Choosing more mathematics : happiness through work?

This paper examines how A-level students construct relationships between work and happiness in their accounts of choosing mathematics and further mathematics A-level. I develop a theoretical framework that positions work and happiness as opposed, managed and working on the self and use this to examine students' dual engagement with individual practices of the self and institutional practices of school mathematics. Interviews with students acknowledge four imperatives that they use as discursive resources to position themselves as successful/unsuccessful students: you have to work, you have to not work, you have to be happy, you have to work at being happy. Tensions in these positions lead students to rework their identities or drop further mathematics. I then identify the practices of mathematics teaching that students use to explain un/happiness in work, and show how dependable mathematics and working together are constructed as 'happy objects' for students, who develop strategies for claiming control over these shapers of happiness. © 2010 British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics

Pulsed energy-time entangled twin-photon source for quantum communication

A pulsed source of energy-time entangled photon pairs pumped by a standard laser diode is proposed and demonstrated. The basic states can be distinguished by their time of arrival. This greatly simplifies the realization of 2-photon quantum cryptography, Bell state analyzers, quantum teleportation, dense coding, entanglement swapping, GHZ-states sources, etc. Moreover the entanglement is well protected during photon propagation in telecom optical fibers, opening the door to few-photon applications of quantum communication over long distances.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Experimental Quantum Teleportation with a 3-Bell-state Analyzer

We present a Bell-state analyzer for time-bin qubits allowing the detection of three out of four Bell-states with linear optics, two detectors and no auxiliary photons. The theoretical success rate of this scheme is 50%. A teleportation experiment was performed to demonstrate its functionality. We also present a teleportation experiment with a Fidelity larger than the cloning limit of F=5/6.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure

Isi penelitian ini berdasarkan penelitian ilmiah yang berjudul "Gaya Vokal Melayu Charly Van Houtten". Penulis merasa perlu untuk meneliti hal ini, karena kurangnya penelitian mengenai Gaya bernyanyi sesorang penyanyi, khususnya pada gaya vokal Charly. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui gaya vokal Charly pada lagu Pop Melayu. Adapun lagu yang dijadikan contoh oleh penulis untuk dijadikan sampel penelitian adalah lagu Gerimis Mengundang. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data-data diperoleh melalui observasi dan wawancara dengan Charly, Engenerring. Hasil penemuan dalam penelitian ini adalah tentang gaya vokal Charly pada lagu Melayu Gerimis Mengundang. Dalam hal latihan proses menemukan karakter suara dan teknik bernyanyi yang dibawakan Charly memiliki karakteristik gaya vokal yang unik dari penyanyi melayu lainnya, ciri khasnya yang kuat pada lagu gerimis mengundang maupun jenis lagu melayu lainnya, menjadikan charly sebagai ikon melayu Indonesia. Dari hasil penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan juga bahwa dengan mengetahui serta memahami pembawaan vokal charly pada lagu gerimis mengundang, pembentukan gaya di hasilkan karena latihan dan proses yang banjang. New, Highly Accurate Propagator for the Linear and Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation

A propagation method for the time dependent Schr\"odinger equation was studied leading to a general scheme of solving ode type equations. Standard space discretization of time-dependent pde's usually results in system of ode's of the form u_t -Gu = s where G is a operator (matrix) and u is a time-dependent solution vector. Highly accurate methods, based on polynomial approximation of a modified exponential evolution operator, had been developed already for this type of problems where G is a linear, time independent matrix and s is a constant vector. In this paper we will describe a new algorithm for the more general case where s is a time-dependent r.h.s vector. An iterative version of the new algorithm can be applied to the general case where G depends on t or u. Numerical results for Schr\"odinger equation with time-dependent potential and to non-linear Schr\"odinger equation will be presented.Comment: 14 page
