    Campus Services to Support Historians

    Get PDF
As the environment in which humanities scholars work continues to evolve rapidly, the set of support services that will best enable innovative scholarship also changes. But too often, the support services made available to scholars are defined by the traditional core competencies of the service provider rather than by the needs of scholars. In this project, we will take a scholar-centric approach to understanding the information service needs of scholars in the field of history, seeking both to identify concrete needs for new information services and to model an approach to service development that evolves with the needs of scholars. This project will probe how scholars in the field of history rely on existing information services, identify concrete opportunities for new support services that would address unmet needs, and serve as a pilot for a broader program of investigation into the future of information services for the humanities

The Sussex occupation and the privatisation of university education

    Get PDF
The outsourcing of campus services is part of a wider process where UK universities are becoming more like businesses. Private companies are moving into the sector, facilitated by government. This is to the detriment of employees, campus community and collective dialogue. Privatisation is spreading to academia, and learning is becoming less about social benefit and the value of education, and more about what’s commercially profitable. This will change the shape and content of the curriculum

    US open access life cycle

    Get PDF
Based on the UK open access life cycle, in the centre circle, we have used the 7 stages of the publishing process as described by Neil Jacobs (Jisc), this is followed by institutional processes – of course not all institutions will have all of these processes up and running, e.g. we don’t all have a CRIS. We then included publisher services that directly impact upon the work of the open access team. We then went on to map above campus services to the life cycle. Finally, we added the 6 sections of OAWAL showing where we think that fits with the life cycle

    Get PDF
The main building of the former Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) designed by Alvar Aalto is part of the cultural heritage in Finland. The building underwent a major renovation in 2011–2015 and has now become an awarded Undergraduate Centre for the modern interdisciplinary education of Aalto University. This paper presents how the architectural masterpiece from the 1960’s was renovated and updated into a modern and accessible university building. Particular attention was paid for entering the building by wheelchairs, prams and pushchairs. The successful renovation was awarded in 2015 by the ‘Esteetön Suomi -palkinto’ (Accessible Finland Award), given every two years as a mark of recognition to activities or locations implementing the principles of accessibility and universal design for all on a broad scale and in a nationally significant way.Peer reviewe
