    3-level confidence voting strategy for dynamic fusion-selection of classifier ensembles

    There are two different stages to consider when constructing multiple classifier systems: The Meta-Classifier Stage that is responsible for the combination logic and basically treats the ensemble members as black boxes, and the Classifier Stage where the functionality of members is in focus. Furthermore, on the upper stage - also called voting strategy stage - the method of combining members can be done by fusion and selection of classifiers. In this paper, we propose a novel procedure for building the meta-classifier stage of MCSs, using an oracle of three-level voting strategy. This is a dynamic, half fusion-half selection type method for ensemble member combination, which is midway between the extremes of fusion and selection. The MCS members are weighted and combined with the help of the oracle, which is founded on a voting strategy of three levels: (1) The Local Implicit Confidence (LIC), (2) The Global Explicit Confidence (GEC), and (3) The Local Explicit Confidence (LEC). The first confidence segment is dependent of classifier construction, via the implicit knowledge gathered simultaneously with training. Since this strongly depends on the internal operation of the classifier, it can not always be obtained, for example, when using some particularly complex classification methods. We used several, known classifier algorithms (Decision Trees, Neural Networks, Logistic Regression, SVM) where it is possible to extract this information. The second goodness index is calculated on the validation partition of the labeled train data. It is used to obtain the general accuracy of a single classifier using a data set independent of the training partition. And finally, the third part of the confidence triplet depends also on the unlabeled objects yet to be classified. Due to this, it can only be calculated in classification time

    Stereo and ToF Data Fusion by Learning from Synthetic Data

    Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensors and stereo vision systems are both capable of acquiring depth information but they have complementary characteristics and issues. A more accurate representation of the scene geometry can be obtained by fusing the two depth sources. In this paper we present a novel framework for data fusion where the contribution of the two depth sources is controlled by confidence measures that are jointly estimated using a Convolutional Neural Network. The two depth sources are fused enforcing the local consistency of depth data, taking into account the estimated confidence information. The deep network is trained using a synthetic dataset and we show how the classifier is able to generalize to different data, obtaining reliable estimations not only on synthetic data but also on real world scenes. Experimental results show that the proposed approach increases the accuracy of the depth estimation on both synthetic and real data and that it is able to outperform state-of-the-art methods

Solutions tend to be custom fit to the dataset used but fails to generalize. The Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in combination with Support Vector Machine (SVM) form a robust selection between powerful invariant feature extractor and accurate classifier. The fusion of experts provides stability in classification rates among different datasets

    AXES at TRECVID 2012: KIS, INS, and MED

    The AXES project participated in the interactive instance search task (INS), the known-item search task (KIS), and the multimedia event detection task (MED) for TRECVid 2012. As in our TRECVid 2011 system, we used nearly identical search systems and user interfaces for both INS and KIS. Our interactive INS and KIS systems focused this year on using classifiers trained at query time with positive examples collected from external search engines. Participants in our KIS experiments were media professionals from the BBC; our INS experiments were carried out by students and researchers at Dublin City University. We performed comparatively well in both experiments. Our best KIS run found 13 of the 25 topics, and our best INS runs outperformed all other submitted runs in terms of P@100. For MED, the system presented was based on a minimal number of low-level descriptors, which we chose to be as large as computationally feasible. These descriptors are aggregated to produce high-dimensional video-level signatures, which are used to train a set of linear classifiers. Our MED system achieved the second-best score of all submitted runs in the main track, and best score in the ad-hoc track, suggesting that a simple system based on state-of-the-art low-level descriptors can give relatively high performance.     Fusion ARTMAP: An Adaptive Fuzzy Network for Multi-Channel Classification

    Fusion ARTMAP is a self-organizing neural network architecture for multi-channel, or multi-sensor, data fusion. Fusion ARTMAP generalizes the fuzzy ARTMAP architecture in order to adaptively classify multi-channel data. The network has a symmetric organization such that each channel can be dynamically configured to serve as either a data input or a teaching input to the system. An ART module forms a compressed recognition code within each channel. These codes, in turn, beco1ne inputs to a single ART system that organizes the global recognition code. When a predictive error occurs, a process called parallel match tracking simultaneously raises vigilances in multiple ART modules until reset is triggered in one of thmn. Parallel match tracking hereby resets only that portion of the recognition code with the poorest match, or minimum predictive confidence.     An Overview of Classifier Fusion Methods

    A number of classifier fusion methods have been recently developed opening an alternative approach leading to a potential improvement in the classification performance. As there is little theory of information fusion itself, currently we are faced with different methods designed for different problems and producing different results. This paper gives an overview of classifier fusion methods and attempts to identify new trends that may dominate this area of research in future. A taxonomy of fusion methods trying to bring some order into the existing “pudding of diversities” is also provided
