Brouwer Fixed Point Theorem for Simplexes

In this article we prove the Brouwer fixed point theorem for an arbitrary simplex which is the convex hull of its n + 1 affinely indepedent vertices of εn. First we introduce the Lebesgue number, which for an arbitrary open cover of a compact metric space M is a positive real number so that any ball of about such radius must be completely contained in a member of the cover. Then we introduce the notion of a bounded simplicial complex and the diameter of a bounded simplicial complex. We also prove the estimation of diameter decrease which is connected with the barycentric subdivision. Finally, we prove the Brouwer fixed point theorem and compute the small inductive dimension of εn. Topologic proofs of some combinatorial theorems

AbstractDuring the last 50 years several combinatorial theorems have been proved which have provided elegant proofs of a number of fundamental results in topology. These include Sperner's Lemma, Tucker's Lemma, and Kuhn's Cubical Sperner Lemma, which have been applied to the Brouwer Fixed Point Theorem, as well as a number of results involving antipodal properties of continuous mappings. In this paper the reverse process is used to find topologic proofs of several combinatorial results. In response to several questions raised by Kuhn, a proof of Sperner's Lemma from the Brouwer Fixed Point Theorem is given, as is a proof of Tucker's Lemma from a topologic non-existence theorem for certain continuous mappings of an n-ball to its boundary. In the final section, a new labeling theorem for the n-cube, which is equivalent to Tucker's Lemma, is presented, and is proved by using topologic methods

Remarks on the entropy of 3-manifolds

We give a simple combinatoric proof of an exponential upper bound on the number of distinct 3-manifolds that can be constructed by successively identifying nearest neighbour pairs of triangles in the boundary of a simplicial 3-ball and show that all closed simplicial manifolds that can be constructed in this manner are homeomorphic to S3S^3. We discuss the problem of proving that all 3-dimensional simplicial spheres can be obtained by this construction and give an example of a simplicial 3-ball whose boundary triangles can be identified pairwise such that no triangle is identified with any of its neighbours and the resulting 3-dimensional simplicial complex is a simply connected 3-manifold.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures available from author
