The FTR model arises as the natural generalization of the two-wave with diffuse power (TWDP) fading model; this generalization allows its two specular components to exhibit a random amplitude fluctuation. Unlike the TWDP model, all the chief probability functions of the FTR fading model (PDF, CDF, and MGF) are expressed in closed-form, having a functional form similar to other state-of-the-art fading models. We also provide approximate closed-form expressions for the PDF and CDF in terms of a finite number of elementary functions, which allow for a simple evaluation of these statistics to an arbitrary level of precision. We show that the FTR fading model provides a much better fit than Rician fading for recent small-scale fading measurements in 28 GHz outdoor mm-wave channels. Finally, the performance of wireless communication systems over FTR fading is evaluated in terms of the bit error rate and the outage capacity, and the interplay between the FTR fading model parameters and the system performance is discussed. Monte Carlo simulations have been carried out in order to validate the obtained theoretical expressions.Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional. AndalucÃa Tech
A Stochastic Geometric Analysis of Device-to-Device Communications Operating over Generalized Fading Channels
Device-to-device (D2D) communications are now considered as an integral part
of future 5G networks which will enable direct communication between user
equipment (UE) without unnecessary routing via the network infrastructure. This
architecture will result in higher throughputs than conventional cellular
networks, but with the increased potential for co-channel interference induced
by randomly located cellular and D2D UEs. The physical channels which
constitute D2D communications can be expected to be complex in nature,
experiencing both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) conditions across
closely located D2D pairs. As well as this, given the diverse range of
operating environments, they may also be subject to clustering of the scattered
multipath contribution, i.e., propagation characteristics which are quite
dissimilar to conventional Rayeligh fading environments. To address these
challenges, we consider two recently proposed generalized fading models, namely
and , to characterize the fading behavior in D2D
communications. Together, these models encompass many of the most widely
encountered and utilized fading models in the literature such as Rayleigh, Rice
(Nakagami-), Nakagami-, Hoyt (Nakagami-) and One-Sided Gaussian. Using
stochastic geometry we evaluate the rate and bit error probability of D2D
networks under generalized fading conditions. Based on the analytical results,
we present new insights into the trade-offs between the reliability, rate, and
mode selection under realistic operating conditions. Our results suggest that
D2D mode achieves higher rates over cellular link at the expense of a higher
bit error probability. Through numerical evaluations, we also investigate the
performance gains of D2D networks and demonstrate their superiority over
traditional cellular networks.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
Analytic solutions to a Marcum Q-function-based integral and application in energy detection of unknown signals over multipath fading channels
This work presents analytic solutions for a useful integral in wireless
communications, which involves the Marcum function in combination with an
exponential function and arbitrary power terms. The derived expressions have a
rather simple algebraic representation which renders them convenient both
analytically and computationally. Furthermore, they can be useful in wireless
communications and particularly in the context of cognitive radio
communications and radar systems, where this integral is often encountered. To
this end, we derive novel expressions for the probability of detection in
energy detection based spectrum sensing over fading channels.
These expressions are given in closed-form and are subsequently employed in
analyzing the effects of generalised multipath fading conditions in cognitive
radio systems. As expected, it is shown that the detector is highly dependent
upon the severity of fading conditions as even slight variation of the fading
parameters affect the corresponding performance significantly.Comment: Latest/Preprint Versio
