State-of-the-Art and Trends in Scalable Video Compression with Wavelet Based Approaches
3noScalable Video Coding (SVC) differs form traditional single point approaches mainly because it allows to encode in a unique bit stream several working points corresponding to different quality, picture size and frame rate. This work describes the current state-of-the-art in SVC, focusing on wavelet based motion-compensated approaches (WSVC). It reviews individual components that have been designed to address the problem over the years and how such components are typically combined to achieve meaningful WSVC architectures. Coding schemes which mainly differ from the space-time order in which the wavelet transforms operate are here compared, discussing strengths and weaknesses of the resulting implementations. An evaluation of the achievable coding performances is provided considering the reference architectures studied and developed by ISO/MPEG in its exploration on WSVC. The paper also attempts to draw a list of major differences between wavelet based solutions and the SVC standard jointly targeted by ITU and ISO/MPEG. A major emphasis is devoted to a promising WSVC solution, named STP-tool, which presents architectural similarities with respect to the SVC standard. The paper ends drawing some evolution trends for WSVC systems and giving insights on video coding applications which could benefit by a wavelet based approach.partially_openpartially_openADAMI N; SIGNORONI. Recent Advances in Signal Processing
The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity
Novel Motion Anchoring Strategies for Wavelet-based Highly Scalable Video Compression
This thesis investigates new motion anchoring strategies that are targeted at wavelet-based highly scalable video compression (WSVC). We depart from two practices that are deeply ingrained in existing video compression systems. Instead of the commonly used block motion, which has poor scalability attributes, we employ piecewise-smooth motion together with a highly scalable motion boundary description. The combination of this more “physical” motion description together with motion discontinuity information allows us to change the conventional strategy of anchoring motion at target frames to anchoring motion at reference frames, which improves motion inference across time.
In the proposed reference-based motion anchoring strategies, motion fields are mapped from reference to target frames, where they serve as prediction references; during this mapping process, disoccluded regions are readily discovered. Observing that motion discontinuities displace with foreground objects, we propose motion-discontinuity driven motion mapping operations that handle traditionally challenging regions around moving objects. The reference-based motion anchoring exposes an intricate connection between temporal frame interpolation (TFI) and video compression. When employed in a compression system, all anchoring strategies explored in this thesis perform TFI once all residual information is quantized to zero at a given temporal level. The interpolation performance is evaluated on both natural and synthetic sequences, where we show favourable comparisons with state-of-the-art TFI schemes.
We explore three reference-based motion anchoring strategies. In the first one, the motion anchoring is “flipped” with respect to a hierarchical B-frame structure. We develop an analytical model to determine the weights of the different spatio-temporal subbands, and assess the suitability and benefits of this reference-based WSVC for (highly scalable) video compression. Reduced motion coding cost and improved frame prediction, especially around moving objects, result in improved rate-distortion performance compared to a target-based WSVC. As the thesis evolves, the motion anchoring is progressively simplified to one where all motion is anchored at one base frame; this central motion organization facilitates the incorporation of higher-order motion models, which improve the prediction performance in regions following motion with non-constant velocity
Mode decision for the H.264/AVC video coding standard
H.264/AVC video coding standard gives us a very promising future for the
field of video broadcasting and communication because of its high coding
efficiency compared with other older video coding standards. However, high
coding efficiency also carries high computational complexity. Fast motion
estimation and fast mode decision are two very useful techniques which can
significantly reduce computational complexity.
This thesis focuses on the field of fast mode decision. The goal of this thesis is
that for very similar RD performance compared with H.264/AVC video coding
standard, we aim to find new fast mode decision techniques which can afford
significant time savings. [Continues.

Novel entropy coding and its application of the compression of 3D image and video signals
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonThe broadcast industry is moving future Digital Television towards Super high resolution TV (4k or 8k) and/or 3D TV. This ultimately will increase the demand on data rate and subsequently the demand for highly efficient codecs. One of the techniques that researchers found it one of the promising technologies in the industry in the next few years is 3D Integral Image and Video due to its simplicity and mimics the reality, independently on viewer aid, one of the challenges of the 3D Integral technology is to improve the compression algorithms to adequate the high resolution and exploit the advantages of the characteristics of this technology. The research scope of this thesis includes designing a novel coding for the 3D Integral image and video compression. Firstly to address the compression of 3D Integral imaging the research proposes novel entropy coding which will be implemented first on 2D traditional images content in order to compare it with the other traditional common standards then will be applied on 3D Integra image and video. This approach seeks to achieve high performance represented by high image quality and low bit rate in association with low computational complexity. Secondly, new algorithm will be proposed in an attempt to improve and develop the transform techniques performance, initially by using a new adaptive 3D-DCT algorithm then by proposing a new hybrid 3D DWT-DCT algorithm via exploiting the advantages of each technique and get rid of the artifact that each technique of them suffers from. Finally, the proposed entropy coding will be further implemented to the 3D integral video in association with another proposed algorithm that based on calculating the motion vector on the average viewpoint for each frame. This approach seeks to minimize the complexity and reduce the speed without affecting the Human Visual System (HVS) performance. Number of block matching techniques will be used to investigate the best block matching technique that is adequate for the new proposed 3D integral video algorithm
