Faster Gossiping in Bidirectional Radio Networks with Large Labels
We consider unknown ad-hoc radio networks, when the underlying network is
bidirectional and nodes can have polynomially large labels. For this model, we
present a deterministic protocol for gossiping which takes rounds. This improves upon the previous best result for deterministic
gossiping for this model by [Gasienec, Potapov, Pagourtizis, Deterministic
Gossiping in Radio Networks with Large labels, ESA (2002)], who present a
protocol of round complexity for this problem. This
resolves open problem posed in [Gasienec, Efficient gossiping in radio
networks, SIROCCO (2009)], who cite bridging gap between lower and upper bounds
for this problem as an important objective. We emphasize that a salient feature
of our protocol is its simplicity, especially with respect to the previous best
known protocol for this problem
Broadcast Scheduling in Interference Environment
Broadcast is a fundamental operation in wireless networks, and nai¨ve flooding is not practical, because it cannot deal
with interference. Scheduling is a good way of avoiding interference, but previous studies on broadcast scheduling algorithms all
assume highly theoretical models such as the unit disk graph model. In this work, we reinvestigate this problem by using the 2-Disk
and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) models. We first design a constant approximation algorithm for the 2-Disk
model and then extend it to the SINR model. This result, to the best of our knowledge, is the first result on broadcast scheduling
algorithms in the SINR model
Fast Structuring of Radio Networks for Multi-Message Communications
We introduce collision free layerings as a powerful way to structure radio
networks. These layerings can replace hard-to-compute BFS-trees in many
contexts while having an efficient randomized distributed construction. We
demonstrate their versatility by using them to provide near optimal distributed
algorithms for several multi-message communication primitives.
Designing efficient communication primitives for radio networks has a rich
history that began 25 years ago when Bar-Yehuda et al. introduced fast
randomized algorithms for broadcasting and for constructing BFS-trees. Their
BFS-tree construction time was rounds, where is the network
diameter and is the number of nodes. Since then, the complexity of a
broadcast has been resolved to be rounds. On the other hand, BFS-trees have been used as a crucial building
block for many communication primitives and their construction time remained a
bottleneck for these primitives.
We introduce collision free layerings that can be used in place of BFS-trees
and we give a randomized construction of these layerings that runs in nearly
broadcast time, that is, w.h.p. in rounds for any constant . We then use these
layerings to obtain: (1) A randomized algorithm for gathering messages
running w.h.p. in rounds. (2) A randomized -message
broadcast algorithm running w.h.p. in rounds. These
algorithms are optimal up to the small difference in the additive
poly-logarithmic term between and . Moreover, they imply the
first optimal round randomized gossip algorithm
High-Performance Broadcast and Multicast Protocols for Multi-Radio Multi-Channel Wireless Mesh Networks
Recently, wireless mesh networks (WMNs) have attracted much attention. A vast amount of unicast, multicast and broadcast protocols has been developed for WMNs or mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). First of all, broadcast and multicast in wireless networks are fundamentally different from the way in which wired networks function due to the well-known wireless broadcast/multicast advantage. Moreover, most broadcast and multicast protocols in wireless networks assume a single-radio single-channel and single-rate network model, or a generalized physical model, which does not take into account the impact of interference. This dissertation focuses on high-performance broadcast and multicast protocols designed for multi-radio multi-channel (MRMC) WMNs. MRMC increases the capacity of the network from different aspects. Multi-radio allows mesh nodes to simultaneously send and receive through different radios to its neighbors. Multi-channel allows channels to be reused across the network, which expands the available spectrum and reduces the interference. Unlike MANETs, WMNs are assumed to be static or with minimal mobility. Therefore, the main design goal in WMNs is to achieve high throughput rather than to maintain connectivity. The capacity of WMNs is constrained by the interference caused by the neighbor nodes. One direct design objective is to minimize or reduce the interference in broadcast and multicast. This dissertation presents a set of broadcast and multicast protocols and mathematical formulations to achieve the design goal in MRMC WMNs. First, the broadcast problem is addressed with full consideration of both inter-node and intra-node interference to achieve efficient broadcast. The interference-aware broadcast protocol simultaneously achieves full reliability, minimum broadcast or multicast latency, minimum redundant transmissions, and high throughput. With an MRMC WMN model, new link and channel quality metrics are defined and are suitable for the design of broadcast and multicast protocols. Second, the minimum cost broadcast problem (MCBP), or minimum number of transmissions problem, is studied for MRMC WMNs. Minimum cost broadcast potentially allows more effective and efficient schedule algorithms to be designed. The proposed protocol with joint consideration of channel assignment reduces the interference to improve the throughput in the MCBP. Minimum cost broadcast in MRMC WMNs is very different from that in the single radio single channel scenario. The channel assignment in MRMC WMNs is used to assign multiple radios of every node to different channels. It determines the actual network connectivity since adjacent nodes have to be assigned to a common channel. Transmission on different channels makes different groups of neighboring nodes, and leads to different interference. Moreover, the selection of channels by the forward nodes impacts on the number of radios needed for broadcasting. Finally, the interference optimization multicast problem in WMNs with directional antennas is discussed. Directional transmissions can greatly reduce radio interference and increase spatial reuse. The interference with directional transmissions is defined for multicast algorithm design. Multicast routing found by the interference-aware algorithm tends to have fewer channel collisions. The research work presented in this dissertation concludes that (1) new and practical link and channel metrics are required for designing broadcast and multicast in MRMC WMNs; (2) a small number of radios is sufficient to significantly improve throughput of broadcast and multicast in WMNs; (3) the number of channels has more impact on almost all performance metrics, such as the throughput, the number of transmission, and interference, in WMNs
Distributed Deterministic Broadcasting in Uniform-Power Ad Hoc Wireless Networks
Development of many futuristic technologies, such as MANET, VANET, iThings,
nano-devices, depend on efficient distributed communication protocols in
multi-hop ad hoc networks. A vast majority of research in this area focus on
design heuristic protocols, and analyze their performance by simulations on
networks generated randomly or obtained in practical measurements of some
(usually small-size) wireless networks. %some library. Moreover, they often
assume access to truly random sources, which is often not reasonable in case of
wireless devices. In this work we use a formal framework to study the problem
of broadcasting and its time complexity in any two dimensional Euclidean
wireless network with uniform transmission powers. For the analysis, we
consider two popular models of ad hoc networks based on the
Signal-to-Interference-and-Noise Ratio (SINR): one with opportunistic links,
and the other with randomly disturbed SINR. In the former model, we show that
one of our algorithms accomplishes broadcasting in rounds, where
is the number of nodes and is the diameter of the network. If nodes
know a priori the granularity of the network, i.e., the inverse of the
maximum transmission range over the minimum distance between any two stations,
a modification of this algorithm accomplishes broadcasting in
rounds.
Finally, we modify both algorithms to make them efficient in the latter model
with randomly disturbed SINR, with only logarithmic growth of performance.
Ours are the first provably efficient and well-scalable, under the two

Radio network algorithms for global communication
Radio networks are a distributed computing model capturing the behavior of devices that communicate via wireless transmissions. Applications of wireless networks have expanded hugely in recent decades due to their convenience and versatility. However, wireless communication presents practical difficulties, particularly in avoiding interference between transmissions. The radio network model provides a theoretical distillation of the behavior of such networks, in order to better understand and facilitate communication.
This thesis concerns fundamental global communication tasks in the radio network model: that is, tasks that require relaying messages throughout the entire network. Examples include broadcasting a message to all devices in a network, or reaching agreement on a single device to act as a coordinator.
We present algorithms to perform global tasks efficiently, and show improved asymptotic running times over a range of environments and model variants. Our results demonstrate an advance over the state of the art in radio network research, and in many cases reach or approach known lower bounds
Broadcasting in Noisy Radio Networks
The widely-studied radio network model [Chlamtac and Kutten, 1985] is a
graph-based description that captures the inherent impact of collisions in
wireless communication. In this model, the strong assumption is made that node
receives a message from a neighbor if and only if exactly one of its
neighbors broadcasts.
We relax this assumption by introducing a new noisy radio network model in
which random faults occur at senders or receivers. Specifically, for a constant
noise parameter , either every sender has probability of
transmitting noise or every receiver of a single transmission in its
neighborhood has probability of receiving noise.
We first study single-message broadcast algorithms in noisy radio networks
and show that the Decay algorithm [Bar-Yehuda et al., 1992] remains robust in
the noisy model while the diameter-linear algorithm of Gasieniec et al., 2007
does not. We give a modified version of the algorithm of Gasieniec et al., 2007
that is robust to sender and receiver faults, and extend both this modified
algorithm and the Decay algorithm to robust multi-message broadcast algorithms.
We next investigate the extent to which (network) coding improves throughput
in noisy radio networks. We address the previously perplexing result of Alon et
al. 2014 that worst case coding throughput is no better than worst case routing
throughput up to constants: we show that the worst case throughput performance
of coding is, in fact, superior to that of routing -- by a
gap -- provided receiver faults are introduced. However, we show that any
coding or routing scheme for the noiseless setting can be transformed to be
robust to sender faults with only a constant throughput overhead. These
transformations imply that the results of Alon et al., 2014 carry over to noisy
