The objective of this dissertation is to develop new fault detection, identification, estimation and control algorithms that will be used to detect winding stator fault, identify the motor parameters and optimally control machine during faulty condition. Quality or proposed algorithms for Fault detection, parameter identification and control under faulty condition will validated through analytical study (Cramer-Rao bound) and simulation. Simulation will be performed for three most applied control schemes: Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID), Direct Torque Control (DTC) and Field Oriented Control (FOC) for Permanent Magnet Machines. New detection schemes forfault detection, isolation and machine parameter identification are presented and analyzed. Different control schemes as PID, DTC, FOC for Control of PM machines have different control loops and therefore it is probable that fault detection and isolation will have different sensitivity. It is very probable that one of these control schemes (PID, DTC or FOC) are more convenient for fault detection and isolation which this dissertation will analyze through computer simulation and, if laboratory condition exist, also running a physical models

In this context, and specifically in relation to the application of these algorithms to the monitoring and diagnosis of electrical machines, the use of stray flux signals is a very interesting alternative to detect the different faults. Likewise, and in relation to the use of biomedical signals, it is of great interest to extract relevant features in actigraphy signals for the identification of patterns that may be associated with a specific pathology. In this thesis, algorithms based on statistical and spectral signal processing have been developed and applied to the detection and diagnosis of failures in electrical machines, as well as to the treatment of actigraphy signals. With the development of the proposed algorithms, it is intended to have a dynamic indication and identification system for detecting the failure or associated pathology that does not depend on parameters or external information that may condition the results, but only rely on the primary information that initially presents the signal to be treated (such as the periodicity, amplitude, frequency and phase of the sample). From the use of the algorithms developed for the detection and diagnosis of failures in electrical machines, based on the statistical and spectral signal processing, it is intended to advance, in relation to the models currently existing, in the identification of failures through the use of stray flux signals. In addition, and on the other hand, through the use of higher order statistics for the extraction of anomalies in actigraphy signals, alternative parameters have been found for the identification of processes that may be related to specific pathologies.Iglesias Martínez, ME. Electric motor condition monitoring can detect anomalies in the motor performance which have the potential to result in unexpected failure and financial loss. This study examines different fault detection and diagnosis approaches in induction motors and is presented in six chapters. First, an anomaly technique or outlier detection is applied to increase the accuracy of detecting broken rotor bars. It is shown how the proposed method can significantly improve network reliability by using one-class classification technique. Then, ensemble-based anomaly detection is utilized to compare different methods in ensemble learning in detection of broken rotor bars. Finally, a deep neural network is developed to extract significant features to be used as input parameters of the network. Deep autoencoder is then employed to build an advanced model to make predictions of broken rotor bars and bearing faults occurring in induction motors with a high accuracy

Research on the modeling and fault diagnosis of rotor eccentricities has been conducted during the past two decades. A variety of diagnostic theories and methods have been proposed based on different mechanisms, and there are reviews following either one type of electric machines or one type of eccentricity. Nonetheless, the research routes of modeling and diagnosis are common, regardless of machine or eccentricity types. This article tends to review all the possible modeling and diagnostic approaches for all common types of electric machines with eccentricities and provide suggestions on future research roadmap. The paper indicates that a reliable low-cost non-intrusive real-time online visualized diagnostic method is the trend. Observer-based diagnostic strategies are thought promising for the continued research

Electrified vehicular industry is growing at a rapid pace with a global increase in production of electric vehicles (EVs) along with several new automotive cars companies coming to compete with the big car industries. The technology of EV has evolved rapidly in the last decade. But still the looming fear of low driving range, inability to charge rapidly like filling up gasoline for a conventional gas car, and lack of enough EV charging stations are just a few of the concerns. With the onset of self-driving cars, and its popularity in integrating them into electric vehicles leads to increase in safety both for the passengers inside the vehicle as well as the people outside. Since electric vehicles have not been widely used over an extended period of time to evaluate the failure rate of the powertrain of the EV, a general but definite understanding of motor failures can be developed from the usage of motors in industrial application. Since traction motors are more power dense as compared to industrial motors, the possibilities of a small failure aggravating to catastrophic issue is high. Understanding the challenges faced in EV due to stator fault in motor, with major focus on induction motor stator winding fault, this dissertation presents the following: 1. Different Motor Failures, Causes and Diagnostic Methods Used, With More Importance to Artificial Intelligence Based Motor Fault Diagnosis. 2. Understanding of Incipient Stator Winding Fault of IM and Feature Selection for Fault Diagnosis 3. Model Based Temperature Feature Prediction under Incipient Fault Condition 4. Design of Harmonics Analysis Block for Flux Feature Prediction 5. Flux Feature based On-line Harmonic Compensation for Fault-tolerant Control 6. Intelligent Flux Feature Predictive Control for Fault-Tolerant Control 7. Introduction to Machine Learning and its Application for Flux Reference Prediction 8. Monitoring and detecting PM flux linkage is important to maintain a stable permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) operation. The key problems that need to be solved at this stage are to: 1) establish a demagnetization magnetic flux model that takes into account the influence of various nonlinear and complex factors to reveal the demagnetization mechanism; 2) explore the relationship between different factors and demagnetizing magnetic field, to detect the demagnetization in the early stage; and 3) propose post-demagnetization measures. This thesis investigates permanent magnet (PM) demagnetization detection for PMSM machines to achieve high-performance and reliable machine drive for practical industrial and consumer applications. In this thesis, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation as well as experimental investigations are carried out to systematically study the demagnetization detection mechanism and post-demagnetization measures for permanent magnet synchronous motors. At first a flux based acoustic noise model is proposed to analyze online PM demagnetization detection by using a back propagation neural network (BPNN) with acoustic noise data. In this method, the PM demagnetization is detected by means of comparing the measured acoustic signal of PMSM with an acoustic signal library of seven acoustical indicators. Then torque ripple is chosen for online PM demagnetization diagnosis by using continuous wavelet transforms (CWT) and Grey System Theory (GST). This model is able to reveal the relationship between torque variation and PM electromagnetic interferences. After demagnetization being detected, a current regulation strategy is proposed to minimize the torque ripples induced by PM demagnetization. Next, in order to compare the demagnetization detection accuracy, different data mining techniques, Vold-Kalman filtering order tracking (VKF-OT) and dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) based detection approach is applied to real-time PM flux monitoring through torque ripple again. VKF-OT is introduced to track the order of torque ripple of PMSM running in transient state. Lastly, the combination of acoustic noise and torque is investigated for demagnetization detection by using multi-sensor information fusion to improve the system redundancy and accuracy. Bayesian network based multi-sensor information fusion is then proposed to detect the demagnetization ratio from the extracted features. During the analysis of demagnetization detection methods, the proposed PM detection approaches both form torque ripple and acoustic noise are extensively evaluated on a laboratory PM machine drive system under different speeds, load conditions, and temperatures

Safe and reliable operations of industrial machines are highly prioritized in industry. Typical industrial machines are complex systems, including electric motors, gearboxes and loads. A fault in critical industrial machines may lead to catastrophic failures, service interruptions and productivity losses, thus condition monitoring systems are necessary in such machines. The conventional condition monitoring or fault diagnosis systems using signal processing, time and frequency domain analysis of vibration or current signals are widely used in industry, requiring expensive and professional fault analysis team. Further, the traditional diagnosis methods mainly focus on single components in steady-state operations. Under dynamic operating conditions, the measured quantities are non-stationary, thus those methods cannot provide reliable diagnosis results for complex gearbox based powertrains, especially in multiple fault contexts. In this dissertation, four main research topics or problems in condition monitoring of gearboxes and powertrains have been identified, and novel solutions are provided based on data-driven approach. The first research problem focuses on bearing fault diagnosis at early stages and dynamic working conditions. The second problem is to increase the robustness of gearbox mixed fault diagnosis under noise conditions. Mixed fault diagnosis in variable speeds and loads has been considered as third problem. Finally, the limitation of labelled training or historical failure data in industry is identified as the main challenge for implementing data-driven algorithms. To address mentioned problems, this study aims to propose data-driven fault diagnosis schemes based on order tracking, unsupervised and supervised machine learning, and data fusion. All the proposed fault diagnosis schemes are tested with experimental data, and key features of the proposed solutions are highlighted with comparative studies.publishedVersio
