Online Collaborative Editor
âOnline collaborative editorâ is a node.js based browser application that provides real time collaborative editing of files and improves pair programming. Current real time editors fail to provide simultaneous viewing and editing of files within the server and results in a complex version controlling system. Such systems are also vulnerable to deadlocks and race conditions. This project provides a platform for real time collaborative editors, which can support simultaneous editing and viewing of files and handle concurrency problems by using locking mechanism. The experiment results showed that node.js platform provides good performance for collaborative editing
Scalable XML Collaborative Editing with Undo short paper
Commutative Replicated Data-Type (CRDT) is a new class of algorithms that
ensures scalable consistency of replicated data. It has been successfully
applied to collaborative editing of texts without complex concurrency control.
In this paper, we present a CRDT to edit XML data. Compared to existing
approaches for XML collaborative editing, our approach is more scalable and
handles all the XML editing aspects : elements, contents, attributes and undo.
Indeed, undo is recognized as an important feature for collaborative editing
that allows to overcome system complexity through error recovery or
collaborative conflict resolution
Research report : Collaborative Peer 2 Peer Edition: Avoiding Conflicts is Better than Solving Conflicts
Collaborative edition is achieved by distinct sites that work independently
on (a copy of) a shared document. Conflicts may arise during this process and
must be solved by the collaborative editor. In pure Peer to Peer collaborative
editing, no centralization nor locks nor time-stamps are used which make
conflict resolution difficult. We propose an algorithm which relies on the
notion or semantics dependence and avoids the need of any integration
transformation to solve conflicts. Furthermore, it doesn't use any history file
recording operations performed since starting the edition process. We show how
to define editing operations for semi-structured documents i.e. XML-like trees,
that are enriched with informations derived for free from the editing process.
Then we define the semantics dependence relation required by the algorithm and
we present preliminary results obtained by a prototype implementation.Comment: 12 page
RECOLED: A group-aware collaborative text editor for capturing document history
This paper presents a usability analysis of RECOLED, a shared document editor which supports recording of audio communication in remote collaborative writing sessions, and transparent monitoring of interactions, such as editing, gesturing and scrolling. The editor has been designed so that the collaboration results in the production of a multimedia document history which enriches the final product of the writing activity and can serve as a basis for post-meeting information retrieval. A discussion is presented on how post-meeting processing can highlight the usefulness of such histories in terms of tracking information that would be normally lost in usual collaborative editing settings
Supporting Distributed Coalition Planning with Semantic Wiki Technology
Contemporary and near-future military coalition environments present a number of challenges for military planning. Not only must military planners create plans against a backdrop of strict time constraints and uncertain information, they must also coordinate their planning efforts with other planning staff (often from different organizational, linguistic and cultural communities). This paper examines the potential for semantic wikis to support collaborative planning activities in the face of these challenges. Whilst we do not claim that semantic wikis could support all aspects of the collaborative planning process, we do suggest that semantic wikis can provide a highly configurable online editing environment which is likely to be of value in at least some coalition planning contexts. The strengths of semantic wikis include their support for distributed editing, their support for flexible forms of information presentation, and the opportunities they provide for new forms of inter-agent coordination. Their weaknesses include the absence of supportive plan editing interfaces and the limited support for the representation of highly expressive planning models. In the current paper, we discuss this profile of strengths and weaknesses, and we also discuss how a specific semantic wiki system, namely Semantic MediaWiki, could be used to support some aspects of collaborative planning

Collaborative editing of knowledge resources for cross-lingual text mining
The need to smoothly deal with textual documents expressed in different languages is increasingly becoming a relevant issue in modern text mining environments. Recently the research on this field has been considerably fostered by the necessity for Web users to easily search and browse the growing amount of heterogeneous multilingual contents available on-line as well as by the related spread of the Semantic Web. A common approach to cross-lingual text mining relies on the exploitation of sets of properly structured multilingual knowledge resources. The involvement of huge communities of users spread over different locations represents a valuable aid to create, enrich, and refine these knowledge resources. Collaborative editing Web environments are usually exploited to this purpose.
This thesis analyzes the features of several knowledge editing tools, both semantic wikis and ontology editors, and discusses the main challenges related to the design and development of this kind of tools. Subsequently, it presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of the Wikyoto Knowledge Editor, called also Wikyoto. Wikyoto is the collaborative editing Web environment that enables Web users lacking any knowledge engineering background to edit the multilingual network of knowledge resources exploited by KYOTO, a cross-lingual text mining system developed in the context of the KYOTO European Project.
To experiment real benefits from social editing of knowledge resources, it is important to provide common Web users with simplified and intuitive interfaces and interaction patterns. Users need to be motivated and properly driven so as to supply information useful for cross-lingual text mining. In addition, the management and coordination of their concurrent editing actions involve relevant technical issues.
In the design of Wikyoto, all these requirements have been considered together with the structure and the set of knowledge resources exploited by KYOTO. Wikyoto aims at enabling common Web users to formalize cross-lingual knowledge by exploiting simplified language-driven interactions. At the same time, Wikyoto generates the set of complex knowledge structures needed by computers to mine information from textual contents. The learning curve of Wikyoto has been kept as shallow as possible by hiding the complexity of the knowledge structures to the users. This goal has been pursued by both enhancing the simplicity and interactivity of knowledge editing patterns and by using natural language interviews to carry out the most complex knowledge editing tasks. In this context, TMEKO, a methodology useful to support users to easily formalize cross-lingual information by natural language interviews has been defined.
