    Assisting the hypertext authoring process with topology metrics and information retrieval

    As more and more documents become available in electronic format, the use of hypertext systems is becoming more common as a way to organise information. However as the size of a hypertext database grows, the ‘lost in hyperspace’ problem may limit efficient and meaningful usage of hypertext systems. In order to increase local coherence at net level, authors should limit 'the fragmentation characteristics of hypertext’. These characteristics seem to be endemic to hyperdocuments and result from the segmentation of information into disjointed nodes. Fragmentation may result in a lack of interpretative context and thus lead to the impression that the hyper-document is an aggregation of loosely linked pieces of information rather then a coherent whole. In an attempt to understand a new node, readers try to extract information and relate it in context to other nodes that they have viewed. In this thesis we describe an application which incorporates an apprentice link editor to suggest candidate information/hypertext links for the hypertext author to validate. These ‘suggestions’ use node-to-node comparison and metrics to present the author with the most appropriate choices in adding a new node to the hypertext they are authoring. Although this project is intended to provide a hypertext author with the tools needed to enhance the construction of a large hypertext, the assumption of trusting the author, and the notion that the best quality control tool is a skilled author is never forgotten

    Hypermedia design, as any other design activity, may be observed according to two points of view: methods which suggest milestones to guide the designer's work and process which concerns the actual detailed behavior of the designer at work. Cognitive studies assess that mental processes involved in any design process show widely shared human characteristics regardless to the used design method. Thereby, they provide general keys to help designers. Thus, a hypertext design environment should equally consider the two dimensions of a hypertext design activity, in particular it should support the natural design process specificities, mainly the incremental and opportunist aspects. The paper focuses on the hypertext design as a computer supported human activity. It examines what is general both in the design methods and in the design process of hypertexts in order to determine which general features are helpful to designers. This analysis has raised from the observation of the behavior of MacWeb users during design tasks. It is related to sound and well known results in cognitive science. The paper also describes how the proposed features are implemented in the MacWeb system.Information Systems Working Papers Serie

PLOS ONE. 2018;13(11): e0207536.In this paper, we study the limit of compactness which is a graph index originally introduced for measuring structural characteristics of hypermedia. Applying compactness to large scale small-world graphs [1] observed its limit behaviour to be equal 1. The striking question concerning this finding was whether this limit behaviour resulted from the specifics of small-world graphs or was simply an artefact. In this paper, we determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for any sequence of connected graphs resulting in a limit value of C_B = 1 which can be generalized with some consideration for the case of disconnected graph classes (Theorem 3). This result can be applied to many well-known classes of connected graphs. Here, we illustrate it by considering four examples. In fact, our proof-theoretical approach allows for quickly obtaining the limit value of compactness for many graph classes sparing computational costs

    Using problem-centered learning to foster argumentation in introductory sociology

    This mixed methods case study explored the efficacy of a problem-based learning environment and three different instructional methods designed to foster argumentation in an introductory sociology course. While no statistically significant differences were found in the overall assignment scores among the three treatment groups, there were significant differences in the effort they expended to achieve those scores, suggesting that a treatment in which students were instructed to generate counter-arguments to a provided model essay was most efficient while a treatment in which students were guided to construct an argument step-by-step encouraged more time-on-task
