    Psychological elements explaining the consumer's adoption and use of a website recommendation system: A theoretical framework proposal

    The purpose of this paper is to understand, with an emphasis on the psychological perspective of the research problem, the consumer's adoption and use of a certain web site recommendation system as well as the main psychological outcomes involved. The approach takes the form of theoretical modelling. Findings: A conceptual model is proposed and discussed. A total of 20 research propositions are theoretically analyzed and justified. Research limitations/implications: The theoretical discussion developed here is not empirically validated. This represents an opportunity for future research. Practical implications: The ideas extracted from the discussion of the conceptual model should be a help for recommendation systems designers and web site managers, so that they may be more aware, when working with such systems, of the psychological process consumers undergo when interacting with them. In this regard, numerous practical reflections and suggestions are presented

    Enhancing shopping experiences in smart retailing

    The retailing market has undergone a paradigm-shift in the last decades, departing from its traditional form of shopping in brick-and-mortar stores towards online shopping and the establishment of shopping malls. As a result, “small” independent retailers operating in urban environments have suffered a substantial reduction of their turnover. This situation could be presumably reversed if retailers were to establish business “alliances” targeting economies of scale and engage themselves in providing innovative digital services. The SMARTBUY ecosystem realizes the concept of a “distributed shopping mall”, which allows retailers to join forces and unite in a large commercial coalition that generates added value for both retailers and customers. Along this line, the SMARTBUY ecosystem offers several novel features: (i) inventory management of centralized products and services, (ii) geo-located marketing of products and services, (iii) location-based search for products offered by neighboring retailers, and (iv) personalized recommendations for purchasing products derived by an innovative recommendation system. SMARTBUY materializes a blended retailing paradigm which combines the benefits of online shopping with the attractiveness of traditional shopping in brick-and-mortar stores. This article provides an overview of the main architectural components and functional aspects of the SMARTBUY ecosystem. Then, it reports the main findings derived from a 12 months-long pilot execution of SMARTBUY across four European cities and discusses the key technology acceptance factors when deploying alike business alliances

    Evolving Loyalty Programs- Merging Classic Loyalty with New Technology

    Thesis purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to determine how a technolo-gically enhanced shopping tool, synergizing eCRM tech-niques with personalized promotion at the point-of-sale, can increase customer loyalty by considering perceptions of current grocery retailer loyalty programs in Sweden. Methodology: An exploratory research was undertaken in the light of a qualitative method collecting primary data through focus group interviews. Theoretical perspective: The major considerations regarding theoretical aspects, for this thesis, can be addressed by Behavioral/Attitudinal loyalty and Relevance of Promotion. Empirical data: The empirical data, in regards to primary data, was ga-thered based on four focus group interviews. Conclusion: The conclusions of the thesis imply, that in order to make a loyalty program successful, it needs to firstly be conven-ient for the customer; easy to join, and provide an easy and time efficient display at the point-of-sale. Secondly, it has to be relevant/meaningful in terms of cash-back, promotion and have additional functions such as life-style profiles which customers can use. Thirdly, it needs to be inspiring; through recipes on the display and giving recommendations based on other customers with similar purchase habits. Finally, the program needs to address ethical concerns; how the data is used and by whom

    A framework for personalized dynamic cross-selling in e-commerce retailing

    Cross-selling and product bundling are prevalent strategies in the retail sector. Instead of static bundling offers, i.e. giving the same offer to everyone, personalized dynamic cross-selling generates targeted bundle offers and can help maximize revenues and profits. In resolving the two basic problems of dynamic cross-selling, which involves selecting the right complementary products and optimizing the discount, the issue of computational complexity becomes central as the customer base and length of the product list grows. Traditional recommender systems are built upon simple collaborative filtering techniques, which exploit the informational cues gained from users in the form of product ratings and rating differences across users. The retail setting differs in that there are only records of transactions (in period X, customer Y purchased product Z). Instead of a range of explicit rating scores, transactions form binary datasets; 1-purchased and 0-not-purchased. This makes it a one-class collaborative filtering (OCCF) problem. Notwithstanding the existence of wider application domains of such an OCCF problem, very little work has been done in the retail setting. This research addresses this gap by developing an effective framework for dynamic cross-selling for online retailing. In the first part of the research, we propose an effective yet intuitive approach to integrate temporal information regarding a product\u27s lifecycle (i.e., the non-stationary nature of the sales history) in the form of a weight component into latent-factor-based OCCF models, improving the quality of personalized product recommendations. To improve the scalability of large product catalogs with transaction sparsity typical in online retailing, the approach relies on product catalog hierarchy and segments (rather than individual SKUs) for collaborative filtering. In the second part of the work, we propose effective bundle discount policies, which estimate a specific customer\u27s interest in potential cross-selling products (identified using the proposed OCCF methods) and calibrate the discount to strike an effective balance between the probability of the offer acceptance and the size of the discount. We also developed a highly effective simulation platform for generation of e-retailer transactions under various settings and test and validate the proposed methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to address the topic of real-time personalized dynamic cross-selling with discounting. The proposed techniques are applicable to cross-selling, up-selling, and personalized and targeted selling within the e-retail business domain. Through extensive analysis of various market scenario setups, we also provide a number of managerial insights on the performance of cross-selling strategies
