International stock return comovements
We examine international stock return comovements using country-industry and country-style portfolios as the base portfolios. We first establish that parsimonious risk-based factor models capture the covariance structure of the data better than the popular Heston- ouwenhorst (1994) model. We then establish the following stylized facts regarding stock return comovements. First, we do not find evidence for an upward trend in return correlations, except for the European stock markets. Second, the increasing importance of industry factors relative to country factors was a short-lived, temporary phenomenon. How significant is the impact of irrigation on the local hydroclimate in Californias Central Valley? Comparison of model results with ground and remote-sensing data
The effect of irrigation on regional climate has been studied over the years. However, in most studies, the model was usually set at coarse resolution, and the soil moisture was set to field capacity at each time step. We reinvestigated this issue over the Central Valley of California's agricultural area by: (1) using the regional climate model at different resolutions down to the finest resolution of 4 km for the most inner domain, covering California's Central Valley, the central coast, the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and water; (2) using a more realistic irrigation scheme in the model through the use of different allowable soil water depletion configurations; and (3) evaluating the simulated results against satellite and in situ observations available through the California Irrigation Management Information System (CIMIS). The simulation results with fine model resolution and with the more realistic irrigation scheme indicate that the surface meteorological fields are noticeably improved when compared with observations from the CIMIS network and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data. Our results also indicate that irrigation has significant impacts on local meteorological fields by decreasing temperature by 3°-7°C and increasing relative humidity by 9-20%, depending on model resolutions and allowable soil water depletion configurations. More significantly, our results using the improved model show that the effects of irrigation on weather and climate do not extend very far into nonirrigated regions. A Scalable Byzantine Grid
Modern networks assemble an ever growing number of nodes. However, it remains
difficult to increase the number of channels per node, thus the maximal degree
of the network may be bounded. This is typically the case in grid topology
networks, where each node has at most four neighbors. In this paper, we address
the following issue: if each node is likely to fail in an unpredictable manner,
how can we preserve some global reliability guarantees when the number of nodes
keeps increasing unboundedly ? To be more specific, we consider the problem or
reliably broadcasting information on an asynchronous grid in the presence of
Byzantine failures -- that is, some nodes may have an arbitrary and potentially
malicious behavior. Our requirement is that a constant fraction of correct
nodes remain able to achieve reliable communication. Existing solutions can
only tolerate a fixed number of Byzantine failures if they adopt a worst-case
placement scheme. Besides, if we assume a constant Byzantine ratio (each node
has the same probability to be Byzantine), the probability to have a fatal
placement approaches 1 when the number of nodes increases, and reliability
guarantees collapse. In this paper, we propose the first broadcast protocol
that overcomes these difficulties. First, the number of Byzantine failures that
can be tolerated (if they adopt the worst-case placement) now increases with
the number of nodes. Second, we are able to tolerate a constant Byzantine
ratio, however large the grid may be. In other words, the grid becomes
scalable. This result has important security applications in ultra-large
networks, where each node has a given probability to misbehave.Comment: 17 page
Individual patient data meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of community occupational therapy for stroke patients
<p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> Trials of occupational therapy for stroke patients living in the community have varied in their findings. It is unclear why these discrepancies have occurred.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> Trials were identified from searches of the Cochrane Library and other sources. The primary outcome measure was the Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living (NEADL) score at the end of intervention. Secondary outcome measures included the Barthel Index or the Rivermead ADL (Personal ADL), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), Nottingham Leisure Questionnaire (NLQ), and death. Data were analyzed using linear or logistic regression with a random effect for trial and adjustment for age, gender, baseline dependency, and method of follow-up. Subgroup analyses compared any occupational therapy intervention with control.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> We included 8 single-blind randomized controlled trials incorporating 1143 patients. Occupational therapy was associated with higher NEADL scores at the end of intervention (weighted mean difference [WMD], 1.30 points, 95% confidence intervals [CI], 0.47 to 2.13) and higher leisure scores at the end of intervention (WMD, 1.51 points; 95% CI, 0.24 to 2.79). Occupational therapy emphasizing activities of daily living (ADL) was associated with improved end of intervention NEADL (WMD, 1.61 points; 95% CI, 0.72 to 2.49) and personal activities of daily living (odds ratio [OR], 0.65; 95% CI, 0.46 to 0.91), but not NLQ. Leisure-based occupational therapy improved end of intervention NLQ (WMD, 1.96 points; 95% CI, 0.27 to 3.66) but not NEADL or PADL.</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> Community occupational therapy significantly improved personal and extended activities of daily living and leisure activity in patients with stroke. Better outcomes were found with targeted interventions.</p>
