Design of a miniature permanent-magnet generator and energy storage system
The paper describes a methodology for optimizing the design and performance of a miniature permanent-magnet generator and its associated energy storage system. It combines an analytical field model, a lumped reluctance equivalent magnetic circuit, and an equivalent electrical circuit. Its utility is demonstrated by means of a case study on a 15-mW, 6000-r/min generator, and the analysis techniques are validated by measurements on a prototype system
HAPS Gateway Link in the 5850-7075 MHz and Coexistence with Fixed Satellite Service
Gateway link is essential to connect HAPS platform to terrestrial based networks. This crucial link is incorporated in HAPS fixed service spectrum allocation in considerably high frequencies, renders the link for more attenuations by atmospheric gases, and rain effects, especially when the regional climate is not favorable. However, under the agenda item 1.20 of World Radio Conference-2012 (WRC-12) new HAPS allocation in the 5850-7075 MHz band is proposed. Although, spectrum features are incomparably reliable, on the contrary, Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) uplink transmissions will have signal levels much higher than those in HAPS systems and have the potential for causing interference at the HAPS gateway receiver. In this article a key aspect of co-channel interference phenomena is investigated to facilitate optimum frequency sharing in the band in question. By proposing mitigation techniques and statistical method this generic prediction model enhances the capability of the HAPS spectrum sharing and provides flexibility in spectrum planning for different fixed services

Client-server-based LBS architecture: A novel positioning module for improved positioning performance
Permission to distribute obtained from publisher.This work presents a new efficient positioning module that operates over client-server LBS architectures. The
aim of the proposed module is to fulfil the position information requirements for LBS pedestrian applications
by ensuring the availability of reliable, highly accurate and precise position solutions based on GPS single
frequency (L1) positioning service. The positioning module operates at both LBS architecture sides; the client
(mobile device), and the server (positioning server). At the server side, the positioning module is responsible
for correcting user’s location information based on WADGPS corrections. In addition, at the mobile side,
the positioning module is continually in charge for monitoring the integrity and available of the position
solutions as well as managing the communication with the server. The integrity monitoring was based on
EGNOS integrity methods. A prototype of the proposed module was developed and used in experimental trials
to evaluate the efficiency of the module in terms of the achieved positioning performance. The positioning
module was capable of achieving a horizontal accuracy of less than 2 meters with a 95% confidence level
with integrity improvement of more than 30% from existing GPS/EGNOS services

The recognition performance was assessed against two different video image frame rate variations: 25 and 2 fps. The assessment included a range of objective and subjective criteria. The obtained results show that the effects of the frame rate variations on the performance are statistically insignificant. This paper belongs to the process of development of a novel system for navigation of visually impaired pedestrians. The navigation system includes a remote vision facility, and the visual recognition of the environmental hazards by the sighted human guide is a basic activity in aiding the visually impaired user of the system in mobility
A New Classification Of UK Local Authorities Using 2001 Census Key Statistics
The 2001 Census has been successfully administered and the Census Organisations are currently engaged in processing the returns. A very large and rich dataset will be produced for the 58,789,194 people of the UK. The Census Area Statistics, for example, delivers 190 tables containing about 6 thousand unique counts relating to the characteristics of the UK population, for output areas and all higher geographies. This paper represents the first results of a project that aims to develop, in collaboration with the Office for National Statistics, a set of general purpose classifications at different geographic scales, including households, neighbourhoods, wards, local authorities and to link the classifications at different levels together. The paper reports on the methods used and results of a classification of the UK’s 434 Local Authorities, using the Key Statistics released in February 2003. This initial classification and description of methods will feed into the ONS/GROS/NISRA project to classify Local Authorities for the whole UK.
