion products of the primary zone are combined with the remaining portion of fuel and additional plenum air and burned in a secondary combustion zone under conditions that result in low nitric oxide emissions. Low nitric oxide emissions are achieved by a novel turbojet combustor arrangement which provides flame stability by allowing stable combustion to be accompanied by low nitric oxide emissions resulting from controlled fuel-lean combustion (ignited by the emission products from the primary zone) in a secondary combustion zone at a lower combustion temperature resulting in low emission of nitric oxide

    Numerical investigation of the heterogeneous combustion processes of solid fuels

    Two-phase computational modelling based on the Euler–Euler was developed to investigate the heterogeneous combustion processes of biomass, in the solid carbon phase, inside a newly designed combustion chamber (Model 1). A transient simulation was carried out for a small amount of carbon powder situated in a cup which was located at the centre of the combustion chamber. A heat source was provided to initiate the combustion with the air supplied by three injection nozzles. The results show that the combustion is sustained in the chamber, as evidenced by the flame temperature. An axisymmetric combustion model (Model 2) based on the Euler–Lagrange approach was formulated to model the combustion of pulverized coal. Three cases with three different char oxidation models are presented. The predicted results have good agreement with the available experimental data and showed that the combustion inside the reactor was affected by the particulate size. A number of simulations were carried out to find the best values of parameters suitable for predicting NOx pollutants

    Investigation of transition between spark ignition and controlled auto-ignition combustion in a V6 direct-injection engine with cam profile switching

    Controlled auto-ignition (CAI) combustion, also known as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) can be achieved by trapping residuals with early exhaust valve closure in a direct fuel injection in-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engines (through the employment of low-lift cam profiles). Due to the operating region being limited to low and mid-load operation for CAI combustion with a low-lift cam profile, it is important to be able to operate SI combustion at high-load with a normal cam profile. A 3.0L prototype engine was modified to achieve CAI combustion, using a Cam Profile Switching mechanism which has the capability to switch between high and low-lift cam-profiles. A strategy was used where a high-profile could be used for SI combustion and a low-lift profile was used for CAI combustion. Initial analysis showed that for transitioning from SI to CAI combustion, misfire occurred on the first CAI transitional cycle. Subsequent experiments showed that the throttle opening position and switching time could be controlled avoiding misfire. Further work investigated transitioning at different loads and from CAI to SI combustion

    Optical study of flow and combustion in an HCCI engine with negative valve overlap

    One of the most widely used methods to enable Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion is using negative valve overlapping to trap a sufficient quantity of hot residual gas. The characteristics of air motion with specially designed valve events having reduced valve lift and durations associated with HCCI engines and their effect on subsequent combustion are not yet fully understood. In addition, the ignition process and combustion development in such engines are very different from those in conventional spark-ignition or diesel compression ignition engines. Very little data has been reported concerning optical diagnostics of the flow and combustion in the engine using negative valve overlapping. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the in-cylinder flow characteristics and combustion development in an optical engine operating in HCCI combustion mode. PIV measurements have been taken under motored engine conditions to provide a quantitative flow characterisation of negative valve overlap in-cylinder flows. The ignition and combustion process was imaged using a high resolution charge coupled device (CCD) camera and the combustion imaging data was supplemented by simultaneously recorded in-cylinder pressure data which assisted the analysis of the images. It is found that the flow characteristics with negative valve overlapping are less stable and more valve event driven than typical spark ignition in-cylinder flows, while the combustion initiation locations are not uniformly distributed. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd

    A non-steady model for the combustion of ammonium perchlorate composite propellants has been developed in order to be incorporated into a comprehensive gasdynamics model of solid rocket motor flow fields. The model including the heterogeneous combustion and turbulence mechanisms is applied to nonlinear combustion instability analyses. This paper describes the essential mechanisms and features of the model and discusses the methodology of non-steady calculations of the combustion instabilities of solid rocket motors

    Pollutant Formation in Monodisperse Fuel Spray Combustion

    The combustion of liquid sprays represents an extremely important class of combustion processes. In the transition region, encompassing droplet sizes in the range of 25-80 micron diameter, the mixing and evaporation processes are both incomplete at the flame front and burning occurs in a combined diffusive and premixed fashion. Under these conditions, the relative importance of heterogeneous and homogeneous effects in dominating the combustion process is switched and gives rise to a number of interesting phenomena. NO (sub x) formation in monodisperse spray combustion was investigated with the following specific objectives: (1) to quantitatively determine the effect of droplet size, number density, etc. on NO sub x formation in monodisperse fuel spray combustion; and (2) to isolate the important physical and chemical phenomena in NO sub x formation in these combustion systems

The propellant actuated system includes an outer barrel, outer housing and a combustion chamber. A main piston is movable in the barrel housing when gas pressure is developed in the combustion chamber. A relief piston is concentrically mounted and fixedly movable with the main piston when gas pressure is exerted from the combustion. A relief piston has a force-activated separation mechanism for limiting the output force while simultaneously maintaining constant output pressure on the main piston from the combustion chamber

    Co-firing of biomass with coals Part 1. Thermogravimetric kinetic analysis of combustion of fir (abies bornmulleriana) wood

    The chemical composition and reactivity of fir (Abies bornmulleriana) wood under non-isothermal thermogravimetric (TG) conditions were studied. Oxidation of the wood sample at temperatures near 600 A degrees C caused the loss of aliphatics from the structure of the wood and created a char heavily containing C-O functionalities and of highly aromatic character. On-line FTIR recordings of the combustion of wood indicated the oxidation of carbonaceous and hydrogen content of the wood and release of some hydrocarbons due to pyrolysis reactions that occurred during combustion of the wood. TG analysis was used to study combustion of fir wood. Non-isothermal TG data were used to evaluate the kinetics of the combustion of this carbonaceous material. The article reports application of Ozawa-Flynn-Wall model to deal with non-isothermal TG data for the evaluation of the activation energy corresponding to the combustion of the fir wood. The average activation energy related to fir wood combustion was 128.9 kJ/mol, and the average reaction order for the combustion of wood was calculated as 0.30
