    The purpose of this paper is to examine the relevance hypothesis of Business Mathematics and Secretarial Education programme in Colleges of Educations, Polytechnics and Universities. To achieve the objectives of this paper, relevant secondary data was collected from books, magazines and journals. The knowledge of Business Mathematics is important to the secretary to perform relevant functions in organisations. Hence, the paper observed that Business Mathematics provides the necessary logical analysis, hence very relevant in the secretarial profession.  The paper therefore, concludes that the knowledge of Business Mathematics is important for secretarial administration students. This is because secretaries perform routine duties with great speed, and helps in enhancing the efficiency of jobs. Secretaries has been adjudged to be versatile memory bank of the organisation, information reservoir to merits this names actually means to have the knowledge of all courses that will help them to discharge their duties in the most professional manner, knowledge in Business Mathematics cannot be ruled out as one of the major courses students in the secretarial education programme must understand and use to assist organizations needs.     Instruction Methods for Solving Word Problems in Mathematics Education

    The purpose of this paper is to report on three methodologies that I practise in business mathematics lectures. In business mathematics, a problem to find is more important than a problem to prove. Thus, my target is a problem to find. The first methodology is to solve a problem visually to the extent possible, not only using existing algebraic methods but also a visual method that includes mathematical software, such as Maple and Mathematica. In business mathematics today, problem solving using the visual approach is more important than that using the algebraic approach because business requires the speedy modeling of the target and prompt analysis of the model. Thus we can say that the visual solution skill is also required as digital literacy in the business mathematics field. Therefore, lecturers are recommended to take greater advantage of this new visual approach. The second methodology is to practise Polya’s famous heuristics, described in his book, “How to Solve It”. It is particularly important for students to first write down the given data and the unknown to understand a word problem. The third methodology is to have students construct rule databases in their heads to make a deduction. Using deduction, they can easily find the connection between the given data and the unknown to devise a solution plan. Based on my experience with deductive database system construction, I think that the procedures used in a deductive system can be applied to students’ solution procedures. In my lectures, I repeatedly teach students deductive patterns. Thinking patterns using these three methodologies are helpful in cultivating students’ ability to solve future problems by themselves

    A MATLAB-Aided Method For Teaching Calculus-Based Business Mathematics

    MATLAB is a powerful package for numerical computation. MATLAB contains a rich pool of mathematical functions and provides flexible plotting functions for illustrating mathematical solutions. The course of calculus-based business mathematics consists of two major topics: 1) derivative and its applications in business; and 2) integration and its applications in business. Both topics involve various mathematical functions that may scare many business students. Fortunately, MATLAB provides an easy solution to handling the derivative and integration of various mathematical functions. With the help of MATLAB, all elementary formulas for derivative and integration in the textbooks of calculus-based business mathematics become less important to those students who have difficulty in learning and using mathematical formulas to find solutions to quantitative business problems. With the wide availability of various business data bases including the MATLAB package in the Samuel S. Bergami, Jr. Learning Center for Finance and Technology at the University of New Haven, in this paper, we illustrate how to use MATLAB to help students’ learning of calculus-based business mathematics and apply the calculus principles to find solutions to real quantitative business problems. Our experience shows that MATLAB greatly saves students’ efforts in learning difficult and pure calculus formulas and it is easy for business students to acquire the basic internal functions in using MATLAB

    AbstractCharacter is the essence of every human life. The character of a mature person will have an impact on the preparation of a mature self that is ready to deal with all the challenges and conflicts in life. Character can be developed one of them through education from early childhood to college level. All universities in Indonesia carry out the government's mission to develop character education as a continuation of the development of character education in schools, as well as at Pamulang University. Character education should be planned by formulating in the curriculum, applying it with educational methods, and practiced in the learning process. Economics and Business Mathematics course in D3 Accounting Study Program is also required to be able to integrate character education in the learning process.
