Experimental Demonstration of Staggered CAP Modulation for Low Bandwidth Red-Emitting Polymer-LED based Visible Light Communications
In this paper we experimentally demonstrate, for the first time, staggered
carrier-less amplitude and phase (sCAP) modulation for visible light
communication systems based on polymer light-emitting diodes emitting at ~639
nm. The key advantage offered by sCAP in comparison to conventional multiband
CAP is its full use of the available spectrum. In this work, we compare sCAP,
which utilises four orthogonal filters to generate the signal, with a
conventional 4-band multi-CAP system and on-off keying (OOK). We transmit each
modulation format with equal energy and present a record un-coded transmission
speed of ~6 Mb/s. This represents gains of 25% and 65% over the achievable rate
using 4-CAP and OOK, respectively.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, IEEE ICC 2019 conferenc
Coverage and Deployment Analysis of Narrowband Internet of Things in the Wild
Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is gaining momentum as a promising
technology for massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC). Given that its
deployment is rapidly progressing worldwide, measurement campaigns and
performance analyses are needed to better understand the system and move toward
its enhancement. With this aim, this paper presents a large scale measurement
campaign and empirical analysis of NB-IoT on operational networks, and
discloses valuable insights in terms of deployment strategies and radio
coverage performance. The reported results also serve as examples showing the
potential usage of the collected dataset, which we make open-source along with
a lightweight data visualization platform.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Communications Magazine (Internet of

Mandate-driven networking eco-system : a paradigm shift in end-to-end communications
The wireless industry is driven by key stakeholders that follow a holistic approach of "one-system-fits-all" that leads to moving network functionality of meeting stringent End-to-End (E2E) communication requirements towards the core and cloud infrastructures. This trend is limiting smaller and new players for bringing in new and novel solutions. For meeting these E2E requirements, tenants and end-users need to be active players for bringing their needs and innovations. Driving E2E communication not only in terms of quality of service (QoS) but also overall carbon footprint and spectrum efficiency from one specific community may lead to undesirable simplifications and a higher level of abstraction of other network segments may lead to sub-optimal operations. Based on this, the paper presents a paradigm shift that will enlarge the role of wireless innovation at academia, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME)'s, industries and start-ups while taking into account decentralized mandate-driven intelligence in E2E communications
Wearable Communications in 5G: Challenges and Enabling Technologies
As wearable devices become more ingrained in our daily lives, traditional
communication networks primarily designed for human being-oriented applications
are facing tremendous challenges. The upcoming 5G wireless system aims to
support unprecedented high capacity, low latency, and massive connectivity. In
this article, we evaluate key challenges in wearable communications. A
cloud/edge communication architecture that integrates the cloud radio access
network, software defined network, device to device communications, and
cloud/edge technologies is presented. Computation offloading enabled by this
multi-layer communications architecture can offload computation-excessive and
latency-stringent applications to nearby devices through device to device
communications or to nearby edge nodes through cellular or other wireless
technologies. Critical issues faced by wearable communications such as short
battery life, limited computing capability, and stringent latency can be
greatly alleviated by this cloud/edge architecture. Together with the presented
architecture, current transmission and networking technologies, including
non-orthogonal multiple access, mobile edge computing, and energy harvesting,
can greatly enhance the performance of wearable communication in terms of
spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, latency, and connectivity.Comment: This work has been accepted by IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazin
