Origins of Modern Data Analysis Linked to the Beginnings and Early Development of Computer Science and Information Engineering

    Get PDF
The history of data analysis that is addressed here is underpinned by two themes, -- those of tabular data analysis, and the analysis of collected heterogeneous data. "Exploratory data analysis" is taken as the heuristic approach that begins with data and information and seeks underlying explanation for what is observed or measured. I also cover some of the evolving context of research and applications, including scholarly publishing, technology transfer and the economic relationship of the university to society.Comment: 26 page

Automatic extraction of linguistic models for image description

    Get PDF
This paper describes a methodology to extract fuzzy models that describe linguistically the low-level features of an image (such as color, texture, etc.). The methodology combines grid-based algorithms with clustering and tabular simplification methods to compress image information into a small number of fuzzy rules with high linguistic meaning. All the steps of the methodology are carried out with the help offered by the tools of Xfuzzy 3 environment, so we can define, simplify, tune and verify the fuzzy models automatically. Several examples are included to illustrate the advantages of the methodolog

A SURVEY ON PRIVACY PRESERVING TECHNIQUES FOR SOCIAL NETWORK DATA

    Get PDF
In this era of 20th century, online social network like Facebook, twitter, etc. plays a very important role in everyone's life. Social network data, regarding any individual organization can be published online at any time, in which there is a risk of information leakage of anyone's personal data. So preserving the privacy of individual organizations and companies are needed before data is published online. Therefore the research was carried out in this area for many years and it is still going on. There have been various existing techniques that provide the solutions for preserving privacy to tabular data called as relational data and also social network data represented in graphs. Different techniques exists for tabular data but you can't apply directly to the structured complex graph  data, which consists of vertices represented as individuals and edges representing some kind of connection or relationship between the nodes. Various techniques like K-anonymity, L-diversity, and T-closeness exist to provide privacy to nodes and techniques like edge perturbation, edge randomization are there to provide privacy to edges in social graphs. Development of new techniques by  Integration to exiting techniques like K-anonymity ,edge perturbation, edge randomization, L-Diversity are still going on to provide more privacy to relational data and social network data are ongoingin the best possible manner.Â

Using Xfuzzy environment for the whole design of fuzzy systems

Since 1992, Xfuzzy environment has been improving to ease the design of fuzzy systems. The current version, Xfuzzy 3, which is entirely programmed in Java, includes a wide set of new featured tools that allow automating the whole design process of a fuzzy logic based system: from its description (in the XFL3 language) to its synthesis in C, C++ or Java (to be included in software projects) or in VHDL (for hardware projects). The new features of the current version have been exploited in different application areas such as autonomous robot navigation and image processing.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología DPI2005-02293 y TEC2005-04359Junta de Andalucía TIC2006-635 y TEP2006-37

Towards Customizable Chart Visualizations of Tabular Data Using Knowledge Graphs

    Get PDF
Scientific articles are typically published as PDF documents, thus rendering the extraction and analysis of results a cumbersome, error-prone, and often manual effort. New initiatives, such as ORKG, focus on transforming the content and results of scientific articles into structured, machine-readable representations using Semantic Web technologies. In this article, we focus on tabular data of scientific articles, which provide an organized and compressed representation of information. However, chart visualizations can additionally facilitate their comprehension. We present an approach that employs a human-in-the-loop paradigm during the data acquisition phase to define additional semantics for tabular data. The additional semantics guide the creation of chart visualizations for meaningful representations of tabular data. Our approach organizes tabular data into different information groups which are analyzed for the selection of suitable visualizations. The set of suitable visualizations serves as a user-driven selection of visual representations. Additionally, customization for visual representations provides the means for facilitating the understanding and sense-making of information

Application of remote sensing to state and regional problems

The methods and procedures used, accomplishments, current status, and future plans are discussed for each of the following applications of LANDSAT in Mississippi: (1) land use planning in Lowndes County; (2) strip mine inventory and reclamation; (3) white-tailed deer habitat evaluation; (4) remote sensing data analysis support systems; (5) discrimination of unique forest habitats in potential lignite areas; (6) changes in gravel operations; and (7) determining freshwater wetlands for inventory and monitoring. The documentation of all existing software and the integration of the image analysis and data base software into a single package are now considered very high priority items
