    Older adults have traditionally been the age cohort most resistant to the adoption of technology, making aging in place difficult and frequently expensive. But recent advances in technology - and those just on the horizon - have the potential to transform the ability to age in place by making senior healthcare both safer and more connected. Such technology can enable healthcare professionals to monitor their charges in real time, respond quickly to healthcare emergencies, make healthcare consultations safer and less onerous for both patients and healthcare workers, assist elders with physical therapy, connect older adults to family and friends, and provide entertainment and learning opportunities for seniors. It is now even possible for older adults in rural areas to receive remote surgery from world class surgeons. The arrival of COVID-19 forced older adults into isolation, severely limiting contact with healthcare providers, family and friends. But COVID-19 also accelerated the adoption of many of the trends already extant, incentivizing older adults and healthcare providers to adopt new technologies much more rapidly than ever before.     A Racial Impact Analysis of SB 30: Medicaid Expansion

    Virginia is the second worst state in providing Medicaid to its citizens. The focus of this report is to provide a racial equity impact analysis of Senate Bill (SB) 30, the Senate legislative vehicle for the appropriations of the budget submitted by the Governor of Virginia for fiscal years 2015 and 2016. SB 30 included a provision called “Marketplace Virginia” as an alternative to traditional Medicaid expansion in Virginia. This compromise bill would have covered an estimated 430,000 Virginians who fall in the Medicaid coverage gap by assisting them in purchasing private insurance. This report provides a racial equity impact analysis of the failure of the Virginia General Assembly to pass SB 30. The racial and ethnic impact of this proposed, but failed, legislation is important because minorities in Virginia disproportionately face disparities in health care access and quality. This racial impact analysis captures and reports the potential impact of this legislation by race in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The primary recommendation includesraising eligibility requirements to a minimum of 100 percent of the federal poverty level. Virginia’s current eligibility requirements are so strict that although it is ranked 7th in per capita personal income, Virginia ranked 43rd in Medicaid enrollment as a proportion of the state’s population and 47th in per capita Medicaid spending

    Innovative Strategies to Finance and Deliver Long-term Care

    Policymakers have long tried and failed to solve the vexing problem of long-term care insurance. The federal Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act, a voluntary, publicly administered long-term care (LTC) insurance program, was repealed in 2013, and the problem has gone from bad to worse. The number of private insurers offering LTC insurance has plummeted from over 100 in 2002, to about a dozen today. While some of this is due to consolidation, the larger force driving the exit is lack of profitability. This paper explores issues surrounding the LTC market including pricing, modeling, and alternative payment models, to better understand the reasons for market failure. We provide a review of innovative approaches used successfully in other industries, which may serve as a model for new ways to finance and deliver long-term care. Based on interviews with thought leaders across multiple disciplines and industries, we identify three of the most promising solutions: public and private long-term care insurance solutions, Medicare expansion solutions, and technology solutions

    A qualitative study of factors affecting mental health amongst low-income working mothers in Bangalore, India.

    BackgroundLow-income urban working mothers face many challenges in their domestic, environmental, and working conditions that may affect their mental health. In India, a high prevalence of mental health disorders has been recorded in young women, but there has been little research to examine the factors that affect their mental health at home and work.MethodsThrough a primarily qualitative approach, we studied the relationship between work, caring for family, spousal support, stress relief strategies and mental health amongst forty eight low-income working mothers residing in urban slums across Bangalore, India. Participants were construction workers, domestic workers, factory workers and fruit and vegetable street vendors. Qualitative data analysis themes included state of mental health, factors that affected mental health positively or negatively, manifestations and consequences of stress and depression, and stress mitigators.ResultsEven in our small sample of women, we found evidence of extreme depression, including suicidal ideation and attempted suicide. Women who have an alcoholic and/or abusive husband, experience intimate partner violence, are raising children with special needs, and lack adequate support for child care appear to be more susceptible to severe and prolonged periods of depression and suicide attempts. Factors that pointed towards reduced anxiety and depression were social support from family, friends and colleagues and fulfilment from work.ConclusionThis qualitative study raises concerns that low-income working mothers in urban areas in India are at high risk for depression, and identifies common factors that create and mitigate stress in this population group. We discuss implications of the findings for supporting the mental health of urban working women in the Indian context. The development of the national mental health policy in India and its subsequent implementation should draw on existing research documenting factors associated with negative mental health amongst specific population groups in order to ensure greater impact

    Artificial intelligence\u27s influence on human lives has captured the attention of healthcare professionals around the globe. There is high optimism for healthcare transformation for better and more efficient care delivery using technology in a highly complex work environment. Because of machine-learning models, predicting the likelihood of harm, such as a fall, is possible. Artificial intelligence (AI) calculations create predictive analytics that can be an objective mediator between the patients\u27 clinical presentation and the nurse\u27s judgment. Further, standardization of documentation is made possible because of the technology behind AI. Information models create a clinical support system that guides nurses in preventing falls. The potential of improving documentation efficiencies and preventing documentation burden with AI can impact the partnership between technology and nursing. While technology has a great potential to improve the nurses\u27 workflow, there are challenges with the nurses\u27 acceptance of the use of AI. Locsin\u27s Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing theory demonstrated the simultaneity paradigm that shows the relationship between nursing care and technology working side by side to deliver the best possible patient outcomes. Nursing professionals who understand AI\u27s benefits, challenges, and potentials are instrumental in leading the workforce in collaborating, designing, integrating, and implementing technology into practice
