Wideband and UWB antennas for wireless applications. A comprehensive review

    Get PDF
A comprehensive review concerning the geometry, the manufacturing technologies, the materials, and the numerical techniques, adopted for the analysis and design of wideband and ultrawideband (UWB) antennas for wireless applications, is presented. Planar, printed, dielectric, and wearable antennas, achievable on laminate (rigid and flexible), and textile dielectric substrates are taken into account. The performances of small, low-profile, and dielectric resonator antennas are illustrated paying particular attention to the application areas concerning portable devices (mobile phones, tablets, glasses, laptops, wearable computers, etc.) and radio base stations. This information provides a guidance to the selection of the different antenna geometries in terms of bandwidth, gain, field polarization, time-domain response, dimensions, and materials useful for their realization and integration in modern communication systems

The eleven antenna: a compact low-profile decade bandwidth dual polarized feed for reflector antennas

    Get PDF
A novel dual polarized ultrawide-band (UWB) feed with a decade bandwidth is presented for use in both single and dual reflector antennas. The feed has nearly constant beam width and 11 dBi directivity over at least a decade bandwidth. The feed gives an aperture efficiency of the reflector of 66% or better over a decade bandwidth when the subtended angle toward the sub or main reflector is about 53°, and an overall efficiency better than 47% including mismatch. The return loss is better than 5 dB over a decade bandwidth. The calculated results have been verified with measurements on a linearly polarized lab model. The feed has no balun as it is intended to be integrated with an active 180° balun and receiver. The feed is referred to as the Eleven antenna because its basic configuration is two parallel dipoles 0.5 wavelengths apart and because it can be used over more than a decade bandwidth with 11 dBi directivity. We also believe that 11 dB return loss is achievable in the near future

Study of UHF and VHF Compact Antennas

This thesis presents and describes designs of small antennas that operate in UHF and VHF frequency bands. The proposed antennas are designed for integration into small volumes, therefore low profile, compact size and good radiation properties are the key parameters in this work. A further investigation on miniaturization techniques, as well as the ground plane effects on the general performance, is also made. The main objective is the design of novel compact sized geometries, lightweight and cost efficient, operating in the lower UHF and VHF frequency bands. The groundplane size and the antenna position with respect to it, are two parameters which are investigated and contribute to optimum design performance. Compact solutions are realised in this work based on folded, meander-line and inverted-F geometries providing broadband operation and omnidirectional radiation properties. The investigation of broadband properties of a dual band folded monopole led to a controllable frequency-ratio with wide range, operating in the WLAN frequency spectrum. The proposed solution offers high efficiency and gain and stable omnidirectionality across the operating frequency band. The study also deals with planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA) operating in the LTE frequency bands. The two highly efficient broadband antennas provide compactness, gain stability and are fabricated using low-cost materials. By configuring an optimised position of the PIFA on the groundplane, the impedance bandwidth, the gain and the total efficiency can be significantly improved. A more compact solution of a dual band PIFA structure is provided with omnidirectional radiation characteristics and large frequency ratio for machine-to-machine applications. A novel tuneable meander line structure operating over the frequency range of 412 − 475 MHz is designed for integration into smart meter devices. The resonant frequency of this antenna can be tuned using a sliding via connector. A matching stub is introduced into the proposed geometry to improve the impedance matching and to shift the resonant frequency to lower values. This innovative solution overcomes material loading problems when installed on a concrete wall, as well as the S11 characteristic are not impaired with the small sized ground plane. Finally, a dual band meander line folded monopole antenna in the lower UHF and VHF frequency bands is proposed for smart metering and Wireless M-Bus applications. The miniaturization of the proposed solution is based on a double-sided meandering structure which also offers good isolation between the two sections and an easily controlled large frequency-ratio. The introduction of a shunt lumped inductor improves the impedance matching at both frequencies. The antenna despite its compact size offers high total efficiency and gain across the operating frequency bands

An Ultrawideband Dual-Linear Polarization Feed for Solar Microwave Observation

The study of Solar Microwave Bursts (SMB\u27s) emanating from the sun is important from several perspectives. SMB\u27s are well correlated to Coronal Mass Ejections (CME\u27s) and therefore can provide insight into the physics of the sun. SMB\u27s and CME\u27s can interfere with microwave communication systems such as cell phones, satellites, and radar, and can adversely affect the accuracy of the Global Positioning System. Furthermore, CME\u27s can be hazardous to individuals and equipment in earth orbit as well as causing power grid blackouts. The rapid detection of SMB\u27s and their subsequent effect on space weather is a key element of responsibility of the United States Air Force (USAF). Identification of the source eliminates the possibility of intentional jamming or a systems failure. When such a determination is made, warnings can be issued so that measures can be taken such as using different communication frequencies or modes, or to place satellites in a safe mode. Currently the USAF operates the Radio Solar Telescope Network (RSTN) consisting of three parabolic dish antennas each at four locations to continuously observe the sun in the microwave spectrum. The 2.4m RSTN dishes have feeds that are single polarization at four discrete frequencies between 1.4 and 8.8GHz. Expanding the capability of these existing dishes with a single ultrawideband feed to cover 1-10GHz would improve observations, while adding a dual polarization capability could facilitate improved monitoring should there be future developments in spectrum usage. A feed with folded diamond-shaped elements in a damped cavity has been designed and constructed, funded under contract FA9453-09-C-0309 from the USAF Solar Disturbance Prediction Program, with a simulated bandwidth of 0.9 - 12 GHz. Subsequent characterization from 2 - 8 GHz showed good correlation between simulation and measurement, and that the feed meets virtually all performance specifications that were tested
