OpenLearn and knowledge maps for language learning
This chapter presents new methodologies designed to facilitate language acquisition in open learning communities via open educational resources and knowledge mapping. It specifically focuses on the OpenLearn project developed by the Open University. This offers a virtual learning environment based on Moodle platform with free educational materials and knowledge media tools such as the instant messaging MSG, the video webconference FlashMeeting and the knowledge mapping software tool Compendium. In this work, these technologies and mapping techniques are introduced in order to promote open language learning. Ways in which teachers and students can make use of these OpenLearn tools and resources are discussed and some benefits fully described
Multi-Paradigm Reasoning for Access to Heterogeneous GIS
Accessing and querying geographical data in a uniform way has become easier in recent years. Emerging standards like WFS turn
the web into a geospatial web services enabled place. Mediation
architectures like VirGIS overcome syntactical and semantical heterogeneity
between several distributed sources. On mobile devices,
however, this kind of solution is not suitable, due to limitations,
mostly regarding bandwidth, computation power, and available storage
space. The aim of this paper is to present a solution for providing
powerful reasoning mechanisms accessible from mobile applications
and involving data from several heterogeneous sources.
By adapting contents to time and location, mobile web information
systems can not only increase the value and suitability of the
service itself, but can substantially reduce the amount of data delivered
to users. Because many problems pertain to infrastructures
and transportation in general and to way finding in particular, one
cornerstone of the architecture is higher level reasoning on graph
networks with the Multi-Paradigm Location Language MPLL. A
mediation architecture is used as a âgraph providerâ in order to
transfer the load of computation to the best suited component â
graph construction and transformation for example being heavy on
resources. Reasoning in general can be conducted either near the
âsourceâ or near the end user, depending on the specific use case.
The concepts underlying the proposal described in this paper are
illustrated by a typical and concrete scenario for web applications

Supporting location-based inquiry learning across school, field and home contexts
Here we explore how technology can be applied to support inquiry learning spanning a range of contexts. The development process of a location-based inquiry learning toolset is presented for a secondary school GCSE Geography project. The design framework used and the process of participatory development is discussed with regard to the co-development of the activities and tools involved in an inquiry project. The lessons learned relate to the formation of a motivational context for the inquiry; the role of personal data collection in the field; the use of bridging representations across field and classroom activities; and the development of flexible, re-usable tools to support and bridge sequences of activities
TGVizTab: An ontology visualisation extension for Protégé
Ontologies are gaining a lot of interest and many are being developed to provide a variety of knowledge services. There is an increasing need for tools to graphically and in-teractively visualise such modelling structures to enhance their clarification, verification and analysis. Protégé 2000 is one of the most popular ontology modelling tools currently available. This paper introduces TGVizTab; a new Protégé plugin based on TouchGraph technology to graphically visualise Protégé?s ontologies
