    Unification via intermediate symmetry breaking scales with the quartification gauge group

    The idea of quark-lepton universality at high energies has been introduced as a natural extension to the standard model. This is achieved by endowing leptons with new degrees of freedom -- leptonic colour, an analogue of the familiar quark colour. Grand and partially unified models which utilise this new gauge symmetry SU(3)_\ell have been proposed in the context of the quartification gauge group SU(3)^4. Phenomenologically successful gauge coupling constant unification without supersymmetry has been demonstrated for cases where the symmetry breaking leaves a residual SU(2)_\ell unbroken. Though attractive, these schemes either incorporate ad hoc discrete symmetries and non-renormalisable mass terms, or achieve only partial unification. We show that grand unified models can be constructed where the quartification group can be broken fully [i.e. no residual SU(2)_\ell] to the standard model gauge group without requiring additional discrete symmetries or higher dimension operators. These models also automatically have suppressed nonzero neutrino masses. We perform a systematic analysis of the renormalisation-group equations for all possible symmetry breaking routes from SU(3)^4 --> SU(3)_q x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y. This analysis indicates that gauge coupling unification can be achieved for several different symmetry breaking patterns and we outline the requirements that each gives on the unification scale. We also show that the unification scenarios of those models which leave a residual SU(2)_\ell symmetry are not unique. In both symmetry breaking cases, some of the scenarios require new physics at the TeV scale, while others do not allow for new TeV phenomenology in the fermionic sector.Comment: 25 page

    Impact on signal integrity of interconnect variabilities

    In this paper, literature results on the statistical simulation of lossy and dispersive interconnect networks with uncertain physical properties are extended to general nonlinear circuits. The approach is based on the expansion of circuit voltages and currents into polynomial chaos approximations. The derivation of deterministic circuit equivalents for nonlinear components allows to retrieve the unknown expansion coefficients with a single circuit simulation, that can be carried out via standard SPICE-type solvers. These coefficients provide direct statistical information. The methodology allows the inclusion of arbitrary nonlinear elements and is validated via transmission-line networks terminated by diodes and driven by inverter

    Magnetic Suspension and Balance Systems: A Comprehensive, Annotated Bibliography

    This bibliography contains 301 entries. Results are reported of recent studies aimed at increasing the research capabilities of magnetic suspension and balance systems; e.g., increasing force and torque capability, increasing angle of attack capability, and increasing overall system reliability. The problem is addressed of scaling from the relatively small size of existing systems to much larger sizes. The purpose of the bibliography is to provide an up-to-date list of publications that might be helpful to persons interested in magnetic suspension and balance systems for use in wind tunnels. The arrangement is generally chronological by date of presentation. However, papers presented at conferences or meetings are placed under dates of presentation. The numbers assigned to many of the citations have been changed from those used in the previous bibliography. This has been done in order to allow outdated citations to be removed and some recently discovered older works to be included in their proper chronological order. Author, source, and subject indexes are included in order to increase the usefulness of this compilation

    Optimal configuration of a resource-on-demand 802.11 WLAN with non-zero start-up times

    Resource on Demand in 802.11 Wireless LANs is receiving an increasing attention, with its feasibility already proved in practice and some initial analytical models available. However, while these models have assumed that access points (APs) start up in zero time, experimentation has showed that this is hardly the case. In this work, we provide a new model to account for this time in the simple case, of a WLAN formed by two APs where the second AP is switched on/off dynamically to adapt to the traffic load and reduce the overall power consumption, and show that it significantly alters the results when compared to the zero start-up time case, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Our findings show that having a non-zero start up time modifies significantly the trade-offs between power consumption and performance that appears on Resource on Demand solutions. Finally, we propose an algorithm to optimize the energy consumption of the network while guaranteeing a given performance bound.The work of J.     Limits on the Doppler factor in relativistic jets by means of gamma-ray observations

    A new, simple and potentially useful method for constraining the kinematical parameters of relativistic jets based on gamma ray spectral measurements of Active Galaxies is presented. The application of this method to the Quasar 3C273 leads to a value of the Doppler factor of 3 to 4. This corresponds to jet parameters of mu 2 and theta 15 deg in good agreement with the values estimated independently from radio observations of superluminal motion. For the particular case of 3C273, the results are also compared to those given by a similar technique based on the comparison of the X-ray observational data with the synchrotron self Compton prediction from radio measurements. The application of the proposed technique to a significant sample of active galaxies as a result of future gamma ray surveys of the sky is briefly discussed, particularly with respect to possible ways to constrain the cosmological constants H sub o and q sub o
