An Evaluation of the X10 Programming Language

As predicted by Moore\u27s law, the number of transistors on a chip has been doubled approximately every two years. As miraculous as it sounds, for many years, the extra transistors have massively benefited the whole computer industry, by using the extra transistors to increase CPU clock speed, thus boosting performance. However, due to heat wall and power constraints, the clock speed cannot be increased limitlessly. Hardware vendors now have to take another path other than increasing clock speed, which is to utilize the transistors to increase the number of processor cores on each chip. This hardware structural change presents inevitable challenges to software structure, where single thread targeted software will not benefit from newer chips or may even suffer from lower clock speed. The two fundamental challenges are: 1. How to deal with the stagnation of single core clock speed and cache memory. 2. How to utilize the additional power generated from more cores on a chip. Most software programming languages nowadays have distributed computing support, such as C and Java [1]. Meanwhile, some new programming languages were invented from scratch just to take advantage of the more distributed hardware structures. The X10 Programming Language is one of them. Distilling Research into Actionable Knowledge: An Assessment of a Conservation Buffer Guide

Agriculture and natural resources Extension professionals face increasing challenges in delivering evidence-based information to clients. Illustrated design guidelines may offer one tool for presenting useful information, particularly when delivering assistance for multifunctional solutions. Using conservation buffers as the technical topic, the study reported here evaluated resource professionals\u27 perception and use of design guidelines to communicate technical information for planning and designing buffers for multiple goals. Overall, the results provide favorable support for design guidelines. The study offers insight into what constitutes effective guidelines, and these lessons learned may be applicable to other topics in Extension programming

Hopeful Homecomings: Women, Prison Reentry and the Arts

Previous studies have highlighted the importance of having gender-responsive programs for women involved in the criminal justice system, that address their different needs, separate from men. Formerly incarcerated women face many challenges as they transition from prison back into society. There are an increasing number of artists with an interest in providing arts programming for this special population as a tool for rehabilitation and transformation. Using website analyses, survey responses, and interview transcriptions, this comparative qualitative study explores why and how three different arts organizations – Poetic Justice Project, Prison Creative Arts Project, and the Judy Dworin Performance Project – use various art approaches to help formerly incarcerated women transition from prison back into society. Although these organizations are limited in resources, my findings suggest that the arts programs provide a community of support for formerly incarcerated women, increase their self-sufficiency, and increase public awareness about incarceration and those affected

Community Change for Youth Development in Kansas City

Kansas City, Missouri, is one of six sites in Community Change for Youth Development (CCYD), a national demonstration project aiming to increase basic supports and opportunities available to youth aged 12-20. The lead agency is the YMCA of Greater Kansas City; because of its considerable organizational capacity and relationship with funders, the YMCA was successful in operating and expanding CCYD. This report focuses on the benefits of working with the YMCA of Greater Kansas City and the challenges faced by the organization in leading a community-based initiative in three urban neighborhoods

CERN openlab Whitepaper on Future IT Challenges in Scientific Research

This whitepaper describes the major IT challenges in scientific research at CERN and several other European and international research laboratories and projects. Each challenge is exemplified through a set of concrete use cases drawn from the requirements of large-scale scientific programs. The paper is based on contributions from many researchers and IT experts of the participating laboratories and also input from the existing CERN openlab industrial sponsors. Leveraging Change: Increasing Access to Arts Education in Rural Areas

In 2015, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) received funding in the first round of collective impact grants from the National Endowment for the Arts to launch the pilot initiative, Leveraging Change: Improving Access to Arts Education in Rural Areas. The authors conducted research which included a literature review and interviews with arts education leaders in rural areas. Using the research compiled through this process, a pilot convening was held in western Massachusetts' Berkshire County to activate ideas, stimulate the exchange of information, and generate cross-sector collaboration focused on strengthening support for arts education in the region. This working paper is a summary of the research results and insights gleaned from this pilot initiative
