    A probabilistic chemical programmable computer

    The exponential growth of the power of modern digital computers is based upon the miniaturisation of vast nanoscale arrays of electronic switches, but this will be eventually constrained by fabrication limits and power dissipation. Chemical processes have the potential to scale beyond these limits performing computations through chemical reactions, yet the lack of well-defined programmability limits their scalability and performance. We present a hybrid digitally programmable chemical array as a probabilistic computational machine that uses chemical oscillators partitioned in interconnected cells as a computational substrate. This hybrid architecture performs efficient computation by distributing between chemical and digital domains together with error correction. The efficiency is gained by combining digital with probabilistic chemical logic based on nearest neighbour interactions and hysteresis effects. We demonstrated the implementation of one- and two- dimensional Chemical Cellular Automata and solutions to combinatorial optimization problems.Comment: 20 page manuscript, 6 figures, 112 page supplementary volum

    Evolutionary Computation Applied to Urban Traffic Optimization

    At the present time, many sings seem to indicate that we live a global energy and environmental crisis. The scientific community argues that the global warming process is, at least in some degree, a consequence of modern societies unsustainable development. A key area in that situation is the citizens mobility. World economies seem to require fast and efficient transportation infrastructures for a significant fraction of the population. The non-stopping overload process that traffic networks are suffering calls for new solutions. In the vast majority of cases it is not viable to extend that infrastructures due to costs, lack of available space, and environmental impacts. Thus, traffic departments all around the world are very interested in optimizing the existing infrastructures to obtain the very best service they can provide. In the last decade many initiatives have been developed to give the traffic network new management facilities for its better exploitation. They are grouped in the so called Intelligent Transportation Systems. Examples of these approaches are the Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS). Most of them provide drivers or traffic engineers the current traffic real/simulated situation or traffic forecasts. They may even suggest actions to improve the traffic flow. To do so, researchers have done a lot of work improving traffic simulations, specially through the development of accurate microscopic simulators. In the last decades the application of that family of simulators was restricted to small test cases due to its high computing requirements. Currently, the availability of cheap faster computers has changed this situation. Some famous microsimulators are MITSIM(Yang, Q., 1997), INTEGRATION (Rakha, H., et al., 1998), AIMSUN2 (Barcelo, J., et al., 1996), TRANSIMS (Nagel, K. & Barrett, C., 1997), etc. They will be briefly explained in the following section.     Power Droop Reduction In Logic BIST By Scan Chain Reordering

    Significant peak power (PP), thus power droop (PD), during test is a serious concern for modern, complex ICs. In fact, the PD originated during the application of test vectors may produce a delay effect on the circuit under test signal transitions. This event may be erroneously recognized as presence of a delay fault, with consequent generation of an erroneous test fail, thus increasing yield loss. Several solutions have been proposed in the literature to reduce the PD during test of combinational ICs, while fewer approaches exist for sequential ICs. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to reduce peak power/power droop during test of sequential circuits with scan-based Logic BIST. In particular, our approach reduces the switching activity of the scan chains between following capture cycles. This is achieved by an original generation and arrangement of test vectors. The proposed approach presents a very low impact on fault coverage and test time

    Non-determinism in the narrative structure of video games

    PhD ThesisAt the present time, computer games represent a finite interactive system. Even in their more experimental forms, the number of possible interactions between player and NPCs (non-player characters) and among NPCs and the game world has a finite number and is led by a deterministic system in which events can therefore be predicted. This implies that the story itself, seen as the series of events that will unfold during gameplay, is a closed system that can be predicted a priori. This study looks beyond this limitation, and identifies the elements needed for the emergence of a non-finite, emergent narrative structure. Two major contributions are offered through this research. The first contribution comes in the form of a clear categorization of the narrative structures embracing all video game production since the inception of the medium. In order to look for ways to generate a non-deterministic narrative in games, it is necessary to first gain a clear understanding of the current narrative structures implemented and how their impact on users’ experiencing of the story. While many studies have observed the storytelling aspect, no attempt has been made to systematically distinguish among the different ways designers decide how stories are told in games. The second contribution is guided by the following research question: Is it possible to incorporate non-determinism into the narrative structure of computer games? The hypothesis offered is that non-determinism can be incorporated by means of nonlinear dynamical systems in general and Cellular Automata in particular

    Principles and Concepts of Agent-Based Modelling for Developing Geospatial Simulations

    The aim of this paper is to outline fundamental concepts and principles of the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) paradigm, with particular reference to the development of geospatial simulations. The paper begins with a brief definition of modelling, followed by a classification of model types, and a comment regarding a shift (in certain circumstances) towards modelling systems at the individual-level. In particular, automata approaches (e.g. Cellular Automata, CA, and ABM) have been particularly popular, with ABM moving to the fore. A definition of agents and agent-based models is given; identifying their advantages and disadvantages, especially in relation to geospatial modelling. The potential use of agent-based models is discussed, and how-to instructions for developing an agent-based model are provided. Types of simulation / modelling systems available for ABM are defined, supplemented with criteria to consider before choosing a particular system for a modelling endeavour. Information pertaining to a selection of simulation / modelling systems (Swarm, MASON, Repast, StarLogo, NetLogo, OBEUS, AgentSheets and AnyLogic) is provided, categorised by their licensing policy (open source, shareware / freeware and proprietary systems). The evaluation (i.e. verification, calibration, validation and analysis) of agent-based models and their output is examined, and noteworthy applications are discussed.Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a particularly useful medium for representing model input and output of a geospatial nature. However, GIS are not well suited to dynamic modelling (e.g. ABM). In particular, problems of representing time and change within GIS are highlighted. Consequently, this paper explores the opportunity of linking (through coupling or integration / embedding) a GIS with a simulation / modelling system purposely built, and therefore better suited to supporting the requirements of ABM. This paper concludes with a synthesis of the discussion that has proceeded.
