Multimodal agent interfaces and system architectures for health and fitness companions
Multimodal conversational spoken dialogues using physical and virtual agents provide a potential interface to motivate and support users in the domain of health and fitness. In this paper we present how such multimodal conversational Companions can be implemented to support their owners in various pervasive and mobile settings. In particular, we focus on different forms of multimodality and system architectures for such interfaces
Learning how to learn: an adaptive dialogue agent for incrementally learning visually grounded word meanings
We present an optimised multi-modal dialogue agent for interactive learning
of visually grounded word meanings from a human tutor, trained on real
human-human tutoring data. Within a life-long interactive learning period, the
agent, trained using Reinforcement Learning (RL), must be able to handle
natural conversations with human users and achieve good learning performance
(accuracy) while minimising human effort in the learning process. We train and
evaluate this system in interaction with a simulated human tutor, which is
built on the BURCHAK corpus -- a Human-Human Dialogue dataset for the visual
learning task. The results show that: 1) The learned policy can coherently
interact with the simulated user to achieve the goal of the task (i.e. learning
visual attributes of objects, e.g. colour and shape); and 2) it finds a better
trade-off between classifier accuracy and tutoring costs than hand-crafted

Agents for educational games and simulations
This book consists mainly of revised papers that were presented at the Agents for Educational Games and Simulation (AEGS) workshop held on May 2, 2011, as part of the Autonomous Agents and MultiAgent Systems (AAMAS) conference in Taipei, Taiwan. The 12 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from various submissions. Natural Language Dialogue Service for Appointment Scheduling Agents
Appointment scheduling is a problem faced daily by many individuals and
organizations. Cooperating agent systems have been developed to partially
automate this task. In order to extend the circle of participants as far as
possible we advocate the use of natural language transmitted by e-mail. We
describe COSMA, a fully implemented German language server for existing
appointment scheduling agent systems. COSMA can cope with multiple dialogues in
parallel, and accounts for differences in dialogue behaviour between human and
machine agents. NL coverage of the sublanguage is achieved through both

Improving Search through A3C Reinforcement Learning based Conversational Agent
We develop a reinforcement learning based search assistant which can assist
users through a set of actions and sequence of interactions to enable them
realize their intent. Our approach caters to subjective search where the user
is seeking digital assets such as images which is fundamentally different from
the tasks which have objective and limited search modalities. Labeled
conversational data is generally not available in such search tasks and
training the agent through human interactions can be time consuming. We propose
a stochastic virtual user which impersonates a real user and can be used to
sample user behavior efficiently to train the agent which accelerates the
bootstrapping of the agent. We develop A3C algorithm based context preserving
architecture which enables the agent to provide contextual assistance to the
user. We compare the A3C agent with Q-learning and evaluate its performance on
average rewards and state values it obtains with the virtual user in validation
episodes. Our experiments show that the agent learns to achieve higher rewards
