Der Begriff 'Befreiung' in chinesischen Uebersetzungen der Mahâyâna-Sûtras

Die vorliegende Untersuchung soll zum Verständnis des Begriffes "Befreiung" im chinesischen Buddhismus beitragen. In der Arbeit ist dieser Begriff hauptsächlich auf der religiösen unf philosophischen Ebene betrachtet worden. Als Hauptziel wird eine Definition des Begriffes "Befreiung" im Mahâyâna-Buddhismus angestrebt. Die Methode, die zu diesem Ziel führen soll, besteht in einer lexikographischen und philosophischen Analyse der chinesischen Texte, indem einzelne Lexeme und Ideen betrachtet werden. Des Weiteren beschränkt sich diese Forschungsarbeit auf bestimmte Schriften und bestimmte Begriffe. Der Begriff "Befreiung" erlangte in Mahâyâna eine besondere Rolle. Schulen des frühen Buddhismus legten Gewicht auf die Selbstbefreiung. Erst mit dem Mahâyâna wurde die Befreiung auf alle Lebewesen erweitert. Fortan konnte jeder Mensch von einem Bodhisattva aus der leidvollen Welt hinausgeführt werden. Gleichfalls konnte jeder auch ein Bodhisattva werden und die Befreiung herbeiführen. Neben der inhaltlichen Untersuchung des Begriffes "Befreiung" wurde auch eine sprachliche Analyse durchgeführt. Als Ausgangspunkt dienten vier sinnverwandte Wörter aus dem Chinesischen, die in Bezug auf die Etymologie, Lexikographie und Grammatik dargestellt sind. Die Forschung umfasst vier Teile. Im ersten Teil wird die Idee der Befreiung aus der Sicht verschiedener nicht-buddhistischer religiösen Lehren dargestellt. Im zweiten Teil erfolgt auf der Grundlage alter chinesischer Wörterbücher eine sprachliche und etymologische Untersuchung der chinesischen Begriffe. Im dritten Teil wird die geschichtliche Entwicklung des Mahâyâna-Buddhismus und der Sûtras in Indien und in China geschildert. Darauf folgt eine inhaltliche und sprachliche Analyse der ausgewählten Schriften. Im vierten Teil sind die reichhaltigen Bedeutungsebenen des Begriffes "Befreiung" im Mahâyâna-Buddhismus allgemein dargelegt. Ebenso fasst dieser Teil die spezifischen Bedeutungen der Befreiung in den analysierten Sûtras zusammen. Im Anhang folgen eine Fragmente aus dem "Sûtra der grossen Befreiung", die hiermit erstmalig ins Deutsch übertragen wird

Chinese Buddhist texts for the new Millenium — The Chinese Buddhist Electronic Text Association (CBETA) and its Digital Tripitaka

This paper deals mostly with work by the Chinese Buddhist Electronic Text Association (CBETA) in preparing an electronic edition of a large collection of Chinese Buddhist texts. A short opening section about the history and significance of these texts is followed by a sketch of the digitization efforts prior to the CBETA project. The main part of the paper provides some background on the organizational structure and aims of CBETA, and then describes key aspects of the CBETA project, which are, among others: focus on quality assurance of existing electronic data, not foremost on input; reliance on open standards like the TEI Guidelines, XML and Unicode. The paper closes with an assessment of open questions, including the different formats for distribution of texts currently used by CBTEA, the reasons for their choice and the problems encountered. This will also touch on some more general questions concerning the distribution and continuing development of electronic ressources
