    Extraterritorial Intellectual Property Enforcement in the European Union

    This paper was prepared for the 2011 ABILA International Law Weekend ā€“ West volume of the Southwestern Journal of International Law. It addresses extraterritorial enforcement of intellectual property rights in the European Union. The maximum length of the paper was set by the Journal. The problems associated with extraterritorial enforcement of intellectual property rights in the European Union (the ā€œEUā€) may be divided into three categories: enforcement of unitary EU-wide rights, enforcement of multiple national rights, and enforcement of rights based on one national law with extraterritorial effects on activities in other countries. Although these are three distinct categories of problems, they are interconnected; problems in one category may exacerbate problems in another category, and solutions developed in one category may contribute to the resolution of problems in another category. This article briefly reviews the three categories of problems and demonstrates the interrelatedness of solutions that have been developed or will have to be developed to address the problems

    Conformance relations for distributed testing based on CSP

    Copyright @ 2011 Springer Berlin HeidelbergCSP is a well established process algebra that provides comprehensive theoretical and practical support for refinement-based design and verification of systems. Recently, a testing theory for CSP has also been presented. In this paper, we explore the problem of testing from a CSP specification when observations are made by a set of distributed testers. We build on previous work on input-output transition systems, but the use of CSP leads to significant differences, since some of its conformance (refinement) relations consider failures as well as traces. In addition, we allow events to be observed by more than one tester. We show how the CSP notions of refinement can be adapted to distributed testing. We consider two contexts: when the testers are entirely independent and when they can cooperate. Finally, we give some preliminary results on test-case generation and the use of coordination messages. Ā© 2011 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing

    Risk attitude, beliefs, and information in a corruption game: An experimental analysis

    For our experiment on corruption we designed a coordination game to model the influence of risk attitudes, beliefs, and information on behavioral choices and determined the equilibria. We observed that the participants' risk attitudes failed to explain their choices between corrupt and non-corrupt behavior. Instead, beliefs appeared to be a better predictor of whether or not they would opt for the corrupt alternative. Furthermore, varying the quantity of information available to players (modeled by changing the degree of uncertainty) provided additional insight into the players' propensity to engage in corrupt behavior.     Magnetism in Rare Earth Quasicrystals: RKKY Interactions and Ordering

    We study magnetism in simple models for rare earth quasicrystals by means of a two-step theoretical approach. First, we compute RKKY interactions from a tight-binding Hamiltonian defined on a two-dimensional quasiperiodic tiling. Second, we examine the statistical mechanics of Ising spins coupled via these interactions using Monte Carlo simulations. We find the emergence of strongly coupled spin clusters with significantly weaker inter-cluster coupling, and a transition to a low-temperature phase that has long-range order evidenced by a finite domain wall tension.Comment: restructuring of paper and update of numerical results, 5 pages, 4 figure
