    An overview of waste materials for sustainable road construction

    Untreated soil typically has low shear strength, swelling behavior, high compressibility and its characteristics were highly dependent on the environment. In general, such problematic soil will lead to severe damages in road construction industry such as bearing capacity failure, slope instability, and excessive settlement. Agricultural waste, construction waste, and municipal waste have recently gained considerable attention as a sustainable material in road construction application due to its availability, environmental friendly and low-cost materials. Therefore in this review, randomly distributed fiber reinforced soil and oriented distributed fiber reinforced soil will be extensively discussed based on the emerging trend. It further reviewed the feasibility of using waste materials as a reinforcement material for the road construction industry. The review also attempts to evaluate and compare the engineering properties of soil and sustainable materials in order to enhance soil performance as well as help to improve the environment affected by growing waste materials

    Dynamic Modeling, Design and Control of Wire-Borne Underactuated Brachiating Robots: Theory and Application

    The ability of mobile robots to locomote safely in unstructured environments will be a cornerstone of robotics of the future. Introducing robots into fully unstructured environments is known to be a notoriously difficult problem in the robotics field. As a result, many of today's mobile robots are confined to prepared level surfaces in laboratory settings or relatively controlled environments only. One avenue for deploying mobile robots into unstructured settings is to utilize elevated wire networks. The research conducted under this thesis lays the groundwork for developing a new class of wire-borne underactuated robots that employs brachiation -- swinging like an ape -- as a means of locomotion on flexible cables. Executing safe brachiation maneuvers with a cable-suspended underactuated robot is a challenging problem due to the complications induced by the cable dynamics and vibrations. This thesis studies, from concept through experiments, the dynamic modeling techniques and control algorithms for wire-borne underactuated brachiating robots, to develop advanced locomotion strategies that enable the robots to perform energy-efficient and robust brachiation motions on flexible cables. High-fidelity and approximate dynamic models are derived for the robot-cable system, which provide the ability to model the interactions between the cable and the robot and to include the flexible cable dynamics in the control design. An optimal trajectory generation framework is presented in which the flexible cable dynamics are explicitly accounted for when designing the optimal swing trajectories. By employing a variety of control-theoretic methods such as robust and adaptive estimation, control Lyapunov and barrier functions, semidefinite programming and sum-of-squares optimization, a set of closed-loop control algorithms are proposed. A novel hardware brachiating robot design and embodiment are presented, which incorporate unique mechanical design features and provide a reliable testbed for experimental validation of the wire-borne underactuated brachiating robots. Extensive simulation results and hardware experiments demonstrate that the proposed multi-body dynamic models, trajectory optimization frameworks, and feedback control algorithms prove highly useful in real world settings and achieve reliable brachiation performance in the presence of uncertainties, disturbances, actuator limits and safety constraints.Ph.D

It had to overcome significant challenges to make it reusable. Perhaps the greatest challenges were the main engines and the Thermal Protection System. The program has seen terrible tragedy in its 3 decades of operation, yet it has also seen marvelous success. One of the most notable successes is the Hubble Space Telescope, a program that would have been a failure without the shuttle's capability to rendezvous, capture, repair, as well as upgrade. Now Hubble is a shining example of success admired by people around the world. As the program comes to a close, it is important to capture the legacy of the shuttle for future generations. That is what "Wings In Orbit" does for space fans, students, engineers, and scientists. This book, written by the men and women who made the program possible, will serve as an excellent reference for building future space vehicles. We are proud to have played a small part in making it happen.     NASA Historical Data Book

    In 1973, NASA published the first volume of the NASA Historical Data Book, a hefty tome containing mostly tabular data on the resources of the space agency between 1958 and 1968. There, broken into detailed tables, were the facts and figures associated with the budget, facilities, procurement, installations, and personnel of NASA during that formative decade. In 1988, NASA reissued that first volume of the data book and added two additional volumes on the agency's programs and projects, one each for 1958-1968 and 1969-1978. NASA published a fourth volume in 1994 that addressed NASA resources for the period between 1969 and 1978. This fifth volume of the NASA Historical Data Book is a continuation of those earlier efforts. This fundamental reference tool presents information, much of it statistical, documenting the development of four critical areas of NASA responsibility for the period between 1979 and 1988. This volume includes detailed information on the development and operation of launch systems, space transportation, human spaceflight, and space science during this era. As such, it contains in-depth statistical information about the early Space Shuttle program through the return to flight in 1988, the early efforts to build a space station, the development of new launch systems, and the launching of seventeen space science missions. A companion volume will appear late in 1999, documenting the space applications, support operations, aeronautics, and resources aspects of NASA during the period between 1979 and 1988. NASA began its operations as the nation's civilian space agency in 1958 following the passage of the National Aeronautics and Space Act. It succeeded the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The new organization was charged with preserving the role of the United States "as a leader in aeronautical and space science and technology" and in its application, with expanding our knowledge of the Earth's atmosphere and space, and with exploring flight both within and outside the atmosphere. By the 1980s, NASA had established itself as an agency with considerable achievements on record. The decade was marked by the inauguration of the Space Shuttle flights and haunted by the 1986 Challenger accident that temporarily halted the program. The agency also enjoyed the strong support of President Ronald Reagan, who enthusiastically announced the start of both the Space Station program and the National Aerospace Plane program
