Non-Parametric Causality Detection: An Application to Social Media and Financial Data
According to behavioral finance, stock market returns are influenced by
emotional, social and psychological factors. Several recent works support this
theory by providing evidence of correlation between stock market prices and
collective sentiment indexes measured using social media data. However, a pure
correlation analysis is not sufficient to prove that stock market returns are
influenced by such emotional factors since both stock market prices and
collective sentiment may be driven by a third unmeasured factor. Controlling
for factors that could influence the study by applying multivariate regression
models is challenging given the complexity of stock market data. False
assumptions about the linearity or non-linearity of the model and inaccuracies
on model specification may result in misleading conclusions.
In this work, we propose a novel framework for causal inference that does not
require any assumption about the statistical relationships among the variables
of the study and can effectively control a large number of factors. We apply
our method in order to estimate the causal impact that information posted in
social media may have on stock market returns of four big companies. Our
results indicate that social media data not only correlate with stock market

Predicting trend reversals using market instantaneous state
Collective behaviours taking place in financial markets reveal strongly
correlated states especially during a crisis period. A natural hypothesis is
that trend reversals are also driven by mutual influences between the different
stock exchanges. Using a maximum entropy approach, we find coordinated
behaviour during trend reversals dominated by the pairwise component. In
particular, these events are predicted with high significant accuracy by the
ensemble's instantaneous state.Comment: 18 pages, 15 figure
Inferring causal relations from multivariate time series : a fast method for large-scale gene expression data
Various multivariate time series analysis techniques have been developed with the aim of inferring causal relations between time series. Previously, these techniques have proved their effectiveness on economic and neurophysiological data, which normally consist of hundreds of samples. However, in their applications to gene regulatory inference, the small sample size of gene expression time series poses an obstacle. In this paper, we describe some of the most commonly used multivariate inference techniques and show the potential challenge related to gene expression analysis. In response, we propose a directed partial correlation (DPC) algorithm as an efficient and effective solution to causal/regulatory relations inference on small sample gene expression data. Comparative evaluations on the existing techniques and the proposed method are presented. To draw reliable conclusions, a comprehensive benchmarking on data sets of various setups is essential. Three experiments are designed to assess these methods in a coherent manner. Detailed analysis of experimental results not only reveals good accuracy of the proposed DPC method in large-scale prediction, but also gives much insight into all methods under evaluation
Effects of Training on Employee Suggestions and Promotions in an Internal Labor Market
We evaluate the effects of employer-provided formal training on employee suggestions for productivity improvements and on promotions among male blue-collar workers. More than twenty years of personnel data of four entry cohorts in a German company allow us to address issues such as unobserved heterogeneity and the length of potential training effects. Our main finding is that workers have larger probabilities to make suggestions and to be promoted after they have received formal training. The effect on suggestions is however only short term. Causal inference for social network data
We describe semiparametric estimation and inference for causal effects using
observational data from a single social network. Our asymptotic result is the
first to allow for dependence of each observation on a growing number of other
units as sample size increases. While previous methods have generally
implicitly focused on one of two possible sources of dependence among social
network observations, we allow for both dependence due to transmission of
information across network ties, and for dependence due to latent similarities
among nodes sharing ties. We describe estimation and inference for new causal
effects that are specifically of interest in social network settings, such as
interventions on network ties and network structure. Using our methods to
reanalyze the Framingham Heart Study data used in one of the most influential
and controversial causal analyses of social network data, we find that after
accounting for network structure there is no evidence for the causal effects
claimed in the original paper
