    Logistics and the Chaco War Bolivia versus Paraguay, 1932-1935

    This article provides an assessment of how Paraguay, the weaker power, managed to defeat Bolivia in the 1932-35 Chaco War, fought over the disputed and remote Gran Chaco region that separated the two countries. The article argues that Paraguay’s logistical superiority was a decisive factor leading to victory in 1935. It uses a broad definition of logistics to include the acquisition of matériel before the war as well as the establishment of national and international supply lines during the war. Comparing and contrasting Bolivia and Paraguay in the period from the early 1920s to 1935, this article suggests that the preparation and development of an effective logistical infrastructure by Paraguay in the late 1920s and early 1930s were vital for the operational success that it had achieved on the battlefields of the Chaco by late 1933

    Dropwise Condensation Dynamics in Humid Air

    Dropwise condensation of atmospheric water vapor is important in multiple practical engineering applications. The roles of environmental factors and surface morphology/chemistry on the condensation dynamics need to be better understood to enable efficient water-harvesting, dehumidication, and other psychrometric processes. Systems and surfaces that promote faster condensation rates and self-shedding of condensate droplets could lead to improved mass transfer rates and higher water yields in harvesting applications. The thesis presents the design and construction of an experimental facility that allows visualization of the condensation process as a function of relative humidity. Dropwise condensation experiments are performed on a vertically oriented, hydrophobic surface at a controlled relative humidity and surface subcooling temperature. The distribution and growth of water droplets are monitored across the surface at different relative humidities (45%, 50%, 55%, and 70%) at a constant surface subcooling temperature of 15 °C below the ambient temperature. The droplet growth dynamics exhibits a strong dependency on relative humidity in the early stages during which there is a large population of small droplets on the surface and single droplet growth dominates over coalescence effects. At later stages, the dynamics of droplet growth is insensitive to relative humidity due to the dominance of coalescence effects. The overall volumetric rate of condensation on the surface is also assessed as a function of time and ambient relative humidity. Low relative humidity conditions not only slow the absolute rate of condensation, but also prolong an initial transient regime over which the condensation rate remains significantly below the steady-state value. The current state-of-the-art in dropwise condensation research indicates the need for systematic experimental investigations as a function of relative humidity. The improved understanding of the relative humidity effects on the growth of single and distributed droplets offered in this thesis can improve the prediction of heat and mass transfer during dropwise condensation of humid air under differing environmental conditions. This knowledge can be used to engineer condenser systems and surfaces that are adapted for local ambient relative humidity and temperature conditions

    Nutrients retention in functional beef burgers with especial emphasis on lipid profile

    The true retention values of nutrients, with particular reference to fatty acids of dietary importance, were investigated in burgers with none or half of the pork backfat replaced with soybean oil ?healthier burgers (HB)- added with 0g/kg, 5g/kg, 10g/kg and 20g/kg of dry soybean sprouts (DSS) as additive. A multivariate analysis was applied in order to detect the main fatty acids to characterize the finished product. Cooking yield of samples increased with the amount DSS incorporated, meaning that this bulking agent improved retention of water and fat in the matrix. The higher concentration of additive the higher the protein and total fat retention. Respect to fatty acid profile in samples incorporated with 5g/kg, 10g/kg of DSS the loss of fat ?specially saturated fatty acids (SFA) - improved the ratio between polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and SFA. Also analyses of atherogenic and thrombogenic indices indicate that 10g/kg DSS presents the lower values for these parameters. Multivariate analysis shown that fatty acid descriptors with more contribution to variability of total data were miristic, palmitic, linoleic and linolenic fatty acid.Fil: Romero, Mara Cristina.     Assessment of the Quality and Shelf-Life in Enriched n3 PUFA Raw Beef Patties Using Dry Soybean Sprouts as Antioxidant

    The appearance of fresh meat is a major determinant of its appeal to consumers. Ground beef in retail display oxidizes at a faster rate than whole muscle products; the use of antioxidants to break the radical chain reaction in the oxidation process is an effective method for slowing oxidation. Soybean is a complex matrix with several bioactive compounds, including peptides and proteins, isoflavones, saponins, and other compounds with antioxidant properties. This study was conducted for 1) to evaluate the antioxidant properties of dry soybeans sprouts (DSS) from Glycine max (L.) Merr., MUNASQA®; 2) to evaluate quality characteristics of raw beef patties added with dried soybean sprouts at different levels (0.5%, 1% and 2%) and soybean oil as replacer of fat; and 3) to estimate color changes and lipid oxidation of n3 fortified raw beef under frozen storage. Results showed that dry soybean sprouts had a high level of superoxide dismutase enzyme, high total phenolics and flavonoids content and appreciable vitamin c content. Although reduction power was low, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2?-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6- sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radicals scavenging activity were elevated. When different concentrations of DSS were incorporated to enriched beef patties with soybean oil, the nutritional value was slightly affected, while that n3 and n6 fatty acid content were increased around three twice. The beef patties formulated with 1% of natural antioxidant showed significantly (p < 0.05) better color stability than those without antioxidants. The lipid oxidation was inhibited in all cases, and was strongly effective at 1% concentration of DSS being the reduced percent of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) comparable to butilated hydroxianisole (BHA). The results shown in this research suggest that dry soybeans sprouts could also be used as a cheap natural antioxidant source for meat products.Fil: Romero, Mara Cristina.     Neotropical Seasonally Dry Forests: Response of Soil Fungal Communities to Anthropogenic Actions

    The aim of this review was to analyze the information available on soil fungal community of Neotropical Seasonally dry forests, with special attention given to the Chaco area. This review is focused on the loss of soil fungal community due to anthropogenic actions such as forest clearing. Over the last decades, the expansion of the agricultural frontier has had a wide range of physical, chemical and biological effects on Neotropical dry forests. As these changes on the Schinopsis dry forests (Chaco) have rendered the ecosystem vulnerable, these areas have become some of the few protected areas in South America. After analyzing both national and international studies to find the latest research available on the topic we have noticed there is lack of specific studies on soil fungal community in the Chaco area, unlike Cerrado and Caatinga where most studies have been carried out. Therefore, we propose to conduct more in-depth studies on soil fungi in Schinopsis forests to revalue the Chaco fungal community to use them as potential indicators of soil health and to develop new management techniques.Fil: Merlos, Cristina Soledad.     A Reimagining of the Chacoan World

    A new paradigm of the Chacoan world is presented, wherein Chaco Canyon is considered to be a mostly unoccupied architectural complex that functioned primarily as a pilgrimage destination. Chaco was the political, religious, and social focal point of people living in outlying regions. The resident population of the Canyon consisted of a small number of caretakers, charged with maintaining great house structures, food supplies, and their ceremonial contents. Chacoan chiefdoms were mostly located in large, well-watered, agriculturally-based communities situated at the base of mountains that ring the San Juan Basin, e.g., the Chuskas. Chiefly elites lived year-round in those areas, but during pilgrimages they occupied Canyon great houses associated with their respective dynasties, whereas their subjects occupied small houses situated on the Canyon floor. Not having 2000 people in the Canyon renders large-scale irrigated agriculture and massive importation of food unnecessary and provides an adequate explanation for the small number of burials found in the Canyon. Se presenta un nuevo paradigma del mundo chacoano, en el que el Cañón del Chaco es considerado como un complejo arquitectónico mayoritariamente desocupado que funcionaba principalmente como destino de peregrinación. Chaco fue el centro político, religioso y social de las personas que viven en regiones al aire libre. La población residente del Cañón consistía en un pequeño número de cuidadores, encargados de mantener grandes estructuras de casas, suministros de alimentos y su contenido ceremonial. Las jefaturas chacoanas se encontraban principalmente en grandes comunidades agrícolas bien regadas situadas en la base de montañas que anillan la cuenca de San Juan, por ejemplo, los Chuskas. Principalmente las élites vivían durante todo el año en esas áreas, pero durante las peregrinaciones ocuparon grandes casas del Cañón asociadas con sus respectivas dinastías, mientras que sus súbditos ocupaban pequeñas casas situadas en el suelo del Cañón. No tener 2000 personas en el Cañón hace que la agricultura de regadío a gran escala y la importación masiva de alimentos sean innecesarias y proporciona una explicación adecuada para el pequeño número de entierros encontrados en el Cañón

    Predicting the current distribution of the chacoan peccary (catagonus wagneri) in the gran Chaco

    The Chacoan peccary (Catagonus wagneri), or Tagua, an endemic species living in the Chaco eco¬region, is endangered by highly increasing deforestation rates across the region, particularly in the last decade. This situation highlights the need to better understand the current distribution of the species, as well as how environmental conditions affect habitat suitability. This study predicts the distribution of the Chacoan peccary and evaluates the current environmental conditions in the Chaco for this species. Using six environmental variables and 177 confirmed occurrence records (from 2000 to 2015) provided by researchers, we developed a Species Distribution Model (SDM) applying the Maxent algorithm. The final model was highly accurate and significant (p < 0.001; AUC 0.860 ± 0.0268; omission error 1.82 %; post¬hoc validation of omission error using independent presence¬only records 1.33 %), predicting that 46.24 % of the Chaco is suitable habitat for the Chacoan peccary, with the most important areas concentrated in the middle of Paraguay and northern Argentina. Land cover, isothermality and elevation were the variables that better explained the habitat suitability for the Chacoan peccary. Despite some portions of suitable areas occurring inside protected areas, the borders and the central portions of suitable areas have recently suffered from intensive deforestation and development, and most of the highly suitable areas for the species are not under protection.     First record of the invasive Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonnès, 1818) (Squamata, Gekkonidae), in the dry Chaco, Argentina

    The invasive Hemidactylus mabouia (Moreau de Jonnès, 1818) is one of the most widespread introduced species of reptiles, being present in the New World at least 500 years ago. In this work, we report for the first time, the presence of the invasive gecko H. mabouia in the dry Chaco, a biogeographic region included in the Gran Chaco Sudamericano. We collected 3 individuals in an urban zone at Las Lomitas, Patiño department, Formosa Province, Argentina. This new record extends the distribution range of this introduced species by nearly 300 km (in a straight line) from Formosa city, the nearest point previously reported.Fil: Torres, Pablo Javier.     The Stenopodainae (Hemiptera, Heteroptera) of Argentina
