From the western classics to the world: secondary music teachers' changing attitudes in England 1982 and 1998

Two parallel samples of secondary music teachers in England, taken from 1982 and 1998, reveal similarities and differences in their evaluations and uses of twentieth and pre-twentieth century Western classical music, folk music, popular music, jazz and ‘world’ music. Least change occurs with relation to folk and pre-twentieth century classical music; most with relation to popular and world musics. The status of classical music is high in each of the two time periods, but in different ways. By the end of the century, teachers’ views of musical value have overall, shifted radically towards more global perspectives, and their classroom approaches include far more integrated practical work involving performing, composing and listening, with an emphasis on cross-stylistic comparisons and musical universals

Automatic Raga Recognition in Hindustani Classical Music

Raga is the central melodic concept in Hindustani Classical Music. It has a complex structure, often characterized by pathos. In this paper, we describe a technique for Automatic Raga Recognition, based on pitch distributions. Perancangan Bandung Classical Music Center dengan Pendekatan Modern Culture

Musik klasik cenderung dianggap sebagai music yang membosankan dan terkesan elit. Selain itu kurangnya fasilitas yang disediakan oleh baikpemerintah maupun swasta membuat music klasik memiliki sedikit penggemar. Namun penggemar tersebut disebut sebagai komunitas, dan tak ayalkomunitas tersebut yang akan memajukan music klasik di Indonesia. Sehingga dirasa perlu dirancangnya Bandung Classical Music Center sebagaiwadah bagi komunitas tersebut untuk dapat bergerak kreatif di bidang music klasik.// /

Karta Pustaka is one of the cultural institutions in Yogyakarta, which has a classical music concert program. The purpose of this study is to describe the history of Karta Pustaka and organizing classical music concerts, the concert format, and its role in supporting classical music education in Yogyakarta. The method used in this study is qualitative research with historical and musicological approach.The data are collected by using interviews, documents and observations. Data were analyzed using qualitative descriptions technicians. The results showed that Karta Pustaka as cultural institution has become a classical musicmedia which has a supporting role in classical music education in Yogyakarta. The classical music concert program and classical music workshop held by Karta Pustaka information and knowledge for the students and people of musical art in Yogyakarta. In addition Karta Pustaka also acts as a forming media and the development of consumer's classical music tastes and styles in Yogyakarta
