WGBH's Teachers' Domain Rights Assessment
This rights assessment evaluates the feasibility of converting the contents of WGBH's free online educational resource collection Teachers' Domain (http://www.teachersdomain.org) to open content status. It employs a two-pronged approach -- (1) categorizing and determining licensing costs for the website's already-existing media assets, and (2) researching and identifying challenges and solutions to licensing issues.For this report, WGBH identified all of the media assets and elements (the pieces that comprise a given asset) within the Teachers' Domain science collections, researched the rights holders and licensing agreements associated with each one, and created a classification system to identify rights status. This made it possible to determine the action necessary to shift each asset toward open content status, and to estimate the associated costs (if any). This research also mapped the potential difficulties and the opportunities for progress in this area
User experiments with the Eurovision cross-language image retrieval system
In this paper we present Eurovision, a text-based system for cross-language (CL) image retrieval.
The system is evaluated by multilingual users for two search tasks with the system configured in
English and five other languages. To our knowledge this is the first published set of user
experiments for CL image retrieval. We show that: (1) it is possible to create a usable multilingual
search engine using little knowledge of any language other than English, (2) categorizing images
assists the user's search, and (3) there are differences in the way users search between the proposed
search tasks. Based on the two search tasks and user feedback, we describe important aspects of
any CL image retrieval system
Interactive Search and Exploration in Online Discussion Forums Using Multimodal Embeddings
In this paper we present a novel interactive multimodal learning system,
which facilitates search and exploration in large networks of social multimedia
users. It allows the analyst to identify and select users of interest, and to
find similar users in an interactive learning setting. Our approach is based on
novel multimodal representations of users, words and concepts, which we
simultaneously learn by deploying a general-purpose neural embedding model. We
show these representations to be useful not only for categorizing users, but
also for automatically generating user and community profiles. Inspired by
traditional summarization approaches, we create the profiles by selecting
diverse and representative content from all available modalities, i.e. the
text, image and user modality. The usefulness of the approach is evaluated
using artificial actors, which simulate user behavior in a relevance feedback
scenario. Multiple experiments were conducted in order to evaluate the quality
of our multimodal representations, to compare different embedding strategies,
and to determine the importance of different modalities. We demonstrate the
capabilities of the proposed approach on two different multimedia collections
originating from the violent online extremism forum Stormfront and the
microblogging platform Twitter, which are particularly interesting due to the
high semantic level of the discussions they feature
ImageSieve: Exploratory search of museum archives with named entity-based faceted browsing
Over the last few years, faceted search emerged as an attractive alternative to the traditional "text box" search and has become one of the standard ways of interaction on many e-commerce sites. However, these applications of faceted search are limited to domains where the objects of interests have already been classified along several independent dimensions, such as price, year, or brand. While automatic approaches to generate faceted search interfaces were proposed, it is not yet clear to what extent the automatically-produced interfaces will be useful to real users, and whether their quality can match or surpass their manually-produced predecessors. The goal of this paper is to introduce an exploratory search interface called ImageSieve, which shares many features with traditional faceted browsing, but can function without the use of traditional faceted metadata. ImageSieve uses automatically extracted and classified named entities, which play important roles in many domains (such as news collections, image archives, etc.). We describe one specific application of ImageSieve for image search. Here, named entities extracted from the descriptions of the retrieved images are used to organize a faceted browsing interface, which then helps users to make sense of and further explore the retrieved images. The results of a user study of ImageSieve demonstrate that a faceted search system based on named entities can help users explore large collections and find relevant information more effectively
A Diagram Is Worth A Dozen Images
Diagrams are common tools for representing complex concepts, relationships
and events, often when it would be difficult to portray the same information
with natural images. Understanding natural images has been extensively studied
in computer vision, while diagram understanding has received little attention.
In this paper, we study the problem of diagram interpretation and reasoning,
the challenging task of identifying the structure of a diagram and the
semantics of its constituents and their relationships. We introduce Diagram
Parse Graphs (DPG) as our representation to model the structure of diagrams. We
define syntactic parsing of diagrams as learning to infer DPGs for diagrams and
study semantic interpretation and reasoning of diagrams in the context of
diagram question answering. We devise an LSTM-based method for syntactic
parsing of diagrams and introduce a DPG-based attention model for diagram
question answering. We compile a new dataset of diagrams with exhaustive
annotations of constituents and relationships for over 5,000 diagrams and
15,000 questions and answers. Our results show the significance of our models
for syntactic parsing and question answering in diagrams using DPGs

Applications of Machine Learning to Threat Intelligence, Intrusion Detection and Malware
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are emerging technologies with applications to many fields. This paper is a survey of use cases of ML for threat intelligence, intrusion detection, and malware analysis and detection. Threat intelligence, especially attack attribution, can benefit from the use of ML classification. False positives from rule-based intrusion detection systems can be reduced with the use of ML models. Malware analysis and classification can be made easier by developing ML frameworks to distill similarities between the malicious programs. Adversarial machine learning will also be discussed, because while ML can be used to solve problems or reduce analyst workload, it also introduces new attack surfaces
